About Jim and Sue Clewell
We are originally from Pennsylvania, spent 10 years in Georgia and in our search for a more rural way of life, fell in love and settled in West Virginia in 2009. Jim is a semi/retired commercial artist who still does beautiful fine art . Sue is a retired RN and now manages Touchwood Properties, LLC . We live full-time in Monroe County, WV on our organically managed farm and get up to Hardy County to enjoy Applewood Cabin whenever we get a chance.
Jim and Sue Clewell purchased this Cabin in 2015
Why Jim and Sue Clewell chose Mathias
We bought this cabin in 2015 to have a family gathering place that was closer to our children and their families, who live in Alexandria, VA(2.25 hours) and West Chester, PA 4.25 hours). We are able to see our family much more often now as the cabin helps us" meet in the middle." The fact that the Lost River area is so absolutely beautiful and has so much to offer was the deciding factor on buying our cabin here.
What makes this Cabin unique
Situated on a private 8 acres with creeks on two sides, we have worked hard to bring this cabin up to top quality condition with new floors downstairs, new furniture, appliances, new paint/decorating throughout and fiberoptic internet technology. The hot tub is perfect for relaxing at the end of your day. The totally renovated guest house adds a whole extra living space to your rental experience. We love this cabin, the location being a short hike/bike/or ride to miles and miles of trails in the George Washington National Forest. The road is quiet as it leads straight into the National Forest. Relaxing in the rocking chairs on the upstairs deck, feeling the mountain breezes, listening to the sounds of the running creeks and absorbing the serenity this cabin provides is a heavenly experience.

Beautiful Cabin in a Beautiful Location
The property was well maintained. The location was beautiful and extremely quite. The hot tub was great. Loved sitting out on the porches.
Best spot in the middle of the woods
The cabin is great, very neat, clean, and quite. My newly husband and i enjoyed this cabin for our honeymoon. It is the perfect place to enjoy each other's company and get away from our city life.
Sue and Jim were wonderful. They left us a card, bottle of wine and flowers.
We definitely would recommend staying here for a nice get away.
Week of Rest
The cabin was spacious and beautiful. The screened-in porches were large and very well furnished with views of hills and trees from 3 sides---what a great way to start our mornings! It was a treat to see the sun come up over the ridge, and to watch the trees breathe and sway in the light breezes. The property is very well maintained and clean, inside and out. The kitchen was well-stocked with seasonings, pans, napkins, paper towels, filters---everything we needed. The same goes for the bathrooms--much attention to detail!
There was a large book with maps, trail guides, and information about the area which we used every day. I would definitely return for another week of beauty, quiet, and rest.
Overall, we enjoyed the stay. However we didn't realize that most things were about an hour drive to get to. There were some inconsistences with the app information and the contract/booklet provided. At that point we had already fully paid, however the owner was not thrilled about our pet. The home itself was very nice and we loved the screen in deck. If you're looking to get away from everything, I'd recommend it, but ask just questions about the pet policy because some specifications are not listed until you've already paid in full.
Our policy, which is stated clearly when guests initially book, is that we ask that the rental agreement be reviewed and signed and returned to us within 14 working days. Everything is spelled out clearly to avoid any misunderstandings. You received the agreement with hours of your initial booking. If you had read it when you received it, you would have seen that our policy is not to accept dogs under the age of 1 year, for numerous reasons. Unfortunately, because you did not read or return the rental agreement/ pet addendum within the time requested, as you said , “ it slipped your mind”, we found ourselves having to make a special exception and allow your 9-month old dog to come. I had to call you to inquire as to when I would be receiving the overdue required documents and that is when you told me your German Shepherd was a pup.
So, two of our policies were not followed by you, but we bent the rules to allow you to stay at our cabin anyway.
All of our guests find that we provide very clear and helpful information regarding policies, local places of interest to visit, etc. Our pet policy is clearly stated on the agreement you received the day you booked and it is a very liberal one compared to most vacation rentals. You could have cancelled at that point.
Much needed relaxing vacation delivered!
When you are looking to get away from the world and need to escape Applewood Cabin in West Virginia is definitely the place to go. Off the beaten path and in the George Washington National Forest, Applewood is the perfect place for those who love the outdoors and want some peace and quiet.
Everything that I expected from the VRBO description and pictures of the property was spot on and Sue and Jim's details on how to get to and into the cabin were perfect. I would fully recommend staying here and if the time comes again would definitely come back!
