About Joan Murray

My main criteria is for guests to relax, I create a very easy going atmosphere, but have high standards as far as accommodation is concerned. You are totally private in the cottage and have the enjoyment of the large mature gardens, lawn and pool at all times. It has been likened by guests to renting a complete large villa. I always put in my famous welcome pack, with wine and beer, so little or no shopping is needed when you first arrive. There are wonderful restaurants and cafes in Moncarapacho, and one superb restaurant, Antonio's.

The Eastern Algarve is totally unspoiled, and long may it stay that way. Beaches are unspoilt and even in August, and a 10 minute walk can leave you with the beach to yourself. There are small islands all along our coast (look up the Ria Formosa). These islands are fully equipped for beach fun, but also we have amazing birdlife (including flamingoes). Small and quick ferries take you out to Fuseta, Pedras Del Rei, Tavira and Armona beach.

I just want you to go home with your batteries charged.

Hope to see you,

Joan X

Joan Murray purchased this cottage in 1989

Why Joan Murray chose Moncarapacho

We bought a complete hilltop and built the villa and cottage. It has a panoramic view of the Ocean from Spain to Faro. These sites are no longer available. Not boasting but it is completely unique. It is completely private, not surrounded by other houses. I have automatic gates and a security fence

What makes this cottage unique

Because it is so private, it feels like you are renting a large villa. The swimming pool and terraces have amazing panoramic views of the sea and mountains. Relaxing is everything, however you want to do it. Quiet or loud, it is entirely down to you.

A rare gem 💖

  • 5 of 5

Our week here was a gift from our family, and it was fabulous. The owner Joan has equipped the cottage with everything you may need, including a fridge full of homemade goodies to last at least 2-3 days.

A car is essential but you're not far from the beautiful beaches or countryside of Eastern Algarve and the local town of Moncarapacho is walkable if you're reasonably fit.

The sea views are amazing, the huge bed super comfy, huge pool at a 'therapeutic ' temperature and a good shower with plenty hot water. People return here year after year, so you'll struggle to find availability but it's worth it

Relaxation promise fulfilled.

  • 5 of 5

The promise and expectation of tranquility, relaxation and privacy at Joan’s cottage was fulfilled during nine sun-drenched days on the deck overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. As an un-expected bonus, we could watch the sunrise from our bed.

Other reviews praise Joan’s welcome package. In truth, it is hard to do it justice. We enjoyed the generous and delicious contents of the fridge for several days.

The cottage is a perfect base for relaxation and exploration of the eastern Algarve. The markets in Moncarapacho met all our needs. The kitchen meets all basic requirements and we prepared full breakfasts and suppers the entire stay. What a pleasure to arrive to find the outdoor gas grill on the deck is actually functional and clean.

Joan’s hospitality is a respectful balance of welcoming invitations to socialize but never impose. Although she is living in the big house above the cottage, she never intrudes and all communications are via text or telephone.

Thank you, Joan. You are a wonderful host and we enjoyed being your guest for nine glorious sunny days.

Little gem in the Algarve.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very well located on top of a hill. Stunning views, you can even see the coast line. Beautiful garden to stroll around and a nice pool with a lot of sunbathing area around it. The owner is very welcoming and charming. Although it is a self-catering cottage, there was a nice welcoming package provided. We loved our stay and will definitely come back.

A very special place!

  • 5 of 5

Had a very relaxed and enjoyable week in Casa Alegria, and we thoroughly endorse all the previous glowing reviews, online as well as in her guest book.

It is a very special place, not least because Joan makes it so. You have complete privacy in the cottage, it's very comfortable, peaceful, well equipped; sun loungers, chairs, pool towels, books, Dvds, TV, Wi fi, pots pans, 3 BBQs on the cottage patio, (gas & charcoal) , local information, maps etc etc. I think she has thought of everything, but is on hand if you have any queries.

And yes, that welcome pack!!! Astounding, scrumptious, lip smacking! And when you eaten all that, check out the menu in the information folder....... :))

As others have said, Joan does not intrude at all during your stay, but in the evening, if you fancy a G+T,or wine, and a chat you can join her and the four legged ones, upstairs. We had good fun, good laughs, and good stories! Joan, heres's to you!! Slainte!

Owner's Response: 'What a special Place' what special people you are, how can my 'late life' career be so enjoyable. We had so many laughs, and you Caroline were a match for Jay! Ann and I were more subdued (well sometimes). You will definitely be back next year...what a tonic you both are. You actually saw some of the ALGARVE, by 'shank's pony', and using the the local taxi service. Next year you will see more maybe! Until then take great care of yourselves Joan

Oasis of Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

This property is in the most idyllic area of Eastern Algarve. Situated in the hills but only 10minutes drive from the local town, which is completely unspoilt by commercialism. The property itself is very well equipped with everything you need for a very enjoyable stay. The owner is most welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. The welcome pack is the best that my husband and I have had. It provides all the basics so that you don't have to go shopping for provisions on your first day (including loo paper). Obviously as this is self catering at some point you will have to replenish these and other items but there is a local supermarket in the town and other small shops where you can go. This is the place to stay if you need or want complete relaxation. My husband and I work hard all year and this beautiful place gives us the time to recharge our batteries for the year ahead. The Cottage is set within a beautiful landscape with plenty of space to relax, either on the lawn under an umbrella with a book or by the pool with a gin and tonic! Fully air conditioned with a very large bed and peace and quiet. In comparison to other similar properties for the same price this one goes above and beyond and we couldn't believe how inexpensive it was for what we actually got.

I would not hesitate to recommend this beautiful idyll to anyone and can guarantee that once you have stayed there you will want to return. We are - roll on 2018

Owner's Response: What a wonderful review.....and I look forward to your visits every year, you have been coming for many years, and in 2018 you are coming for 3 weeks. My main achievement is to make sure you all go home relaxed, as the majority of you come out amazingly stressed. And to be able to do this without being intrusive. Your welcome pack is pretty good (so I am told) from basics bread/butter/eggs/REAL coffee/tea plus home made goodies such as smoked salmon mousse, chicken liver pate, plus roast chicken etc., I am so looking forward to you coming out in May to celebrate your 60th Birthday, and then again in August.

Our return to paradise - can’t wait to go back.....again and again and again

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth visit to paradise and we have already booked for next year, we just can’t get enough. For us it’s our ideal destination, it’s got everything you could want for a relaxing escape. The views from the villa are very impressive and the gardens are lovely and very well maintained. It’s so peaceful and chilling on an inflatable while floating in the pool is the best way to relax. There are sun beds all around the villa so you can enjoy the sun from any position.

For us, the main reason we return, apart from it being a little piece of paradise, is Joan.

Joan is one of the best people you could wish to meet, she’s charming, funny , charismatic , great story teller, generous and she will do whatever she can to make your stay enjoyable. We are proud to now call her a friend. We will have to mention Jay, who is one of Joan’s friends, hes a very knowledgeable man and we have plenty of interesting discussions and at the end we decide that I’m right ........again.

We really missed Brumus and Effy this year , they were both characters in their own right. However there is now a new edition to the gang and his name is Bear. He is one of the nicest, most pleaseant dogs you could wish to meet, I had to take him out of Jill’s case at least twice because she wanted to take him home. Leapold is still his narky looking self 😀?

If you are planning to visit other places the villa is in an ideal situation and as easy access to all motorways. Driving in Portugal is easy as there is never a lot of traffic, the motorways are virtually empty.

For us this is our perfect holiday destination and I can’t put into words just how beautiful and relaxing this place is but I can guarantee that you will have a lovely time and make life long memories.

Right Joan if that review doesnt get us in the will then nothing will 😀?
