|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
Edgecoombe holiday cottage faces south, surrounded by lush Dorset farmland and splendid rolling hills. A few minutes away are a country pub, horse riding, a heated indoor swimming pool, tennis, golf and the historic Saxon hilltop town of Shaftesbury with its famous Gold Hill, abbey ruins, shopping and cafes. Nearby are Longleat Safari Park, Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral, fine pubs and restaurants, the Jurassic coast, numerous other places of interest and good walks.
Good location, however trying to exit onto the road is a big issue, the car has a large bonnet and found that I was having to reverse back into the drive as I would have caused an accident as it's a 50mph limit but it looked like no one stuck to it!
The cottage was comfortable, but some thought should be given to the kitchen, you cannot fry an egg in the frying pan unless you like a new variation on scrambled eggs, the use of space is insufficient in my opinion as I ran out of work surface and storage area, that will probably stop me wanting to cook..
My biggest concern was how to get my mother to and from the cottage from where you can park your car. She is very bad on her legs and anything over moving from one room to another she requires a wheelchair. It is impossible to push a wheelchair along the path as it is large shingle, it's not much better trying to pull it, so it took approximately 8 minutes to get between the two. It would be nice if the path way could be made wider so that you could drive the vehicle further towards the cottage or make the surface more suitable for wheelchair users.
Special interest holidays:
The cottage borders onto a working farm, with horses and ponies grazing in the adjoining fields.
The Dorset coast with its beaches and the 'Jurassic coast' around Lyme Regis are 40-50 miles away.
A car is essential. Nearest railway stations are Gillingham, Dorset and Tisbury, Wiltshire, both about 15 mins drive away and about 2 hours from London Waterloo. Poole Docks approx 30 miles. Southampton Docks approx 40 miles. Bournemouth airport approx 30 miles. Southampton airport approx 40 miles.
Shaftesbury 1 mile. Longleat approx. 16 miles. Salisbury Cathedral approx. 20 miles. Stonehenge approx. 30 miles. Avebury Stone Circle approx. 60 miles.
There is good food shopping nearby with a Cooperative and a Tesco in Shaftesbury (4 mins drive) and a Waitrose and a Lidl in Gillingham (15 mins drive). Shaftesbury has branches of Barclays, Lloyds and NatWest and the High Street has a private off-licence with a good selection of wines. There are a variety of good pubs and restaurants in the surrounding area ranging from good pub food to quality gourmet eating.
