Why CATHERINE CARPENTER chose Trinity

The Travel Reviewer, 'Escape Here', in naming the 10 Most Breathtaking Views to Visit in Canada, described 'The small village of Trinity [as] 'postcard perfect'! Exquisitely picturesque: 360 degree views from the top of Gun Hill high above Trinity, one can see not only Trinity but far away outports, the Harbour all 'round, rolling hills, ponds & lakes extending inland forever, and ocean as far as the eye can see! Commander's Keep, on its clifftop perch is afforded these panoramic views, of Town and Sea alike, from the huge private wraparound deck. This experience is unforgettable!

What makes this cottage unique

Though this home has only been on The Nuddick (defined as a 'bare hill') since 2010, the local residents tell us that we 'changed the skyline of Trinity'...only after having this salt box house design accepted and approved by the Trinity Historical Society. Everyone agrees that it looks as though it has been standing on this property for over 100 years; it fits with the existing historical buildings so well.

It affords the guests an incredible view of the Harbour and ocean beyond, and a unique view of the town from its vantage point of being one of the highest points along the Harbour!

From every window of the house, one has a picture perfect view of true Newfoundland scenery!

Trinity is located off of a road that joins on Regional Road 239, which is off Hwy #230, which joins off Trans Canada Hwy. 1 from St John's.

Commander's Keep Vacation Home is located on an isthmus of land that forms the most easterly aspect of the town of Trinity, Trinity Bay. Its lofty seat is on the area of land called 'the Nuddick'. This location gives a 270 degree view of the Harbour, with the Lighthouse, the Skerwink Cliffs, and the ocean beyond! Behind the house lies the town, with Gun Hill as the 'backdrop'. White churches, and multicoloured traditional Newfoundland style houses, shops, and the Theatre create a picturesque panorama of another variety for our guests to enjoy, just looking out every window of the house.

Other Activities: Hiking, biking, wild bird and game watching, kayaking, theatre, icebergs viewing

Golf: A 50 minute drive away, there is a world class Championship golf course outside of Terra Nova National Park.

A smaller, also challenging, golf course is located closer by at The View Golf Course, 30 minutes away.

Phenomenal

  • 5 of 5

The pictures of this house do not do it justice. It was purely spectacular, clean, comfortable and in great working order. The views off the deck are not to be replicated anywhere in Trinity. We felt so lucky to have stayed here.

Absolutely fantastic accomodation, perfect for three couples.

  • 5 of 5

Spectacular views from every window and deck in a bustling community with lots to see and do. Hiked all the marvellous, scenic local trails (Skerwink, Fox, Horsechops, Gun Hill, Taverner's Point, and Kersley Cove) and came home to gourmet meals in well-equipped kitchen. Feasted on hand-picked berries which were still in season in late September. Easy day trips to Bonavista, the 5 coves of Route 235, and Random Passage site in New Bonaventure. Took in a play at Rising Tide Theatre and were generally inspired by the hard-working, but always happy local folk we met. It is worth a day just to amble about Trinity itself with its quaint museums, awesome restaurants (the Café for lunch and the dockside place for fish and chips). Also worth a drive around to Fort Point and the lighthouse which you can see from the deck. Overall, all six of us were delighted with our one week stay!

Newfoundland Experience

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent five wonderful days at “the Keep” in Trinity. The setting is unbelievable, out on the end of a cliff with water views in three directions and a working lighthouse directly across Trinity Bay. Trinity is a charming and historic town well located to day trip the Bonavista Peninsula in search of icebergs or visit the beautiful Terra Nova National Park. In Trinity, don’t miss the historical pageant/tour and the dinner theater at the Rising Tide. We found Commander’s Keep to be immaculately clean and well equipped and provisioned, with an abundance of dishes, glassware, pots, pans, utensils, spices, condiments, and an abundance of sheets, towels, paper products and cleaners. All appliances were in good working order, and the instructions for the TV and high speed internet were clear. Catherine could not have been easier to work with, responding to all of our inquiries promptly and courteously. We would gladly return to this one of a kind rental property.

Dream home for a dream vacation.

  • 5 of 5

The Bonavista Peninsula kept us busy for seven days with daily hikes, boat excursions and great restaurants. For people from the 40th parallel, the exotic and wild experiences of the 48th parallel --from icebergs to moose-- were nonstop. Just when we thought nothing could top a hike, around the point we would find new and completely different wildlife or geology or social history experiences. Having Commander's Keep to go back to each night provided us with an awesome place to kick back and decompress after one busy day after the other. The house is gorgeous, propped on a bluff over Trinity Bay, with all facets of domestic life--kitchen, living room, bedrooms--well-equiped. Catherine Carpenter is a great hostess/owner who, although we never met her in person, treated us warmly in all of our correspondence. Catherine's property managers, Alma and Alf Bellows, were there for us at a moment's notice with anything that we needed, and are wonderfully cheerful, decent, and interesting people. We will never forget Newfoundland!

Owner's Response: Thank you for acknowleding the effort taken, and the loving care given to this vacation home so that you ll feel warmly welcomed into your home away from home!! Alma and Alf are the best people ... you most accurately assessed their high standards as reflected throughout the house. Also very accurately described the special, caring, and responsive people that they are! They were delighted to have you as guests, and both they, together with my husband, David, and I would welcome you back in a heartbeat!! We are thrilled you had such an enjoyable time and that you were able to do so many of the activities we had recommended to you!
