The beautiful beaches at Viareggio, Lido di Camaiore, Torre del lago-Puccini, Forte dei Marni are all within 40 minutes drive. Further afield going north is the magnificent Cinque Terre (5 fishing villages steeply built on the coastline) and going south the island of Elba (just over an hour's drive to Piombino to catch a ferry across to this beautiful island).

Travel:

Pisa airport (Ryanir, Easyjet, British Airways, Thompson) is the nearest airport and is about a 40 minute drive. Genoa and Bologna are also close by. A car is recommended and can be hired direct from the airport (Hertz, AutoEurope, etc) although you can travel by train via Lucca.

Distances:

Lucca - 15kms - 20 mins

Pisa/Viareggio - 30kms - 40 mins

Florence - 60kms - 45 mins

Abetone - 40 kms - 1hr

Cinque Terre - 90kms - 90mins

Further Details:

Valdottavo is self sufficient in that there are many small grocer stores selling good quality local produce for your everyday needs, a superb butcher's shop which you must try, a chemist & tobac. All the locals are very friendly and as long as you try to speak some Italian you will be very satisfied with the response! Lucca is about 20 mins away and there is a large supermarket on the way there. Lucca is absolutely beautiful! A smaller version of Florence but with far less tourists! You can walk or cycle on top of the medieval walls which are wide and provide plenty of shade with their tree lined avenues. Many festivals, concerts and street markets are held throughout the year and is well worth the visit.

Perfect for 3

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely 9 days in Valdottavo . The house was clean and we'll equipt with all that we needed. It was very hot weather when we were there but we were able to keep the house reasonably cool if we kept the shutters closed when we went out. The location of the house was perfect for what we needed and the small patio area was great for dining outside. The village with its two bars, a pizzaria and small shops were within walking distance and there is a large supermarket only 10 inutes away.

We had a car so were able to visit lots of local areas that are mentioned in Paul's very comprehensive information file. I would defiantly recommend visiting Lucca an easy only 20 minute and when we went we had no problems parking . We hired bikes for a few euros each and cycled round on top of the towns old walls which was lovely as it was shady. Pisa is easy to reach and we spent a lovely afternoon visiting the sights including going up the tower.

Other notable places to visit if hot are : the coast Just south of Levorno. There is swimming off the rocks just below the coast road. The water was beautifully warm but the current is strong. There are however some safe areas of rock pools that have been created by what I I believe was due to the mining of the stone. There is a sandy beach at Livorno if you prefer parasols and having a life guard.

Nearer to the property in the opposite direction going up the valley we discovered a small spar and wellbeing hotel complex at Borgo Giusto where we were able to swim in their pool for 10 euros each. It was beautiful as the pool over looks the village. There are apparently several public pools in the near by villages but we didn't go to them We did however locate one of the river swimming areas, mentioned in the file ,on several occasions The water was beautifully clean and refreshing and we had great fun playing in the small rapids and rock pools.

About an hour away is the gorge Oriddo di Botri which if you like walking and don't mind getting wet ,is a must but you do need some shoes that are enclosed and can get wet as part of the walk is scrambling over rocks and wading into the river. When we went it was 35 + degrees in the sunshine and it was a perfect temperature down in the gorge and full of butterflies.

Very clean and excellently equipped, yet not to confortable

  • 5 of 5

The location is exceptionally good. Same about the condition of the house and the perks offered. Paul, the host is a nice person.

Some discomfort results from the fact that the shower and the tube are located two stores down the bedrooms.

At the bottom line this property deserves 8.5 on a scale of 0 to 10.

Fantastic Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week in May and had a wonderful holiday. The weather was kind to us and we had mainly dry and sunny days which makes what is a beautiful area truly spectacular.

The house is very clean and well equipped with a lot of attention to detail. The interior is fairly modern but what it lacks in rustic charm it well makes up for with convenience and ease of use. The shower and bath are great and having the en-suite upstairs avoids any long trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night! The beds are very comfortable and combined with having the traditional shutters you can achieve a very good sleep!

Outside space is well planned and catches the sun for most of the day and was again very well equipped with sun beds and tables and chairs.

Location is excellent - the trip from Pisa airport using the SS12 takes just under an hour and isn't too hairy for a 1st drive in Italy. (you can also use the toll road which would be quicker). The driveway is narrow and will only fit a small car but if you don't mind carrying things for a short walk then you can park safely elsewhere. We loved the village - lots of small shops for essentials, a bus which you can take to Lucca, friendly locals and a couple of bars. Further afield Lucca is exceptional - this time we only made one trip but have in the past have spent many happy days looking around and enjoying the food and shopping. We had 2 fab long walks in the mountains and if you like walking this is a paradise for walkers with great mountain walking 1/2 hour to 1 hour away - loads of choice and views which have to be up there with the best. Mostly the footpaths are well marked and easy to follow. We ran out of time to visit some of the towns in the area but they would have also been very rewarding so plenty to do and see.

We would love to go back and would happily stay in the house again. Paul was very efficient with the booking, communication, helpful info and the return of the deposit so we would have no concerns with staying their again.

A brilliant holiday rental

  • 5 of 5

The property was extremely well equipped and located in a village with a good range of shops and amenities. The house was very clean, well decorated and comfortable.

It's location in Tuscany meant it was very easy to travel to a wide range of places of interest, both towns/cities like Pisa, Florence & Siena or walks in the hills/mountains.

I would definitely recommend this property to friends & family!
