I would like to start with thanking the excellent hosts Anna and Ali for another year of holiday bliss.
I would love to be able to write a review that stopped others from going to this lovely bit of France, but I can't. ( because that would be me being selfish) and I have already given details to my work colleagues.
Important... If you want Blackpool or Benidorm then this probably not the place for you. but you can go off and around the area.
If you want a tranquil, relaxing, chilling, friendly environment, with the ability to off and explore then this is probably the place to be.
We are a family of 5, with three over 20 children, We have only been back 3 days and all 3 over 20's are asking so what dates are we going for next year. And at this point I have to say NOT SOON ENOUGH. We have now been for 4 consecutive years, the most we have ever been to one location. This comes down to the relaxing atmosphere created by the host's, a beautiful and well maintained pool ( this is Ali's pride and joy, and it shows)
There are several things to do out and about at various locations and prices to suit most, The caves at Gurat (free) The caves at Brantome Monastery at 5e, the latter giving a fantastic insight into the growth of the town from the Monastery outwards. Oradour Sur Glenn the village is left standing as a tribute to the war memories again a fantastic but intriguing place as on entry you have various noises once into the village it is so quiet, see if you can count all the sewing machines in the village?? let alone the classic car relics. Shopping yes it is self catering, Super U at Villebois Lavalette has all your shopping needs as per a usual supermarket with plenty of local choice, and the cheapest fuel prices around, with several local shops in the town. Vertilliac has bar / tabac with other usual french small town attractions, butchers, bakers and a small supermarket (locally known as the Aladdin's Emporium) as this is cavernous store once inside and sells a lot of items that you thought you would never need, or never see again, both of these areas are about a 15 min drive, going further afield to Riberac a larger town about 30 min drive multiple supermarkets and several Artisan stores. Going even further afield you have Angouleme or even Bordeaux still within 1 to 1 1/2 hours drive, and great if the weather turns that little bit, it can, and believe it or not the weather is not controlled by the wonderful host's. Thank you, see you soon!!!!!!!
Many thanks for your lovely comments. It was certainly our pleasure to welcome you and your family again this summer. We look forward to your next visit!
Sally & Elle Heard - Cornwall
We have just returned from the most wonderful holiday as the guests of Anna and Ali in one of their beautiful traditional Gites at Les Mirabelles.
On arrival, the Gite was beautifully prepared, and very well equipped. We spent a number of lovely days resting and soaking up the sun either by the beautifully maintained pool or, when it became too hot, on our shaded veranda. At the time of our visit our Gite was surrounded by the most beautiful fields of wonderful sunflowers, making our stay even more special.
We are no strangers to the area and so took the opportunity to re-visit some favourite places including local villages and towns, a Chateau or two and of course the wonderful St Emilion. My only sadness is that I didn't book for longer, a mistake I wont be making next time...
Photos don’t do justice to this idyllic setting at La Petite Mirabelle w5* standard cleanliness and well maintained.
Sitting out on our private patio overlooking the sunflower fields with just a wee hop down to the very well maintained pool, Ali takes great pride in the pool, where our dogs would sit under the trees watching us splash about and played with Roqui, Ali and Anna’s dog and the other guest dogs, made for a really relaxing and happy holiday. The two bedroom Petite Mirabelle was set out well with the stone building giving respite from the outside heat, a must for our two year old grandchild, Ollie who loved his cool room! Cooking facilities with a full sized fridge freezer were a blessing but we ate outside every day and night with many meals on the full sized BBQ where we had some joint BBQ with other guests and Anna and Ali when we weren’t out at dinning in the local fab recommended restaurants.
Owners gave excellent friendly efficient service from both, nothing was too much.
When they say its dog friendly they really mean it as the dogs had such a good holiday running about playing with the other dogs with the freedom of the site. Anna says she always tells guests so that all are aware and love dogs, just as well as my dog Harris visited the other gites for extra breakfast and dinner.
Recommend to our friends and family and looking to go back again ourselves.
We especially enjoyed
Chez Fred in Allemans just 15 mins drive where the French chef delivered the best with his Glasgow wife Linda and Edinburgh born Graeme from the fab musical group Broken Biscuits it was a grand night. The locals joined us in a drink afterwards with the church bell singing out every 15 mins. It was simply great food, company and fun. Highly recommend the Angus steaks cooked to perfection with French style veg.
Tourbiere setting in a country park next to a lake with wooden floors and gazebo overhead the night was fully booked mostly with French and after eating our 28 euro meal with excellent recommended wine from waitress, we understand why this backwater restaurant is so popular. It was just Michelin star equivalent French food served with a fun informed staff with the chef coming out to see all 60 or so of us were happy. True local French cuisine with the Rio de Veau Au Cognac to die for.
Dignac’s medieval fete was just amazing taking over all of the old town and huge park only 6 euros entry for all day event.
Very Enjoyable Stay
Les Mirabelles was a perfect base for the relaxing type of holiday we were after. The accommodation was spotless when we arrived and was thoughtfully equipped with everything anyone could possibly need for a holiday; right down to fuel for the barbeque and insulated bags to take with you to the excellent Leclerc supermarket on the outskirts of Riberac. The pool was fantastic - a good size and situated in a suntrap at the bottom of the garden.
As we arrived late in the season, the weather was less predictable and although we had a few 'pool days', we spent a lot of time exploring the area. There are bikes available for anyone to use and it's ideal countryside for cycling. Nearby there is a small nature reserve in an area where peat used to be cut, where there are now pools with a multitude of wildlife. Here you can find the well hidden restaurant 'Des Tourbieres' where locals and holidaymakers alike are served simple but very good local cuisine. There are numerous towns and villages within the area where you can get a good 'plat de jour'. Best value is to be had if you eat out at lunchtime. Local markets are good , especially the Friday market at Riberac. Particularly scenic within the area are the towns of Brantome and Aubeterre. If you are prepared to venture further you can head for the Perigord Noir region where there are some amazing villages built into the rocks above the Dordogne and the Medieval town centre of Sarlat.
There is such a variety of things to do here, from canoeing and horseriding at one end of the scale, to chilling round the pool at the other, I think that most people would be able to find something to their taste. Anna and Ali know everything about the local area and are really helpful, so, all in all, highly recommended!
Relaxing, get a way from it all cottage
If you're looking for a relaxing, perfect holiday then La Petite Maison is the place for you! Equipped with everything that you could possibly wish for to make your holiday and finished off with a perfect sun trap terrace, where you can sit and eat while admiring the rolling fields and kestrels. The pool is a good size for swimming and there's shade too for when the sun gets too hot. The owners live on site and are fantastically welcoming and helpful with their local knowledge be it for a walk, good place to eat, or excellent place to visit. They also take pets and made our two dogs very welcome, giving them treats, recommending the best walks and always having time to fuss them. Roqui their dog is calm and friendly and took to sharing his property with two more dogs well!
We went to Brantome on their recommendation and would recommend this as an excellent day out. There's plenty of activities in the area:canoeing, peddalos, horse riding and foie gras tasting, should you want to fill the days, but La Petite Maison and the grounds were so relaxing that we unusually didn't feel the need to go too far too often!
I would definitely recommend this place for its relaxing air and the great hospitality offered by Anna, Ali and Roqui. Thank you all of you for making our holiday so perfect!
A little piece of paradise
In most cases I have seen a review is negative, I wonder why?
Well in this case I want to tell you how bad it is to stop you spoiling the place!!
Serious I wanted a chilled out relaxing holiday and that is exactly what I / we got. Ok my Sat Nav took me to the wrong location a phone call to the owners got me back on track. on arrival we were greeted like long lost friends, shown around the property and told where everything was including the pool and more than welcome to use even at 8pm to cool down and unwind after 19 hours on the road.
The site comprises of 4 gites including the lovely farmhouse all spotlessly clean. Les Mirabelles is an old converted barn with fantastic thick stone walls, the lower bedroom stayed lovely cool even through the heat of the day with an on suite toilet, the downstairs toilet and shower room was a great advantage, upstairs was 2 bedrooms a double and twin single of ample proportions and another toilet facility.
CAUTION the stairs to upstairs are steep and open there is a stair gate at the bottom but not at the top.
All facilities provided including washing machine and dishwasher. Gas kettle and full of rustic charm.
Outside the property is a gravel patio area with awning and table and chairs. A fantastic stone built BBQ and steps leading down to your own parking area and onward to the pool. The pool is fully enclosed with steps down into the shallow end and surrounded within the wall with gravel, personally I would like to have seen depth markers but I would guess the deep end is about 2 metres, and more sunbeds, if the gites are full it could become crowded.
The surrounding area is fields the roads are typically rural France, Nearest local shops about 10 min drive and supermarket about 20 min.
The owners Anna and Ali are fantastic hosts, warm and welcoming, there if you need them but leave you alone to enjoy your stay if not needed. They should be proud of there little place in paradise and we will definitely be going back. At night (early hours) the sky is fantastic looks like the stars have been splashed across the sky with a paint brush. We were a party of 5, 2 adults and 19,18,&17 and all enjoyed, a chilled relaxing time. there are things to do further afield but we just stayed and enjoyed.
Please don't spoil it!!
Our description of this property (Les Mirabelles), clearly states that there is an open plan staircase with handrail and this, along with details of the stair gate, travel cot, etc., is explained to anyone enquiring who have young children. This was not necessary in the above case as no young children were in the group. Re sun loungers, more are put out if required to ensure ample are available. As our pool is crystal clear, it is very easy to see the depth and the Roman end steps are perfect for parents with young children.
