Our village house in Villecroze was built around 1790 along the perimeter of the “vieux village” that dates back to medieval times. The front of the house faces the old village and the rear of the house has beautiful views over the countryside. The house has been totally restored over the last few years under the direction of a local architect and all the original architectural features have remained intact.
Villecroze is a charming small village nestled in the heart of the green and luscious countryside of the Haut Var region of the Cote d’Azur. Villecroze is noted for its grotto where a waterfall drops over the face of limestone cliffs in which ancient caves were fortified by a local lord during the XVI century to be used a refuge against military attacks.
The two bedroom apartment occupies two floors of the village house. The first floor includes the kitchen, living room and dining area. An interior staircase leads to the second level with two bedrooms, bath, and laundry with washer and dryer. Windows at front of house overlook vieux village and windows at back of house overlook country side with park, vineyards, and olive groves.
Kitchen: Brand new fully equipped kitchen with new appliances, including cooktop, oven, refrigerator, and dishwasher and breakfast table.
Living Room: Large L shaped sofa with sofa table, flat screen television with local channels and DVD. The sofa opens into a sofa bed that can accommodate two people.
Dining Area: Dining area between kitchen and living room has a dining table with 6 chairs.
Bedroom 1: Large room with antique double bed (new mattress), dresser, and hanging rack.
Bedroom 2: Small sitting room with sofa bed and closet.
Bathroom: Tile bath with shower and new washer/dryer.
We live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area where our children attend Lycee Francais de San Francisco. We love the small villages of Provence and Villecroze is among the most beautiful villages in the area.
Bob Kirby purchased this house in 2001
We bought our village house in 2001. The house was built in the late 1700s and is located on the perimeter of the old village at the base of the stairs that lead to the old village. The back of the house overlooks a beautiful park and the countryside with olive trees and vineyards. The house is actually two villages houses that were combined and we converted the upper three floors of the "uphill" house into two charming apartments. It was quite a project! The studio apartment occupies one full floor of the house on the second level and the duplex apartment occupies two full floors of the house on the third and fourth levels. Both apartments have accessed by an inner staircase and have private entrances. The apartments have full kitchens, laundry, and large windows with shutters.
Villecroze is a lovely village for walking around with a plaza where there are tow restaurants and a hotel, a large church, a restored village wash house where the laundry was done by hand many years ago, petanque courts, tennis courts, a wonderful park with trees and flower beds, and a waterfall that flows over limestone cliffs that have caves carved in them by inhabitants from the middle ages.
Attractions nearby include the Gorge du Verdon (the Grand Canyon of France), the Abbey du Thoronet, and beaches in Frejus and St Tropez are 45 minutes away.
Hello once more Bob,
I hope that summer finds you well.
I wanted to dash off one last email to extend our collective thanks.. our trip to Villecroze (and stay at your abode) was truly WONDERFUL.
Some day, Id like to know how you found this charming little village. :)
The house was fantastic. Anne was very kind and helpful. And we had a terrific week.
So much so that our conversation has revolved around when we want to go back.
The reality of Southern France exceeded any/all expectations I certainly had.... and we feel very lucky we had this opportunity.
Thank you... so very much

We stayed a weekend at the villa and loved it. The town was very cute and traditional - exactly what I imagined. From the moment we got there Annie made us feel very welcome. We managed with a lot of sign language and nodding. The facilities in the villa were excellent. Everything we needed. We had 2 wonderful meals in the town square. The distance to the coast was possibly greater than I imagined but there was plenty to do in the area if you don't feel like travelling. All in all a wonderful weekend.
Stayed at Maison Rose with my sister. We found it easily from the map supplied and with good parking close by. The apartment was beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean & comfortable. If you have mobility issues though this appartment is accessed via a steep staircase. The old village was literally on our doorstep and what a village - like a pearl inside a shell! Just a short walk away, off the village square are the most amazing troglodyte caves. This area is full of stunning villages and thanks to the book and other good tourist information at the apartment we found most of them. Maison Rose is perfectly placed to explore this region. Villecroze is central to this area and within easy driving of many interesting places. Of the villages, Tourtour is a particular beauty. Aups had one of the best and reasonably priced restaurants in Auberge de la Tour. Also a must is a trip up to the lake and Grand Canyon of Verdon where you can take a pedallo ride into the gorge.
We really enjoyed our stay in this well appointed, clean and charming appartment. Everything was well organised and all our needs were met. We were attending a local wedding so didn't spend much time actually in the appartment, but the beds were comfortable, the bathroom very clean and we appreciated the use of a washing machine. While we didn't have the opportunity to do any cooking, the facities were there, and it was nice to have a dishwasher. Our local contact, Annie, was most obliging when we asked for more linen and all in all we had a very pleasant time.
Frejus, St Tropez and other beaches on the Riviera are located 45 minutes by car from Villecroze. Lac Ste Croix and the Gorges du Verdon are 30 minutes away by car.
Villecroze is located about midway between airports at Marseilles and Nice, about 20 kilometers west of Draguignan. Travel times are about 1.5 hours from Marseilles and 1.25 hours from Nice.
House is in the vieux village of Villecroze and a 5 minute walk to restaurants, park, tennis courts, post office, etc. Villecroze is within 20 km of Salernes, Lorgues, Thoronet, Entrecasteau, Cotignac, Tourtour and Aups, all towns that are descrbed in the Michelin Green Guide.
There is a market on the plaza in Villecroze every Thursday morning. The house is adjacent to the Villecroze Academy of Music and there are classical music concerts on many weekends during the summer at a 13th century chapel located a short walk from the house. There is a tennis club in Villecroze that accepts reservations from guests.
