About the property

Large 1BR-.5 mile from the beach-Full Kitchen-Quiet A/C in every room-Sleeps 4

This large 700 square foot rental unit called the 'Coconut Corner' is one of the nicest rentals you will find on the Windward side of Oahu — a king size bed, full split A/C in every room and HD TV's in both the bedroom and the living room, a fully upgraded kitchen with fridge, range/oven, mircohood & dishwasher plus a covered patio with a table and chairs with ceiling fans throughout, free parking right out front along with free laundry and WiFi—and it's all offered at a wonderfully affordable price. This large vacation rental is in a quiet residential neighborhood just a half-mile from the access to a beautiful sandy stretch of Kailua Beach. It is close to Kailua Town and a neighborhood shopping center with restaurants, hair/nail, liquor store, coffee shop, bank, gas station and a grocery store all within walking distance.

Kailua is a friendly town of about 38,000 located on the beautiful northeast shore of Oahu. I love Kailua for its many beaches and accessible off-shore islands. The beautiful two-mile stretch of sparkling Kailua Beach and adjoining Lanikai have been rated tops among America’s best beaches. Surf Shorebreak, kayak, swim with the green sea turtles, or sail to one of the secluded offshore islands and maybe spot the whales breech offshore. It does not get any better than this!

It is only a 25-minute scenic drive to the airport, Honolulu, and Waikiki. Nearby sites include Kailua Beach Park, Kailua Farmers Market, Lanikai Pillbox hike, Maunawili Falls, Sea Life Park, Sandy Beach, Waimanamo, Haunauma Bay, and the North Shore.

Kailua town offers many diverse restaurants and shopping locations. There are businesses that offer kayaks, kite surfing, and wind surfing lessons and rentals. There are wonderful hiking trails nearby and waterfalls. We also have a large 2 man kayak if you would like to use it.

Kailua offers a completely different atmosphere from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. Many of our guests enjoy the laid back atmosphere, sense of community, and Aloha Spirit we all share. Also, enjoy making your own meals in the full kitchen, even firing up the stainless gas grill to cook up some special dinners.

This rental is smoke free and we ask that our smoking guests smoke outside only.

About Greg

I'm a husband, father, jack of all trades, coach of all sports and owner/manager of 5 vacation rentals in Hawaii. I was raised in Hawaii from the age of 8 years old after my family moved here from the USA mainland. Hawaii has so much to offer and I hope you get the chance to visit and explore this incredible island.

Greg purchased this house in 1998

Why Greg chose Oahu

My wife and I grew up in Kailua so we know it well. It's so close to the beach, restaurants and grocery stores. The small town feeling and tight community remind us of our younger growing up days. It was so great that we were able to own a home in the beautiful town that we grew up in.

What makes this house unique

The beach is beautiful with it's white sand, friendly people and mostly calm waters. Never really rough, even in the winter when the North Shore surf spots are reaching 25 feet - Kailua bay will stay nice and mellow. A perfect beach for swimming and boogie boarding. There is a small covered patio on the corner, next to the coconut trees, for meals or just for enjoying that morning coffee while watching joggers and dog walker going by.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This was a much needed vacation for our family, and we enjoyed every minute. I'm so glad we decided not to stay in Waikiki. Kailua and Coconut Corner was like home away from home for our boys. Being able to do laundry was a life saver! Thanks for the use of your boogie boards & beach equipment, big help!

P.S. The game cube was a big hit with the boys thanks!

True to description

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Coconut Corner for two weeks in February 2009. The other times we have been to Oahu we have stayed with family in the Kahala area. We have since had two more children and were looking for someplace for all five of us to stay. This was perfect. The description provided is right on. There were no surprises, Greg and Cindy were helpful and kind while providing privacy. Our children, ranging in age from 3 - 8, loved Zippy the cat and still talk about him now. One of the best things about staying in Kailua is that you are forced to explore the island! We took the Pali and/or H3/ Hwy 72 more often than when we stayed closer to Waikiki and never got tired of looking at the scenery. We had a great time, this was the perfect place to stay and introduce our children to Hawaii.

Coconut Corner was a Cute spot!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at CC for 2 nights, at the tail end of our trip to Hawaii. We wanted to spend some time on the north/east side of the island and are so glad that we did. We actually ran into Greg when we first got there, and he let us in, gave us a tour and took us through what was around the neighbourhood. What a guy.

The unit is attached to his home where he lives with his family. His office is attached to one side of the rental unit but other than hearing some voices in the mornings, it was really quiet. It is in a more residential area and you'll need to drive a bit to get to where you're going, but after staying at a resort hotel in Lahaina, I'll take a rental like this any day. The unit has been nicely updated and we have zero complaints about the set-up. Wine opener (albeit a little sticky) was on point, inspired some Christmas gift ideas.

We spent the 1.5 days we were there beaching (Lanikai) and hiking (Pill Box, drove over to Koko, too chicken to do Stairway), shopped at the Foodland that was 15 min away, spent the evenings eating on the little patio outside and watching movies (great channel selection when you're too pooped to do anything else). There are also a pair of lazboy recliners that will make your trip. Air conditioners were also a god-send, and the house is solar-powered. Definitely recommend for couples or families looking for a low-key, low-maintenance stay, that plan on doing a lot of activities during the day but want to come back to a comfortable place to stay at night.

Cozy Suburban Location for Two

  • 4 of 5

Location is set in a nice suburban setting. Accommodations were very roomy for two. We like to walk and had no problem walking to the beach or the grocery store. We enjoyed exploring, shopping and eating in Kailua. Its a nice not overly touristy community. Easy access to Honolulu and rest of island.

Kitchen and living room were very nice. Unfortunately we were there for only 3 nights and were busy seeing the sights and didn't get to spend much time in the unit. The unit is attached to the owners house, but nicely separated entrances. Outdoor patio was nice to sit and relax with view of nearby hills. Owner allowed us access to their garage for access to washing machine/dryer and beach equipment. Parking spot was a little wonky and kitchen supplies could use an update.

Recommend to anyone looking for a cozy ample accommodations in Kailua for two and aren't looking to be on the beach.

Perfect spot

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at Coconut Corner for 10 days for vacation during the 4th of July weekend. The house had everything we needed and in close proximity to the beach. The cottage was in great condition and even had full use of beach gear in his garage. Thank you for welcoming us to your home, and Maggie too! Definitely will stay again in the future.

Coconut Corner

  • 5 of 5

The coconut corner is an excellent rental in a quiet Kailua neighborhood. My family and I stayed here in July, and were very impressed with the hospitality of Greg and his wife; they provide everything in the rental a vacationing family could possibly need - beach chairs, boogie boards, towels, games, etc. The apartment has one bedroom with a very comfy king bed, and two sleeper futons in the living area. It's a great place to use as a base to explore Oahu since the highway is close, and there is little traffic (you can be anywhere on the island in less than an hour!).

Kailua is a wonderful town, and a place were you can totally relax. We'll be back!

Not much value

  • 3 of 5

The rental was off a main road with easy access to Kailua, North Shore, Waimanalo, and Honolulu. The master bedroom was adequate size with a TV separate from the living room, which also had a TV. The apartment itself never felt cramped for four people. The AC in the master bedroom, and the living room were great, as it does get warm inside. Kailua, and the surrounding areas have amazing beaches. There is plenty to do in Kailua at night to keep you busy for a week. We did appreciate the beach chairs, boogie boards, and towels.

We stayed during the Christmas Break time frame. The cost of our stay approached $300 a night. The first thing we noticed was the master bed. The middle of the bed bulged up, so it felt like we were always rolling downhill, and sleeping on the edge of the bed. There were two futons in the living room One was long enough for an adult, but the other is definitely only appropriate for a young child. Neither “bed” was very comfortable. This particular rental felt like a “business” and money is the bottom line. For example, there was exactly one roll of toilet paper for our 12-night stay. If I pay $300 a night at a hotel I would at least get fresh toilet paper, right? There wasn’t any welcoming coffee, tea, or Hawaiian treats you might get with other rentals. When arriving late at night the last thing I want to do in the morning is get up and drive to Safeway for coffee.

One thing to consider is the location of this rental. It is not even remotely close to the beach. It is in a suburban neighborhood, and with that comes suburban noise. The neighbor’s dog barks constantly. I thought it might stop at some point, but it never really did. There are heating oil trucks, garbage trucks, and you name it vehicles doing all sorts of activity very early in the morning. Granted, that will be almost anywhere you rent in Kailua. The kitchen is very large with updated kitchen appliances. Unless you “love” to cook while on vacation don’t be swayed by this feature. I found it slightly annoying that the renters want you to pay half by credit card, and then half by cash when you arrive. Have you ever traveled with $1800 in your wallet? In addition the deposit had to be paid in cash, but then it was refunded to your credit card 14 days later. Really, 14 days? What can I say? I guess I was underwhelmed with the property. We will move on from Kailua…look for a place with immediate beach access…at a lower price.

Owner's Response: My husband and I were disappointed to read this review as we have worked to make this rental comfortable and a little "home away from home" for our guests. It is obviously not a resort - so there is a completely different experience and you most definitely are in a neighborhood (although I assure you there are no heating oil trucks in our neighborhood!). Most of our guests have loved this residential experience, but others may prefer a hotel, access to a pool, being right on the beach, having spa services and that kind of thing. There is a good place for every travel style. Our rental is extremely well-stocked and I do apologize if our cleaner forgot to leave an extra roll of toilet paper - we usually do stock a spare roll of both toilet paper and paper towels as part of our routine. We also provide much more, everything from extra feminine supplies to band-aids, guide books, maps, pots/pans, dishes, utensils, etc. We have beach gear and even tennis racquets and golf clubs guests can borrow. In the past I tried supplying a welcome fruit basket, but find that everyone has very particular tastes and preferences. For this reason, we instead just have some basic spices, oil and condiments. I just felt bad paying for fresh papaya, mango, pineapple and bananas and then tossing it out after it spoiled when our guests had left. As for payment - we do accept VISA and MasterCard for the entire cost and the security deposit. However, many of our guests prefer to pay in cash to avoid the credit card fee that comes with using a credit card. The security deposit, as a rule, is refunded automatically by VRBO on the 14th day. This only changes if we make a claim of damages - which rarely happens. These particular guests came at a holiday season when only 1 of our household of 4 was home. It was rather quiet - I thought that might be a bonus, but apparently it ended up "feeling like a business" without the hustle and bustle of family around. I think if you do some research you will find Coconut Corner to be a good value - compared to other Kailua rentals and it is only a half-mile to the nearest beach access, about a 10 minute walk. We are sorry it didn't live up to your expectations overall, but glad that you enjoyed the beaches while you were here.
