|Minimum Stay||5 nights|
Set among terraces at 500 metres and reached by a narrow tarmac road, this newly restored farmhouse commands breathtaking mountain views. A shop in the next village supplies basic provisions - just a few minutes by car or a pleasant walk. Bagni di Lucca, with restaurants, outdoor swimming pool and thermal spa, is a 15 minute drive. The walled city of Lucca is 40 minutes and the small ski resort of Abetone under an hour. There are large sunny patios back and front (sunloungers and garden furniture provided) and a wild terraced garden of about 2 acres. The interior is typically Tuscan, with tiled floors, whitewashed walls and exposed chestnut and terracotta ceilings. Well equipped and comfortably furnished, the thick stone walls keep it cool in summer, while central heating and woodburning stove create a cosy haven in winter. The house provides an excellent base at any season for exploring the surroundings by car or on foot, and many beautiful walks start from the door.
Ken is a retired doctor and practicing psychoanalyst, Alice a retired RGN. We enjoy foreign travel but prefer independent holidays in quiet and interesting locations. We enjoy meeting people from different cultures and the moments of connection that transcend language barriers. We love beautiful and unspoiled scenery and closeness to nature is part of what we look for when we go away. As we've got older, we've enjoyed the feeling of making a home from home, while using the materials and idiom of the local culture. We enjoy the feeling of returning to these domains and renewing the friendships we've made.
Dr K J T Wright purchased this farmhouse in 2001
In some ways the house was a lucky chance. We went out to see a property we found on the internet and fell in love with the area for its forested mountains and beautiful rivers, its unspoiled peacefulness and friendly people. We then looked more seriously, viewing many, and the house we bought was the one we had put at the bottom of the list! The photo had portrayed a ruin with major work to be done but when we stepped out of the car the decision was instantaneous - the setting and view had bowled us over. It was close to a village with a village shop - now sadly closed - and only a a short car ride to Bagni di Lucca, an enchanting old spa town loved by the 19th C. literati, and now a sleepy market town with low key tourism. And somewhere in the ruin, we could see the house of our dreams.
What do we enjoy the most? Peace and relaxation, beautiful views, mountain gardening - we have built a beautiful rock herb-garden behind the house - walks straight from the door. Walking of all sorts - from the old mule tracks between the villages to strenuous mountain-walking on marked trails. The mountain air, the fireflies in June, the local food from a really good choice of restaurants. The outdoor swimming pool in Bagni di Lucca - one of the best we have seen. And the city of Lucca - a hidden mediaeval gem so much more manageable (and nearer) than Florence - with its mediaeval walls, palace lined streets with beautiful doorways, and incredibly tasteful and tempting shops! Finally, the house itself with its two patios that invite you just to sit and look... and look... and look...
"We had a wonderful time at your farmhouse. It was everything you advertised it to be and more!"
"We have never felt so at home whilst on holiday... The farmhouse is perfect in a perfect setting."
"Would have been content to laze around in this beautiful house - the best we have ever holidayed in."
"A truly wonderful holiday in your house... Hope to come back next year..."
"It was glorious, with such great views... Our favorite 'activity' was just to be at the house..."
We loved the property which had everything necessary. The views are outstanding and are only fully appreciated after a few days being there.
We loved the area, walks and river swimming.
Many thanks for sharing this beautiful location.
We left the uk with high expectations - a family of 4 with 2 children aged 10 and 17 - so not easy to please!
Simply put the house and the area was stunning and exceeded our expectations. The house(all you need and more) and location are perfect, the views, the sounds, the tranquility would be enjoyed by anyone. The location is ideal for visiting Florence, Lucca, Pisa etc - we used the trains from Bagni and found them very good - once we had found the station in Bagni.
Bagni itself has everything you need - good restaurants, local shops - the bread shop and the fruit and veg shop in particular. We all enjoyed too much Gelato. Our Daughter loved the swimming pool once there she hardly came out of the water - a great value day at 6.50 euros per day and never really got overly busy.
The ultimate compliment I can make is that all of us said tht this was the best overall holiday experience we have had - and we have done similar all over France previously - and we will be returning.
This is the third time that we have stayed at this property but the first time with a young family - two children under five - and we just love it!
If you want to be in the middle of town and able to walk to a restaurant or a night club then this wouldn't be for you. However if you like peace and quiet, some time to reflect on life, the ability to cook a hearty meal in a well equipped kitchen and then sit and eat it with a bottle or two of good Italian wine whilst looking over the valley listening to the chiming of the sheep bells and the insects chirruping; then this is the place.
We have stayed in the property in early and late summer and also winter. It is well equipped and always clean. There is a log burner and central heating if it gets chilly and the thick stone walls tend to keep it cool in the summer.
We have stayed in other properties in the region but it is this one that we are always attracted back to.
In Bagni Di Lucca there are good restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets that are child friendly. The swimming pool is great and if you fancy it, you can walk down to the town in an hour or so and catch the local bus back home. There are a couple of perfectly adequate supermarkets and a lovely twice weekly market where you can stock up on provisions to make the aforementioned meals.
We hope to be able to return to Longoio in the near future for another stay.
Thank you again Ken & Alice.
We stayed in this fantastic house in August 2013, and had a wonderful week's holiday. The house is in the best location, and the views over the valley from the garden and terrace are outstanding. The house is extremely comfortable with three lovely bedrooms, and a very nice living and dining room. The kitchen was extremely well-equipped, which meant that self-catering was a pleasure. The weather was perfect throughout our stay, so we very much enjoyed eating outside all week at the large table overlooking the valley. In terms of outings, we found a lovely mountain river a short drive away, where we all swam, and our three children had a great time diving from the rocks. We also had some excellent day trips from the house. Lucca was a very easy drive, and we all hired bikes there and cycled around the city. Pisa is also within easy striking distance and Bagni di Lucca is very pleasant, and is great for shopping and ice creams. We also enjoyed visiting the nearby villages and walking to the shop in the nearby village to buy provisions. There are some very pleasant local walks around the woods behind the house as well. Thanks to Jayne and Kevin, too, who were at hand on our arrival and who made us feel very welcome and gave us plenty of local advice. We are determined to return as soon as possible, but next time we hope to stay for a fortnight, as a week was just not enough!
Arrived at this casa after a difficult journey from airport, which required some assistance from the house keepers of the casa, who were not at all helpful assisting us in finding the casa(they do not come out after 7.0.p.m.)The casa was EXTREMELY difficult to find, and directions given by owner were wholly inadequate, looking for log piles, olive trees, and stone house in an area never visited ,and in the pitch black of night would have been impossible in the daylight, never mind the dark. The road from Bagni Di Lucca to longoio where the casa is situated was horrendous, blind bends ,and fast drivers coming in opposite direction. The journey every evening to visit restaurants was a real drag, taking 10mins,and unsuitable for evening journeys.Restaurants were very poor in Bagni Di Luca, and in café bar on corner of square were given a cup of coffee that was just like warm milk, sent it back and it was warmed in microwave...!!!!this is not the Italy I know. The casa was in a lovely spot, with fine views. There are wild cats which demand to be feed every morning as soon as you get up...waiting at the back door...rather annoying, and very many different species of dead ,and alive insects on the floors of casa..including scorpions. The shops in Bagni Di Luca are dying on their feet, and poor quality.
We stayed there 2 adults and 2 kids 11-24.06.2013. At first we were a little afraid - because steep road went up and up in hills with no signs of civilization :) But up in the mountins surroundings were wonderful and peaceful. We spent splendid 2 weeks there enjoying sun, quiteness, fire flies and sheep bells. We've never seen fire flies before and I can't even describe this unbelievable view. House surroundings and outside terrace are wonderful. We also went couple of times to next village shop. More shops, market and restaurants are in Bagni di Lucca as well as comunal pool.
The house itself included everything we needed and we were happy to stay there, even had sweet cherries in the garden :)
Would recommend to everyone who wants to be away from noise, people and cars.
We noticed pool at the next house and no one was staying there at that time - may be owners could agree for a small fee to use pool for a swim.
The sandy Mediterranean beaches of Viareggio and Massa Maritima are about 75 minutes by car.
Flights to Pisa (Ryanair) from Stansted: 2 hour flight. Easyjet fly from Gatwick and Luton.
The house is a 1hr 20min drive from the airport.
Ryanair also fly to Genoa, a 2hr 30 min drive to the house.
Car hire is essential to get the most out of your stay.
There is a railway station at Bagni di Lucca (Fornoli) convenient for visits to Florence (goes to city centre).
Bagni di Lucca and Ponte a Seraglio with shops, banks, restaurants and twice weekly markets are 6km. Barga, a mediaeval walled town with summer music festival and beautiful 11th century cathedral, 15km. Lucca, 'city of art', has cultural events, antique markets and many fine shops, 25 km. Abetone ski resort, 35km. Pisa, with its leaning tower, 'Campo Santo' and riverside palaces, 45km.
The Garfagnana and Val di Lima are little known areas of Tuscany and still relatively unspoilt. The people are friendly and tourism is low key. Separated from the sea by the Apuan Alps and lying in the foothills of the Appennines, the region's scenery is wild and beautiful deer, wild boar and porcupine are plentiful - you may glimpse them on your travels and if you're lucky, in the garden. The landscape is dotted with mountain villages, each with its own charm. Longoio is one such village and at 500 metres escapes the worst of the summer heat. The area is ideal for walking at all levels, especially in spring and autumn. Escorted riding can be found near Bagni di Lucca, river bathing is possible in a number of places and caves can be visited at Grotto di Vento.
