About the property

Villa on Msambweni Beach, Kenya Coast - Peaceful Area with Private Access to White Beach

'Samawati' means 'a heavenly place' in the native Digo tongue. This is an Arabesque Swahili house on a pristine 2km stretch on Kenya's Indian Ocean seaboard. There are 4 spacious bedrooms, 3 large communal rooms, bar, dining room, kitchen, outside patios and large infinity edge swimming pool. Set up on a cliff above the beach, the villa and pool enjoy sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. Access to the beach is via a private path - about 60 metres in length.

Susan Church purchased this villa in 1984

Why Susan Church chose Kenya Coast

We bought virgin land on the beach in 1984. This is a 9 acre elevated plot with fantastic views of the Indian Ocean through a grove of coconut palms. We enjoy sea breezes all year round. Below is a 2km white beach. There are no hotels, bars or restaurants to disturb the peace. Sometimes, the only people on the beach are the local Digo fishermen going out in their dug-out canoes to bring home their catch. We enjoy delicious sea food meals every day. We built the Arabesque Lamu style villa in 1985 - a double storey 4 bedroomed coastal home in which all bedrooms are upstairs facing the sea. The dawn colours are breathtaking. The house is surrounded by indigenous trees - a paradise for birds and our local troupe of cheeky vervet monkeys!

What makes this villa unique

We love Msambweni for its unspoilt beach, safe swimming, good snorkelling on the outer reefs, great for kite and wind surfing Susie and I enjoy sailing, swimming and walking. Msambweni is very peaceful - no nightclubs, bars or restaurants - drive to Diani 25kms north for these facilities You can hire a local fisherman to take you hand line fishing for tropical fish in a native canoe. Professional fishermen can drive 45 minutes south to Shimoni for deep sea bill fishing We have a beautiful infinity swimming pool close to the house, where we relax in complete privacy We have a popular ping pong table in the Majlis Room Samawati is one of the most outstanding private villas on the East African coast A full complement of staff make you welcome and comfortable - it is an idyllic paradise!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Firstly, apologies for the late contact, i had to get over the depression of being back to the daily grind! I wish to say that your arrangements and facilities at Samawati house precipitated an inevitable conclusion of a fantastic holiday in Kenya. Thank you for all the arrangements you made with respect to safari and vehicle hire. It all proceeded wonderfully without effort from us. I personally want to congratulate you or whomsoever you employed for the design of Samawati (Tony Church), the views, layout, decor and staff arrangements were a complete and admirable package. Please pass on again my thanks to the staff at Samawati, particularily to Stephen and Katana for their efforts and attention to detail. We procured some wonderful memories as a result of having a restful and special place to reside in during our stay in Kenya. We have, of course passed on our reccommendations to friends and colleagues.

With special thanks

Kevin Walker

Notes on accommodation: The house is spread across an elevated site with its own 200 metres of white beach. It offers an air of privacy combined with intimacy. All the furniture is hand carved by Swahili craftsmen. It is an ideal retreat for family holidays, enjoying the safe, warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Newly added is a stunning swimming pool. The pool affords excellent views of the indigenous forest below the house, and Indian Ocean beyond. As one relaxes in the pool, monkeys play in the trees, the breeze gently sways the palm trees, and a true sense of bliss is realised! Outside: Samawati is situated on 9 acres of lush coastal vegetation with indigenous trees which include coconut palms, doum palms, tamarind trees, mango trees and a baobab. Patios with Swahili seats and sunbeds give way to sweeping lawns. We have a large free form infinity edge pool with a tinkling waterfall into the shallow end. Four sunbeds for relaxing under the tree that hangs over the deep end of the pool. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / House staff: Towels and linen are included. The property is taken care of by five members of staff employed permanently to clean, cook, garden and take care of guests. Other: Dining room - Swahili carved large dining table seating 8 pax on Swahili carved chairs. Carved dresser for crockery. Lovely views through the arches and across the lawn to the ocean.

Activities: Snorkeling, swimming, reefing are enjoyed from the house. Within a 30 minute drive at the famous Diani Beach you have golf, windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, camel rides, tennis, scuba diving and deep sea fishing. The best bill fishing for the avid deep sea fishing sportsman is 45 minutes drive south to Shimoni at the Pemba Channel Fishing Club. Further inland you have the enormous Tsavo National Park.

Samawati House is on an elevated site overlooking the Msambweni Bay through a grove of coconut palms. The house is set on a coral cliff about 60 metres from a broad sandy beach 2kms long from headland to headland. At low tide there are tidal pools and excellent goggling on the Msambweni Reef some 400 metres from the shore. Msambweni is a working beach with the local Digo fishermen paddling or sailing out in their dugout canoes in traditional style to catch their daily meals.

Fly by scheduled flight into Mombasa International Airport and then drive (chauffeur or self drive) 35 miles south on the main tarmac road to Tanzania until you reach the D544 junction to Msambweni District Hospital. Follow this tarmac road for 6km and continue through the Hospital grounds and onwards for another 2kms until you reach the house (signboarded).

Preferably take Safarilink/Air Kenya flight to Ukunda only 20 kms from Msambweni. We will arrange car hire or taxi for you.

Msambweni is 540kms by road from Nairobi. It is 56 kms south of Mombasa. Diani shopping area is 25kms away. Msambweni village is 2kms offering basic foodstuffs at wayside kiosks. Fresh fish, crustacea, fruit and vegetables are brought to the back door.
