House in El Colmenar, Nr. Gaucin - Peaceful Location in the Parque Natural Alcornocales

El Deseo is a charming townhouse providing privacy, comfort and quality, with its own pool and courtyard, in the old part of the quiet Andalucian village of El Colmenar, also known as Estacion de Gaucin. The village is in the midst of the mountainous Parque Natural Alcornocales with the river just a 5min. walk away. Within easy reach of the coast and the major sites of Andalucia: El Deseo is approx an hour's drive north of Gibraltar. The house would suit a couple or up to 4 people, with its two spacious, double/twin bedrooms and has a secluded south facing walled courtyard with a mosaic tiled swimming pool and lovely countryside views. Local food shops and some excellent restaurants and bars are within walking distance. The house is accessible via road and by train. Decorated and furnished to a high standard, El Deseo provides the opportunity for a tranquil holiday experience as well as scope for walking, cycling, horse riding, canyoning, bird watching and golfing.

About Richard

We live in west London and both of us work in the mental Health field. Having a space in the South of Spain gives us a lovely retreat from the busy-ness of 21st century life: a simpler way of living and being that enriches our lives and steeps us in the very different feel and flavours of the Andalucian culture.

We have had the house for almost 10 years now, and are fortunate to be able to spend more and more time there ourselves. We enjoy having guests to visit our home, knowing that they can also share in the beauty and simplicity of the space.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: The wood burning fireplace in the lounge area and the heating by wall mounted radiators throughout the house, makes the house very comfortable in winter. Electric blankets are also available in the winter months. A stair gate available for young children. We also have a small selection of board games. A good selection of CDs and around 80 recent and classic DVDs available for our guests. Outside: Blue mosaic tiled pool with saline filter system (less chlorine). Depth is 140cm. Overall around 18 sq.m. Cleaned and maintained professionally throughout the year. The courtyard is not overlooked. There is inbuilt wall lighting and the working well which has been re-built into a large table. A beautiful orange tree provides natural shade (and fruit). Chairs (6), sunshades (3) and sun loungers (4) are provided. The courtyard is ideal for alfresco dining and relaxing. There is also a Weber easy-clean barbecue to enhance the outdoor dining experience. Utility Room: Washing machine in purpose-built cupboard next to the courtyard. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Egyptian cotton towels and bed linen are included in the price. The house is cleaned prior to your visit, on Friday/Saturday - the changeover day. Fresh bedding is available for each week of your stay. Our housekeeper lives oppposite the property. Other: Dining area with wooden table, chairs and bench to seat up to 6. A travel cot with sheets and purpose built mosquito net is also available for use in bedroom 1. There are electric radiators throughout.

Fantastic!

The hosts were very caring. The house was a home with a lot of thought & consideration put in to it. It was so so relaxing we rarely ventured out. We loved the views & the privacy of the sweet little courtyard garden & pool, amazing in the heat. We totally relaxed. The village was very quiet but a couple of good bars; the tapas were good at meson de Flores, staff were friendly & it was fun to meet some of the local characters. We would highly recommend this home to stay in for peace and tranquility.

Great Escape

Loved being in the village, so close to the bars and shop but not overlooked in the little courtyard. Fantastic walks on the doorstep, birds a plenty. Hope to return.

Fantastic

This was a fantastic property just 30mtrs from the local Bars and Restaurants which were not crowded or noisy.

The property was very well equipped and extremely clean. There is ample hot water when needed and a great shower. The pool is a welcome feature after a long day out and the patio or if you prefer the balcony provide great outdoor spaces.

The locals are very friendly and helpful and the local mini market has sufficient to provide for your needs.

All in all a fantastic place to get away from it all and experience real Spain.

Coast/Beach:

The Mediterranean coast of the Costa del Sol is approx 45 mins away. The long white beaches of the Atlantic coast (Eg at Tarifa) and associated water and wind sports are 1hr 15mins drive away.

Travel:

Via any of the following airports Gibraltar 1 hour scenic and gentle route up from the coast. Malaga 1.5 hour along the coastal motorway and then winding up through the mountains. Sevilla 2 hr from the plains up into the mountains via Ronda. Jerez de la Frontera 2 hr- another pretty run, from low lying Jerez up into the Parque Natural. Car hire recommended, although as there is a station in the village, airports could be reached by train.

Distances:

The mountain village of Gaucin, 20 mins by car, or a good hike away, has lovely views out to Gibraltar and Africa, and has a good selection of restaurants, a petrol station and shops, including a health food shop (with organic fresh meat and veg) and an internet cafe. The nearest larger town is Ronda (with its famous gorge) which can be reached easily by train from El Colmenar (around 50 mins), the train gradually climbing the picturesque Guadiaro valley to the hilltop town, Ronda.

Further Details:

The village has good food stores, bakeries, a pharmacy and a good selection of restaurants (5 in total), using local produce. There is also a new spa treatment centre/eco restaurant in the village. A cordon bleu restaurant (El Hacho) with great views of the village, is 5 mins by car away. Nearby Gaucin has a daily market and larger supermarkets are available on the coast or in Ronda. The area is great for outdoor enthusiasts such as walkers and cyclists, as well as providing opportunities for bird watching and rock climbing. For a slower pace in high summer, the Parque Natural has many beautiful picnic spots, with stunning views to the other white villages/pueblos blancos. Two further natural parks in the Serrania de Ronda are nearby: Grazalema and Las Nieves offering a more rugged terrain for the more adventurous walker. Information, maps and walking routes are available at El Deseo. We can also put you in touch with english speaking walking and cycling guides in the area.
