About Sue & Dave Deakin

The villa (Quinta dos Almarjoes) has belonged to my family since it was built in 1968 and it’s the place where I grew up and call ‘home’.

However, since 2006, the villa and gardens have changed almost beyond recognition as it’s been developed by my husband and I as unique holiday destination. Whilst the villa has changed the location remains the same; unspoilt, tranquil and traditionally Portuguese.

Sue & Dave Deakin purchased this villa in 1968

Why Sue & Dave Deakin chose Vila Do Bispo region

The villa is very private, spacious and well equipped. Its perfect location enables guests to have a relaxing and peaceful holiday - and yet it's still close to excellent local bars, restaurants, beaches, golf courses and the attractive town of Lagos.

Beautiful landscaped private gardens surround the terraces which have been restored by a professional garden designer. Paths wind through palm trees and tropical plants to secluded seating areas where one can hide away with a good book. For al fresco dining there is a BBQ near the pool and close to the covered seating area.

The villa has many unique features including, private pool, games room & large areas for playing ball. A shaded terrace offers a cool area for younger children to play or for parents to keep a mindful eye on the pool. Children are very welcome - if the children have a great holiday, then so do the parents!

Through our extensive knowledge of the area and an information pack available on arrival, tourists can gain the most from their stay and from the Algarve in general.

What makes this villa unique

The villa is totally unique, away from all the hassle and bustle, it’s situated amongst eight acres of land set in a traditional Portuguese valley within the Parque Natural do Costa Vicentina. Although peaceful and tranquil it’s also close to the villages of Burgau & Luz and the beautiful town of Lagos.

The villa is furnished with all those essential items to make it a holiday to remember and is a regular destination for many returning visitors. We have received some lovely comments both in our Guest Book and through Tripadvisor.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just a note to thank you for renting us your beautiful villa in Burgau. We all had a great time and the children especially liked all the books and games, and the pool was just what we needed after a hot day out. We are already looking to see if we can manage another week over there next spring, and will contact you if we can find the time to get over to Portugal again.

C. Kelly, Cheshire.

Returned home yesterday afternoon after a tremendous week at Quinta dos Almarjoes and very many thanks for the use of your wonderful Villa – loved the arrangements of cacti, palms and shrubs etc.

Many thanks also for the local information on restaurants etc, which we tried out and could recommend to others without a doubt.

Will certainly be in touch again some time in the future and shall be recommending to others. Many thanks again.

Kind regards, G. Bradford, Wiltshire.

When Dave initially described Quinta dos Almarjoes, I realised it was going to be a privilege to stay in a beautiful villa – but we were still unprepared for the delights of this lovely place. The 4 of us have spent a relaxing week in the sunshine, reading, swimming, visiting beaches, walking (getting lost!) BBQs, taking in coastal views and appreciating the tranquility, comforts & visual pleasures that you’ve created.

Gilmour /Bulmer, Herefordshire

Thank you for letting us stay in your villa - a real find and definitely one to recommend.

We had a splendid holiday & enjoyed the full extent of the villa and grounds. The pool was a welcome relief. Thanks for the well equipped kitchen & outside dinning. My wee sister enjoyed the childrens books & pool equipment.

Conway family, North Berwick

A peaceful and idyllic base for our forays along the west of the Algarve. Beautiful gardens. Today had hours of fun in the pool.

Sturgess family, St Albans, Hertfordshire

Loved Quinta dos Almarjoes. It has everything you need for a relaxing holiday in the West Algarve. Really enjoyed lounging & dining on the terrace and many cooling dips in the pool. The grounds are great.

The Cooper family.

Fantastic villa, near lovely sheltered and quiet beach! The beach at Burgau is the best for miles around as is really quiet and unspoilt with fairly easy parking and a beach bar. The villa is in lovely rural location and the gardens are great for the children to explore. There aren't any steps and a secure gated pool so really relaxing for parents of toddlers. The villa is also really well stocked.

A. Stringfellow, Brighton

Really loved the villa, perfect for young children esp all the toys & books they kept finding. Will definitely recommend it. It’s a home away from home.

G. Flynn, Ireland

Many thanks for your wonderful property, loved the layout of the gardens. The five of us came over for a well deserved break and felt extremely relaxed during our stay here. Extremely sorry to leave. Am certain we will return.

Surrounding Area:

The villa is situated in a protected Nature Reserve and therefore is secluded and unspoilt, with no development permitted in the vicinity. During the spring, walks around the property are outstanding, as this part of the Algarve becomes a botanist's dream. Our knowledge of the region can assist in researching specific interests. My parents wrote numerous books and articles on birdwatching, wildlife, arts & crafts and the cultural traditions of Portugal and Spain.

Beaches:

The choices of beaches is endless - all beautiful, but all different - from the family friendly beaches of Burgau, Luz, Salema and Lagos to the Internationally acclaimed wild beaches of the West Coast which are a surfer's paradise, awe inspiring and invariably almost deserted even in high summer.

Local villages and towns:

Burgau is a small and picturesque fishing village with narrow streets tumbling down to a slipway lined with colourful fishing boats. This bay is flanked by spectacular cliffs and offers a family friendly beach, restaurants and shops. A three minute drive or an easy 30 minute walk from the villa. The Burgau Sports Centre has tennis courts, squash courts, a swimming pool which is heated during winter months and also offers children's activities.

The beautiful and lively village of Luz offers water sports, a wide beach and more restaurants and night life. The attractive and historic town of Lagos with its Marina and walled town and dramatic beaches offers large shops, cafes and great night life. Sagres, the most south westerley point in Europe, is a 20 minute drive west.

Activities:

Sports available locally include horse riding, water sports, tennis, scuba-diving, archery, deep-sea fishing, jeep safaris, gyms, boat trips and spectacular walks both inland and along coastal paths. Water Parks and Zoomarine are approximately a 40 minute drive, with Lagos Zoo only 15 minutes away. During the summer months there are many events occurring throughout the Algarve. One that we can highly recommend is FIESA International Sand Sculpture Festival at Armacao de Pera.

Go-karting:

A new Autodrome has recently opened, around a 25 minute drive away, between the towns of Lagos and Portimao. It is considered to be the most advanced in the world and the top racing teams are using it for testing purposes prior to the Formula 1 season. It is hoped it will become part of the Formula 1 circuit by 2018. At present it holds International Superbike championships and other racing car events. There is also an International Go-Kart circuit which is available for the general public to enjoy. If you are interested in motorsports check out their agenda for the forthcoming season on www.autodromodoalgarve.com

Golf:

The Algarve is renowned for its top golf courses and there are five courses within close proximity:

Parque da Floresta is a 5-10 minute drive away and is a 18 Holes Par 72. It is a spectacular, although hilly course and can be challenging for beginners as it has been carved out of the hilly landscape. Boavista is a 10 minute drive away and is a 18 Holes Par 71. The course is integrated into the natural terrain overlooking Lagos and Monchique mountains. Palmares is a 15 minute drive and is an 18 holes Par 72, combining links-style golf on the first nine holes with a slightly more hilly back nine. It has breathtaking scenery and is renowned for its annual Almond Blossom tournament week in February. Penina is a 20 minute drive away and has an 18 hole Championship course Par 73, a 9 hole resort Par 35 and a 9 hole Academy course Par 30. It was laid out by Sir Henry Cotton.

Simply fabulous villa in wonderful location.

  • 5 of 5

This was our first stay at Quinta dos Almarjoes but certainly won't be our last. We loved the serenity of being away from the main towns and within the national park boundary, yet within easy reach of all the essential amenities like the supermarket, local store and of course some beautiful beaches. The kids loved the pool and the woodland play area with its hidden animal hunt that the owners had set up. There is a barn full of games for the days you want to stay in, plus loads of toys and games indoors for the evenings. In all we had a simply wonderful week here and have already booked to go back for 2 weeks in 2018!

Perfect family holiday

  • 5 of 5

This was our first stay at villa Quinta dos Almarjoes but won't be our last! We were a family of seven adults and we had the most amazing stay. The villa was very well located, a lovely secluded spot, yet not too far away from the local village of Burgau. The villa and cottage was spacious, well-furnished, very clean and equipped with everything you may need for a summer stay and the information book was very helpful, everything you may need to know about the area, places to go etc. The gardens and terraces were beautiful. The little town of Burgau is delightful with its cobbled roads, many restaurants and beautiful beach. We hired a car to get out and about which was simple to do and would recommend. Overall a very good experience and was a real pleasure to stay. Would certainly recommend staying here. We felt at home and can't wait to book again next year.

A spacious secluded villa with beautiful gardens

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of staying in this comfortable villa for two weeks. The villa is set in beautiful landscaped gardens and is not overlooked. My children (aged 11 and 9) enjoyed playing football on the lawn, swimming in the pool (there were lots of inflatables available) and playing table tennis and pool in the barn. As if that wasn't enough, there was also large "Wilderness Area" for the kids to explore, with a treasure hunt to provide even more entertainment. The villa is very spacious, well equipped, and very clean. There was also plenty of board games, jigsaw puzzles, books and DVD'S to keep the kids content. The location of the villa was excellent, as it was private yet had great access to some stunning beaches and restaurants in Bergau. One of our favourite restaurants was Ancora, which served great meat and fish dishes, and the huge starter of Thai prawn salad was to die for! The staff in the child-friendly restaurant made us feel very welcomed and we look forward to visiting again.

The villa was easy to find, just being off the motorway yet quiet and free of traffic noise. The owners sorted out the car hire, and provided with accurate directions.

Secluded, well-equipped, and spacious, Quinta Dos Almarjoes is a beautiful place to stay. From a private pool to fabulous location, every aspect of it was brilliant. The villa exceeded our expectations and we will definitely return!

Lovely villa and amazing gardens!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed for a long weekend with friends. This was my second visit. We had a fantastic time and I would love to go again. The villa is well equipped and spacious, set in beautiful gardens with pool. The whole setting makes for a very relaxing environment. All amenities, shops, restaurants, beaches, etc., are within easy reach by car, as is the airport. The surrounding countryside is set in the Parque Natural and is stunning. Thank you for sharing your family home…

Beautiful, well kept villa

  • 5 of 5

Spent a lovely week at this spacious, beautifully kept villa. Set in delightful, well kept gardens the villa felt very private and secluded yet it was only 10 minutes away from a lovely little village and glorious beaches. The villa was well stocked with everything we needed and although we were a big group it never felt crowded or as if we were short of anything. Would definitely like to return for another lovely, relaxing break.
