About Mrs Diane Noel
We first came to Italy in 1988 and restored a remote, ruined, farmhouse on Monte Civitella in Umbria. We moved in 2006 when we found what was then an old barn just across the border in Tuscany with astounding views of Monterchi, in the “paese di Piero della Francesca”. This is our second restoration project and we think we’ve got it right! The upper floor of the barn had open brickwork to allow the maize to dry, the lower floor housed ancient carts and farm equipment. We have recreated the open brickwork on the first floor while the ground floor is open plan, to preserve the spaciousness of the old barn. Using local materials, chestnut beams, stone and terracotta, combined with modern insulation and underfloor heating, we now have a comfortable and cosy home.
Pool / Spa
One of the most stunning views I've ever seen from the garden. Stunning scenery, great pool area and beautiful outdoor dining table. Kitchen is very well-laid out and bedrooms spacious and clean.
We are looking forward to going back!
Fantastic Tuscan retreat
I was lucky enough to stay here for a fortnight and enjoyed a very relaxing holiday. The views and infinity pool are stunning, and ideal for Sundowners or a BBQ (provided). The house is sympathetically refurbished and well equipped for the stay, and everything was left beautifully clean, with basics provided. The nearby town has everything you need (restaurants, wine bar, supermarket, shops, museums etc). Easy drive from Pisa or Florence airports.
Would recommend to anyone, thank you for having us - 10/10.
Fantastic accommodation with stunning views
The property was fantastic, well equipped and clean. The property had everything you could think of (with the exception of a TV and DVD player perhaps - although this did not spoil anything for us other guests may like these). The grounds to the house are lovely with a great sized infinity pool. The views from the property are beautiful and you could never get bored looking soaking in the landscape. The property was in easy reach of a small supermarket (5 minutes by car) and a larger supermarket (about 20 minutes by car in Sansepolcro). Whilst we were there we visited Arezzo and Citta di Castello, which were well worth a visit and fairly close by with plenty to see and do with nice restaurants. We also visited Florence during our stay. There were 6 of us staying and the holiday was throughly enjoyed by all three generations, from the kids to the grandparents (the accommodation takes more - we just had a bedroom we did not use). I can safely say that this is the best accommodation that we have stayed in and ticked all the boxes for an enjoyable and relaxing family holiday. We would definitely go back to stay here again and are already considering a return next year. One last point to note is that the owner and agent at location were extremely responsive and helpful to resolve any issues we had. The Elgar Family (August 2015).
chestnuts and truffles
The countryside is swathed in russet leaves and the shops are full of truffles. The villages all have food festivals as well as the weekly market. Monterchi market was on Sunday morning, just in time to stock up for Sunday lunch.
The house has the most stunning views across the Tuscan hills, past the hill top town of Monterchi to the dramatic town of Anghiari. We were able to eat under the pergola every day, even on the one rainy day!
The bedrooms are comfortable for 6 adults and the open plan kitchen and dining room makes entertaining easy. We found all the utensils that we needed and loved the huge range cooker. In the evenings the living room is a cosy place for card games and there was plenty of wood for the log fire, if we had needed it.
We chose to alternate between sightseeing and local walks. We explored Perugia, Florence, Arezzo and Assisi, all within easy range. We walked some of the nearby Camino di San Francesco, a well marked route, and found some delightful local restaurants en route. The house guide lists details of local shops and restaurants and there are maps and guides to all the major tourist attractions on the bookshelves.
We found it to be the perfect blend between a central location for reaching the cultural centres and a quiet spot in the countryside to unwind. The house guide lists places to ride, play tennis, golf and fish. But we did not have time to do any of those. Perhaps next time!
