About Kristell & Mike
Mike and myself (Kristell) bought our House in Vendee in 2006. We were looking for a holiday home close to my family in a french rural setting yet close to the beach and touristic activities. We found our cottage in the village of St Valerien which is typically french and has very friendly inhabitants. We fell in love with the village and decided to get married there in 2007. We have since been able to enjoy family holidays in our cottage with the arrival of our three children with trips to the Mervent zoo, to the beach, to the Aquarium of La Rochelle, to the local parks etc... all what House in Vendee is for which is relax and enjoy! that's what we would like you to experience too!
Kristell & Mike purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Kristell & Mike chose Saint-Valérien
The Vendee is full of places to see and things to do. It is the sunniest place in france after the Riviera yet so easily accessible by road or by plane. So for these reasons it is the perfect holiday destination. We wanted to be in a true french setting outside the touristy hotspots yet close to the beach to go daily if we wish and close to all the activities that the Vendee has to offer. St Valerie answers our brief perfectly.
What makes this Cottage unique
The location: a weather which is similar to the South of France while being a few hours drive from the ferries. The village is full of authentic french charm and has a great community. The village is not touristic yet close to many touristic attractions. The property is charming and the large garden ideal for children or just a sensation of space.

Good sized Gite and latge sunny garden
The gite is in a lovely peaceful location with a good size sunny garden which is great for games .Kitchen / dining area is lovely and spacious with newly installed units .Bathroom also new with good shower..The only disappointing thing were the bedrooms which were damp smelling and suffered a bit with early morning traffic noise.
Very good communicaton with owners,,both before we went and whilst we were away, when a couple of issues were resolved very quickly.
Lovely beaches an hour's drive away and also Puy du fou theme park which was fantastic and also about an hour away
Spacious, quiet holiday home ideal for a couples or family holiday.
Clean and tidy, with a large kitchen and big garden. Everything we needed for a relaxing stay. Good bathroom with shower, separate toilet, and off road parking. Shop close by, supermarkets and restaurants within easy driving distance.
The vendee experience.
We spent 2wks in Blue Shutters and had fabulous weather . Visited glorious beaches nearby which were deserted in late season ,beautiful medieval towns and time to relax with quiet roads, what joy ! The gite was easily found and was clean and tidy and perfectly adequate . We enjoyed our stay ,thankyou Kristell and Mike .
Lovely gite in great location
We had a wonderful stay in St Valerien. An ideal spot for those wishing to sample french life. It was great to meet with expats at the local bar / shop living the dream and get an insight into how good it is to live in a small but weloming community. I must also thank Bruno the bar owner for explaining the complexities of french bread and for making us feel so much at home at the "local". We would definitely return to the area as there is lots to see and do. Thanks also to Mike and Kristel for the useful information and allowing us to share their lovely home. Our border collie Skye just loved the huge garden and was happy to chase her favorite throw ball for hours on end whilst we could sip a glass of wine and watch the sun go down from the terrace.
Basic accommodation but everything we needed
We had a great week staying here and exploring the local area.
The gite itself was ok & with a little tlc on the loo/ bathroom could be amazing.
Cycle routes in the vacinity were very good and well signposted
We visited the aquarium at La Rochelle (very good) & the zoo at La L'Almyre ( a bit of a trek but very good)
Thanks for everything!
Lovely setting in rural location
We loved the house (the lawn was a big hit with the kids), and the village was really sweet - small but perfectly formed, surrounded by sunflower fields. The shop owner, Bruno, was so friendly and gave us great tips for the local area.
We enjoyed cycling to neighbouring villages, canoeing on the Mervent Forest lake, daytrips to La Rochelle and Ile de Re and we spent many hours at the family friendly lake with beach at Chassenon le Bourg (only 15 min drive away).
With so much to see & do, we wished we'd booked another week!
