About Gill Mayo

As a set builder for film and television Ged Mayo is used to working with his hands but back in 2002 he dreamt of working on a project that would last more than just a few months. ‘I longed to put my time and energy into building something permanent’. Gill came to the project from her background in interiors. ‘We were both keen to work on a property that had plenty of character and was close to some of Italy’s key attractions, so decided to look for properties around the central regions of Tuscany and Umbria.

There was something really special about the hilltop location of Colcello and its aura of calm and tranquility. The painstaking renovation and restoration took three years. ‘We love the idea that the farmhouse and its beautiful surroundings can now be shared and enjoyed by guests'

Gill Mayo purchased this villa in 2002

Why Gill Mayo chose Citta di Castello

Back in 2002 we set about finding a place to share and spend time with family and friends, where we could soak up the unique spirit and character of this beautiful part of Tuscany and Umbria.

We couldn't resist the incredibly beautiful setting of Casa Colcello or the honey coloured stone walls smoothed and weathered by nature over the years. Its special aura of calm and peacefulness amongst natural surroundings, ancient terracotta floor tiles and rich red roof tiles patterned with lichens and mosses - the farmhouse was almost in ruins, but had an abundance of potential and incredible uninterrupted veiws. We were hooked!

During renovations the emphasis has always been on conserving the original atmosphere and the historic style of the house without neglecting comfort and modern standards.

What makes this villa unique

Colcello a place that you can enjoy space, privacy and comfort. A real home from home. A unique hide away bathed in sun by day when children can chase geckos, explore and swim; adorned by magical fireflies and stars at night. Some just relax and enjoy the odd meal or two cooked by our in house caterers who prepare delicious organic Italian food. Others like to explore the region, its all close-by and waiting from sophisticated cities like Perugia to quaint sleepy hill top villages like nearby Monte Santa Maria Tiberina or Montone and art treasure troves such as Florence and Arezzo. Alternatively you may get to know the locals at one of the many festivals or local markets held throughout the summer. Foodies can enjoy a variety of wine, truffles, pasta and local seasonal specialties. Enjoy!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Gill & Ged - Just a belated thanks for allowing my family to rent your beautiful house.

We've travelled a significant amount throughout Italy and have stayed in numerous rental properties.

However, we were stunned by the sheer beauty of the Umbrian hills and your gorgeous property felt like a home rather than a "rental".

Many thanks again and we hope to have the opportunity to book your home at some point in the near future.

Kind regards

Tania Bennett

"Hi Gill, just to let you know that we all had a fantastic time in

Umbria. The villa is amazing, you have restored it beautifully. The setting and surroundings are fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 meals that we had prepared at the villa. The whole thing was wonderful.

Many thanks Danielle"
