About The Owner

We are David and Maggie - we had both led very busy working lives in the UK and wanted to retire to a quiet, beautiful place. We chose the Ariege for its peace, tranquillity and beautiful unspoilt countryside. The Ariegeois are very friendly and helpful to newcomers and we have settled here very happily. I have joined the local Foyer Rural and run their weekly English conversation classes, great fun, where I've met new friends. David is a keen skier and golfer, he has found a wide choice of good ski areas within easy reach of home and some challenging golf courses. We both enjoy walking and cycling-this is one of the best regions in France to pursue both activities.

We live in the farmhouse next door to the gite and are always available for help and advice e.g. calling the local restaurant!

The Owner purchased this barn in 2007

Why The Owner chose Ariege

The house and gite are situated in a very pretty valley, well protected from winds by the mountains on each side. It is an ideal base for exploring the Pyrenees, by car, by bike or on foot. You can cross into Spain for a day visit, go up to Andorra for sightseeing/shopping or just explore the local trails in the forest with fantastic views of the mountains.

Toulouse -the fabled 'red' city-is easily reached by car or by train from Cazeres and is well worth a visit. The airport at Blagnac is 50 minutes from the gite.

We live in the centre of the Ariege regional park, at least 20 kms from the nearest major road - it's very tranquil -just the occasional tractor passing by!

What makes this barn unique

The gite has two sunny terraces with a beautiful sweeping view across the valley - perfect for wildlife spotting (bring your binoculars!) We have had deer in the garden including two newly born fawns and a huge variety of birds.

The restaurant in the village is an easy five minute walk away and is renowned locally for its traditional Ariege fare. The village itself has a 12th century donjon and church and the remains of the 15th century palace of Bishop Bruno of St. Lizier. There are plans afoot to have an open air theatre within the grounds of the palace.

We have had so much fun meeting our wonderful guests over the last five years and are looking forward to meeting many more.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As experienced 'giters' this has to be one of the best. Comfortable & well equiped, lovely pool & hosts who couldn't be more welcoming & helpful.- John & Alex - Norwich.

We agree! It is the best gite we have ever stayed in, so light, spacious, comfortable and in the loveliest of settings.

Chris & Rob - Gloucestershire.

This is certainly the best gite we've stayed in; a beautiful location and it is wonderfully cool inside, even though it has been incredibly hot thisweek. Val & Paul - Romsey.

Notes on accommodation: All rooms have wall mounted electric heaters and heated towel rails in the bathroom and shower room. The main living room also has a log burning stove. Fans are provided for hot weather although they are not usually needed as the walls of this more than 200 year old barn are mostly built of local stone which keeps the gite cool in summer and warm in the winter. A cot and highchair are available on request. Smoking is not allowed inside the gite. Outside: The gite has its own large private, not-overlooked, terraces (1st floor and ground floor) with outdoor dining furniture and barbeque plus sunbeds. There is an outside staircase leading down from the 1st floor terrace to the ground floor terrace. The ground floor terrace leads to large lawned gardens containing mature trees and a 11m x 5m swimming pool with roman steps into the shallow end - ideal for children. The pool has a salt water chlorination system and a slide over hard cover which allows swimming underneath on cooler days. The cover keeps the water warm throughout the season (22-30'C May to mid Sept) The pool is shared with the friendly English speaking owners who live next door and who are happy to give advice, if needed, about days out etc. There is parking provided for 2 cars. Utility Room: Washing machine in utility area. Tumble dryer available in adjoining barn. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Cotton bed linen and towels are included. The gite is cleaned on changeover day. For guests staying for more than a week fresh towels and linen are changed weekly. Pool towels also included. Other: Storage room (off 1st floor terrace next to kitchen area) contains space for storing patio furniture and guests belongings eg. ski equipment.

Our week in Toutouse was perfect. The gite has a delightful layout and magnificent views over rolling countryside. A very peaceful location where you could easily spend lazy days on the terraces or in the pool. There were walks and cycle rides from the door. Further afield the Pyrenees offered amazing panoramas and more challenging walks and cycles.

The owners couldn't have been more welcoming and informative about the area.

If you want peace and quite, a slice of rural France away from the traditional tourist hotspots and are happy to make your own entertainment then this is for you.

The title is a Gaelic word meaning peacefulness, calm, tranquillity which perfectly sums up all that this wonderful gite, situated in the foothills of the Pyrenees, just outside the tiny village of Tourtouse, has to offer.

The accommodation is very well appointed with all the comforts of home set out over two floors - sleeping quarters downstairs and kitchen/dining/living area upstairs, both opening onto terraces affording a wonderful vista of the adjacent rolling hills and fields. Everything needed is provided by the owners, Maggie and David, who live next door. Although on two floors, the property is perfectly manageable for those with mild mobility issues (of which I am one!).

The area is spectacularly beautiful and views on the road to St-Girons and from the nearby village of Fabas are breath-taking. For the very active there are wonderful walks (I am told) and for the serious R&R practitioners the gite with its very well kept garden and pool is an ideal place to just sit back and relax. The pool is very well maintained, warm enough to dive straight in and is covered overnight to keep in the heat and, if the weather is slightly inclement, can be kept in place to provide protection from the elements.

The one commercial enterprise in Tourtouse is an excellent Bar-Restaurant which, at the time of writing, provides an excellent prix-formule set 4-course lunch, including wine, for 13?. It is no more than half a mile from the gite and is everything you would want in a French village restaurant. Excellent eateries are also to be found in St-Girons (Auberge d'Antan being one), again at very reasonable prices.

Although we did not do much other than relax at the gite, there are many very interesting places within an hour's drive of the area on wonderful country roads, with not a hint of motorway and the pace of life is as far removed from helter-skelter as one would wish.

This is a gite that suits people of all ages, from the retired couple to a young family and one which I will return to at the earliest opportunity.

Thank you, Maggie and David, for your hospitality and for a most enjoyable fortnight - roll on 2014!

The Mediterranean coast (Narbonne) is approximately 2 hours drive and makes a lovely day out for a change of scenary from the woodlands and mountainous scenery of the Ariege.

Blagnac Airport in Toulouse is the nearest international airport (approx. 1 hours drive). Carcasonne Airport is just under 2 hours drive. The area is rural and a car is essential for getting around.

The nearest village shop is at Fabas (3kms). The larger village of St Croix Volvestre (7km) has a range of small traditional shops, bank, restaurant/bar and a tourist information office. St Croix Volvestre also has a swimming/fishing lake with beach, boules and tennis courts. St Girons (16km) and Cazeres (17km) are the nearest large towns with supermarkets, shops, traditional markets, banks etc. Foix is the capital town of the region and is an hour's drive away.

Further Details:

There is a table tennis table and badminton and tennis equipment available. Although the area is renowned for its peace and tranquility the local villages and towns host many festivals and events throughout the year including fetes, open air historical re-enactments (Cathar and Roman history) and amazing firework displays. The Tour de France passes close by and is an enjoyable occasion for enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike. The prehistoric caves of Mas d'Azil & Niaux are 30 minutes to an hour's drive away.

The Western Ariege is one of the most under-developed and unspoilt areas of France and remains covered in large tracts of woodland and wilderness areas. This leads to the common sighting of wildlife of all types including deer, wild boar and large numbers of birds of prey.
