About the property

Cottage in Lahos, Nr. Frikes, Ithaca Island, Greece - Peaceful Location yet Close to the Coast.

This simple, whitewashed cottage was built over a hundred years ago. It has been renovated and updated to make a comfortable family home but still retains its old world character with its arched windows, ancient shutters and original wooden ceilings. It is light and airy, with at least 2 windows in each bedroom. Two french doors open onto the sun terrace from the open plan living room and kitchen. The kitchen is has a full cooker and large fridge/freezer. There is also a large shower room containing a washing machine. It is tiled in terracotta throughout.

About Michael Simpson

I'm a retired film maker who has always loved Greece. I found and restored this cottage 19 years ago.

Michael Simpson purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Michael Simpson chose Ithaki

I fell in love with this cottage because of its location and character.

What makes this cottage unique

Looking out over the countryside from the terrace.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just a short line to say how much we enjoyed ourselves at Lahos. The cottage was perfect, the village peaceful and the whole area ideal to have the most relaxing holiday. Every thing we needed was there and the whole place was the better than we could have hoped for.

Thanks. Jack and Carol

We thought that Rhiannon Cottage was good value for money and pleasantly located. Handy for Frikes, which is a fishing village with a few good restaurants - very pleasant. The views from the terrace are very nice and the building has retained a lot of old charm. It was well appointed and made for a comfortable stay. Ithaca is small, beautiful and quiet. If you like this, with good Greek food and pleasant people then you will be happy. If you need organised entertainment, lots of high profile tourist attractions or jet-skis and McDonalds then you will be very disappointed. Doug and Mary Williams.

A delicious stay- hard to tear ourselves away. The cottage and location perfect, thank you so much. I hope we can come back one day. Caroline Webb.

We all loved Rhiannon Cottage and its beautiful setting. We had been looking for the "authentic Greek experience" for some years and definitely found Ithaca to be what we had been hoping for. Reyneke family.

Our fourth visit to Ithaca and our second stay at Rhiannon Cottage. We love its Greek character and simplicity and sitting on the terrace or in the garden in the evening is divine. The Washer family.

Lovely unspoilt cottage on lovely unspoilt island.

  • 5 of 5

The house is slightly old-fashioned and feels very "Greek", which we loved. The beds were comfortable, the hot water very reliable and the shower good. Kitchen facilities were fine and it was nice to arrive to a bowl of fruit and some tea and coffee.

The terrace, surrounded by prickly pears and oleanders, with a view of the hills, was a perfect place to be, except in the middle of the day, when it was too hot for some, but there are other shady areas of the garden where you can sit. We did have to use anti-mosquito products when sitting out in the evenings, and found the plug-in ones useful for the night ( you can get packs of insecticide tablets from Kiki's amazing wonder-store in Frikes, as well as pretty well anything else you might need). The cottage is 5 minutes from Frikes and 10 from Stavros, so very well located, but you

do need a hire car.

As for the island, it is quite beautiful, partly because it is so mountainous, affording glorious views. For those like me, who find mountain roads challenging, be reassured: the roads are mostly excellent, with crash-barriers on the precipice side, so I coped well, only refusing to go up to the

Monastery above Exogi.

Beaches: Polis, below Stavros, is lovely and has facilities ( cafe, toilets, sun beds), but our favourite was "K2" ( second one along, between Frikes

and Kioni), quiet, fascinating rock formations & a wall to sit on to get changed!), glorious mountain views.

Restaurants : tried all 3 at Frikes, all good, all on the water's edge.

Also, Donna Lefkas at Lefkas (posh food), and Ithiki Restaurant in Stavros: Prawns with saganaki and fennel- delicious.

What to see: Kathara Monastery, Anogi (stuffed aubergines terrific, wall-paintings in church & wonderful walk up to Old Anogi), School of Homer ( Odysseus' Palace?) Esther does guided walks, very good, and she shortened ours as we are all knocking on a bit!. Vahi, very picturesque, busy, good for souvenirs. Excellent fish soup in the alley leading to the folk museum (shut that day, for technical reasons!).

It's just a pity Ithaka is difficult to get to in September, but we did drink from the spring at Kalamos, so our return is assured! We loved it.

Charming rural cottage, sympathetically restored to retain authenticity, close to Frikes & beaches.

  • 5 of 5

Rhiannon cottage provided a perfect location for our stay on Ithaca. It is close to the Stavros village, the pretty little port Frikes and the wonderful beaches in Afales Bay.

The cottage is simple and charming and well equipped.

Michael and Britta (the housekeeper) were extremely helpful and even sourced an additional fan as the temps reached 35-40 degrees!

I would certainly recommend Rhiannon cottage and would love to return to Ithaca again (soon!)

A charming home from home on a wonderful island

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is small but nicely done - we felt quickly comfortable and at home. Michael and Britta were very helpful answering questions and sorting things and the place was very clean and with everything we needed. We loved Ithaca, nearby Stavros, Frikes, and all the little coves and beaches - often empty and not overcrowded even in August. We'd love to come back to the island and the cottage!

Note that to get to one bedroom you need to go through either one of the others (see floorplan) wasn't a problem for our family - we spent most our time there on the terrace! - but might not suit everyone.

Idyllic retreat

  • 5 of 5

The perfect setting for our stay in Ithaca. Michael was extremely helpful in the build up to our holiday even going as far as to keep us updated with ferry timetables. The cottage itself was great with all the facilities needed for a comfortable stay. Being able to sit out on the terrace overlooking the spectacular landscape allowed us to escape and unwind. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat that is within driving distance of fabulous beaches, walks and restaurants than we would highly recommend a stay.

Met our expectations for a charming, individual villa

  • 5 of 5

We spent a lot of time researching a villa for our holiday. We were determined to find somewhere that would be charming and individual. Rhiannon cottage certainly lived up to our expectations. It is well equipped but not glitzy in any way - as is fitting for the type of property. There are other properties nearby but they are detached and not too close. The property is not overlooked - that gives it a good feel. During the run up to the holiday, the owner Michael was very helpful in promptly answering our e mailed questions.

Idyllic peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely holiday on the magical island of Ithaca.

Rhiannon cottage was in a beautiful rural location close to the traditional, friendly village of Stavros & pretty Frikes bay.

We had a warm welcome from Britta who looks after the property. The cottage was clean & spacious with good facilities.

We found lovely tavernas & local shops in the nearby villages & enjoyed spectacular drives into the mountains. There are beautiful bays for swimming close by.

We had a really wonderful holiday & would like to return one day.

17 minute walk to the sea (2 minutes driving). 25 minute walk to nearest beach (4 minutes driving).

The nearest airport is Argostoli in Kefalonia. Cars can be hired from the airport but are best booked in advance. If you are not hiring a car, a taxi from the airport to the port of Sami takes roughly forty minutes and costs about E40. The ferry takes half an hour to the Ithacan port of Piso Aetos and costs about about E3. A further taxi from the port to Lahos takes half an hour and costs about E30.

The cottage is set in half an acre of olive and almond trees on a winding country lane 5 minutes drive from the village of Stavros and 2 minutes from the tiny fishing port of Frikes. The nearest beach is 4 minutes drive.

Kioni, a "picture postcard" village used by the upmarket holiday companies, is a five minute drive from Frikes.

Further Details:

The small harbour of Frikes is a popular calling in point for yachts but still retains a laid back charm. It has four tavernas, a bar and two small grocers. You can also rent motorbikes and boats by the day. There are a series of small cove beaches beyond Frikes on the road to Kioni. Other beaches can be reached by boat. Walking, writing and pilates holidays are available locally. See Rhiannon Cottage website is at
