Sant Orsola is a former benedictine monastery which has been restored to a very high standard. The house sleeps ten comfortably in five large ensuite bedrooms. There is a large living area with plenty of seating and a good sized dining area. The kitchen is well equipped for self catering. The terrace has a table which seats ten and overlooks a number of beautiful Umbrian villages. The 12x6 metre pool enjoys full sun all day. The gardens are extensive and well maintained. A one bedroom apartment is also available for a group larger than ten people.
For quiet reflection visit our private frescoed chapel. The English owners are always on hand for booking restaurants or giving advice on exploring Umbria.
My name is Jane Davies and I have lived in Italy for fifteen years, the first of which was spent restoring the house and doing extensive garden works. Since then Sant'Orsola has been very successfully rented to guests from all over the world. Before embarking on the Italian project I was a newspaper and radio journalist. Dick is an architect and passionate about Italian architecture. He has an extensive knowledge of things to see in Umbria and Tuscany and the best places to visit during your stay. Customer service is important to me and I am always available to deal with any problems should they arise and to help with choices of the best local restaurants to visit.
J.Davies purchased this villa in 2001
I fell in love with Umbria immediately with it's many beautiful hilltop towns and extremely friendly Umbrians. I was looking for a property with loads of character and history and Sant'Orsola fitted the bill perfectly. Restoration took just over six months and included completely re-roofing the house, putting in new bathrooms, kitchen and a complete re-wiring of the property. The gardens had to be landscaped and we installed the swimming pool. I chose the area but it is so accessible, close to restaurants and shops etc, and not remote. The medieval centres of Perugia, Orvieto and Assisi are all an easy drive from the house. For travelling further afield it's possible to catch the express trains to Rome and Florence. The house is 1hr 40 mins from Rome airports, 20 mins from Perugia airport.
Privacy with beautiful views yet conveniently placed for exploring all of Umbria. It's a very interesting building with original beams and stunning terracotta floors. Four years ago we discovered a very large fresco when we were restoring the chapel. An art historian has dated it as circa 1480 and believes it was painted by Timoteo Viti who was one of Raphael's early teachers! The chapel is beautiful quiet place to sit and we have had wedding blessings there, although it is no longer consecrated.
Ten of us stayed at the villa or a week Everything about it was wonderful. The grounds are well kept and lush, the pool is sparkling, and the villa itself is well furnished with antiques and beautiful paintings. Each bedroom has comfortable beds and it's own bathroom
Our group of 10 friends booked Sant Orsola based on recommendations from friends and we weren't disappointed! Beautiful accommodations, gracious and helpful owners, fantastic views made for a glorious stay in Italy. We appreciated being so close to a major highway which made it easy to do day trips to towns such as Marchiano, Assisi, Spiletto and Todi. It was an easy drive from the Rome airport. We will recommend this beautiful villa to our family and friends and plan to return again.
Three generations of our family stayed in the villa, and it was perfect. A beautiful pool which was perfect after a day's sightseeing, and very safe for the small children in our party. Plenty of sunloungers to lie in the sun or shade (the garden has both these areas, which is not always the case, and was much appreciated!). The more active amongst us enjoyed the games available, too. The villa is typically Italian, well supplied with all we needed to have a comfortable stay and ceiling fans made sleeping at night comfortable. The owners were very helpful, even texting to make sure we were aware of a public holiday which might have affected our plans for that day. They provided a very useful list of directions to places of interest, restaurants, shops and services. The villa is perfectly situated for exporing the region, and is in easy reach of some of the lovliest towns we have visited in Italy - Todi, Orvieto, Spolletto, Montefalco, Bevagna, Assisi, Perugia to name but a few. We also walked most mornings to a nearby bar for coffee! Because Ryanair do not fly to Perugia at the weekend, we had to fly to Rome - a word of warning - the car hire area of the airport is a DISASTER, and it took us 2 hours to pick up our car. The journey from Rome to the villa is relatively straightforward following Richard and Jane's directions. However, some or our party chose to use Perugia airport, and although their stay was a couple of days shorter, their experience was an absolute dream. It's a small airport, so no queues and everything so much easier, including the journey to the villa which is about 30mins. We had a wonderful holiday, and would have no hesitation in recommending the villa!
It's a two hour drive to the coast. There are two lovely lakes, Lago Trasemeno and Lago Bolsena within a 40 minute drive. At Lago Trasemeno it is possible to hire boats or take the ferry to the islands for lunch.
Sant Orsola is approx 1 hour 45 mins from the Rome airports. The drive from both airports is on a fast autostrada (motorway). The airport at Perugia is 20 mins away and Ryanair fly there from Stansted. The airport is being extended and is expected to take more international and budget airlines by the end of 2011.
The village of Schiavo (with 3 bars, shops etc) is a 5 minute walk. The town of Marsciano is a 5 minute drove. The historic centres of Perugia, Todi, Assisi are within a 30 min drive.
There are 3 supermarkets in the towm of Marsciano and a small supermarket in the village. There are good clothes shops to be found in Marsciano, Perugia and Todi. We have a very good Cantina close by selling locally produced wine and olive oil. Apart from the main historic towns we are surrounded by many beautiful hilltop village and hamlets, Also close by is the famous pottery centre of Deruta. There are three good restaurants within a 5 min drive.
