La Rongere is a beautiful late 18th century chateau with an 11th century tower. It makes a great family summer house with lots of big windows and doors to the large manicured gardens. There is an organic vegetable garden, and a roserie. It has a real rustic, country farm house feel more so than an immaculate French Chateau. The heated pool is 10mx4m and is situated 100 yards away from the house. A stone wall surrounds the pool to ensure the safety of children.

A truly magical and restful place to spend a holiday!
This place has five stars for good reason. Everything about it was wonderful — from the maze-like array of rooms to the amazing grounds with endless activities. And everyone associated with the property was fantastic to deal with, starting with the incredibly patient Bridget, who helped resolve an inadvertently overly complicated booking, to Kate who graciously and seemingly effortlessly wore many hats during the week from caretaker to masseuse to caterer — it's a shame that visitors after September won't meet her as she is moving back to the UK, but I look forward to visiting her massage therapy business after she gets set up! And thanks too to Annie for the fabulous last night dinner (if you are thinking about having any meals catered, I highly recommend it — the food was perfection and the cost very reasonable) and the suggestion to take a final photo with everyone in the chateau windows.
As for the house, it took ages to figure out who went in what bedroom because there are so many rooms and rooms off of rooms. This is one place where a floorpan isn't really much use, so I suggest getting advice from Bridget or simply waiting until you're there to sort it out (we ended up not using all the rooms). But what rooms! From the largest room up one level with the shower in the tower to the princess bed single room, there is something for everyone (which was part of the challenge). But do be aware that some of the bedrooms feed into each other, so best if everyone is on friendly terms! :)
We were grateful for our one partially rainy day because we finally made use of the gorgeous dining room. Otherwise, all of our meals were held outside with the large kitchen as a hangout hub, made more so because of the comfy couch and arm chair. And the small lounge off to the side was a perfect place for pre-dinner cocktails and oysters bought in Cancale (a day trip worth doing)!
I could go on, but suffice it to say that I highly recommend staying here. It feels like a well-loved family home but of a grand scale — one that is elegant but not precious, and above all, welcoming. As one of my friends wrote after we left, "It was honestly one of the best holidays we've had and absolutely the most memorable." Thank you for making my birthday celebration so memorable for me and my family and friends. I couldn't think of a more perfect spot to spend the week and ring in the next decade!
(Note: we rented the cottage as well, and I'm putting a separate review there.)
Serene, calming, beautifully aged
This property has reserved all the charm that centuries of use has given it while having just the right amount of modern conveniences to make our stay comfortable. We had the best nights sleep and memorable days. Whether we spent our time at the castle or went to a local attraction, nothing disappointed.
Rustic but with modern amenities in a beautiful setting
What an awesome stay. The house and grounds are lovely. The house is rustic, but it is also from the 11th century. Rooms are spacious and the kitchen is cozy. We loved the dining room, which has a really long table and can accommodate 12 or more people. The owner Bridget was so easy to work with and Kate who helps manage the property was wonderful. She cooked us a very delicious meal, but hurry if you are going to use her as she will be returning to England in 6 months. Our family would absolutely choose to stay at the Chateau again if the opportunity arose. Thanks Bridget and Kate for an amazing experience.
Thank you very much Julie. Your group was wonderful and treated the chateau so well. We hope to have you as guests again in the future!
beautiful chateau in immaculate gardens
This is an amazing place to stay with extended family and friends. There is loads of space in the grounds (yes really!) for the kids to explore, bounce on the trampoline, swim or play in the sandpit.
The bedrooms are charming and rustic with huge beams (mind your head) this is the ideal place for a large group, it is a labyrinth, you really can get lost in it. There are 14 known bedrooms but others still undiscovered i think!
The pool area is beautifully maintained as are the gardens. There are not many places to go out, but when we are staying here we don't want to. We just cook meals in the big country kitchen complete with Aga and ancient fireplace. This is a magical place and we hope to come back every year.
A wonderful week.
We have just returned after a fabulous week in France. The chateau was lovely and it suited our family immensely, 10 adults 6 children.. We all loved the feel of the place and the freedom that the house and grounds gave us. The children were able to wander and play in and out of the house with great freedom. The ping pong table, pool and sand pit were particularly enjoyed. But saying that so was the trampoline and the swings. We had many a ping pong tournament as well as boules in the drive in the evening, usually played after some g@t’s.
The weather was very good and so all meals were taken outside , many until late at night. One child had a birthday party which included all playing egg and spoon and other such games. Wonderful memories.
Annie and John, the couple who oversee the chateau, were so welcoming and helpful , they are a real boon to the place. They were able to pass onto us a sense of being relaxed about the house and grounds. Annie cooked for us one night and the meal was terrific.
The chateau is very well equipped, the bed linen is of a good quality, good facilities such as dishwasher , washing machine and so on.
It was a magical week staying at La Rongere. So many thanks for your help and would you please pass on my thanks to Bridget Elworthy for such a wonderful place to be able to stay in.
I have already recommended this place to friends.
An absolute delight
We had a fantastic week with friends in this large and very comfortable chateau. The children loved the gardens, pool, and well-kept grounds. We adored the ease and convenience of the place. Well- equipped kitchens and with attentive housekeeping on request. Fabulous. Recommended.
