Why Carrie McAllen chose Lotus
We were visiting family in the Gold Country in early 2006 and fell in love with the area. We loved the relaxed vibe and the beautiful foothills and of course the beautiful river. Within a month we accepted the keys to our new home located on 2 acres and on the South Fork of the American River. The wineries, open spaces, wildlife, river recreation, culture and great people are all amenities that we enjoy. It's our home away from home so we are happy to share it when we can't be there ourselves. Every time we go for a visit, we instantly feel all the pressures of the daily grind evaporate and we always return back to the bay area refreshed and relaxed.
What makes this House unique
There are so many great things to do in the historic Gold Country: River Rafting, hiking, biking, eating, wine tasting at many local wineries, buying locally grown organic olive oil and honey, relaxing, reading a good book on the private access river in front of our home, BBQ, spending time with family and friends for the weekend on a hot summer day, gold panning, horseback riding, shopping in Placerville and Auburn for unique gifts and much more.

Great place to spend quality time with family
Thank you for sharing your home; we had a great time and really enjoyed the amenities and atmosphere of the place. We spent quite a bit of time hanging out in the grassy shaded side yard on the hammock, hanging chair and adirondack chairs, enjoying our time together. One of our favorite spots. Two recommendations to consider before renting again: the kitchen refrigerator makes a loud, intermittent grinding sound, and we were not able to open the lockbox upon arrival. Otherwise, it was all good, and we would definitely recommend your home to other folks.
Thanks again, and best regards,
Paradise just a few steps from town
We had a wonderful time at the Barking Spider Ranch! The house was large and there was space for everyone, both inside and out. The layout made it easy to gather as a group but also find places to be alone. The decor was warm and welcoming, we could relax and instantly felt at home, not like we were in a place where it wasn't safe to sit on the furniture. Really appreciated the front lawn, we spent a lot of time hanging out on the cool grass watching our dogs chase each other. At first we were disappointed that the river is actually across the street from the house (didn't see that in the description), but the street (appropriately named Little Rd) is almost never traveled and you don't see it from the house, so it wasn't an issue. We were also surprised to be so close to the bridge and main road, and it took a little time to get used to the traffic sounds morning and evening--but that proximity allowed us to stroll over to the coffee shop every morning, or cross easily to the nice beaches on the other side of the river, so it really turned out to be an advantage. We even got to hear some pretty good live music from the patio of the pizza place across the road! All in all I would absolutely recommend this house to a large family (there were 11 of us in total), especially if they have kids and dogs. Carrie made the whole process so easy, always responding quickly when I had questions and accommodating our last, unexpected guest. And Coloma (or is it Lotus?) is a charming little town. Couldn't be happier with our experience :-)!
Great place, relatively secluded, but not too far away from amenities either, and nice being across the street from the river. Property was very nice to stay in, lots of space and a comfortable place.
Whimsically decorated. Very homey & comfortable. Had everything we needed. Awesome location.
Barking Spider Ranch was charming and had everything we needed
The beds were comfortable, kitchen had everything we needed, the outside was unique and nice places to sit (including the river front)and enjoy the outdoors. We rafted the middle fork of American River with OARS ( 1 minute drive, 5 minute walk). It was nice to relax,BBQ and play cards at BSR after our day of floating. Carrie was quick to reply to my questions. Wish we could have stayed longer. It was a great place to celebrate my husband 60th bday with our kids. Would definetly recommend BSR to others and hope to go back again.
A home away from home on the river with all modern amenities awesome
