Great house, great place, great holidays.
We stayed at the house the last 2 weeks of august 2011. We really enjoyed the fact that it was walking distance to the beach, to the shops and to the restaurants. We never had to worry about parking for 2 weeks and this meant we could do whatever/whenever indepedently of each other. And for our group of 2 adults, 2 teenagers and 1 baby; it was perfect.
When we weren't out and about on the beach, the house was really lovely relax in: very homely, well kitted out (loved the outside shower), nicely furnished and put together. It felt like our home for those 2 weeks rather than some souless holiday rental.
As for Lacanau, it is a very sweet and chillded place (particularly when you come from London!).
We would definitely recommend the house and the resort. We really had fantastic holidays!
Extremly refreshing holdidays
We stayed 4 weeks in Villa Magali in summer 2010 and enjoyed every minute in this very well equipped house in Lacanau. The whole equipment of the very well-maintained villa made a very warm impression. Our kids (11 and 13 years old) enjoyed the stay as well very much. Villa magali has a perfect location (beach appr. 300 metres, next supermarket appr. 100 metres, centre of Lacanau appr. 300 metres. Although the house is located so centrally it was very quiet. If we had questions or (minor) problems Elodie and James fixed it immediately. It was very difficult for us to go back to Germany. If possible we wanted to stay the rest of the year in Lacanau and especially in villa magali. We would defintely come back to this wonderful location.
A wonderful house
This was our third stay in Lacanau, and by far the best house - a lovely old villa that has been beautifully refurbished - a home from home. The best bits were the kitchen/living room - lovely and bright, and the patio for barbeques and reading.
We had three teenage children who rated it as one of the best houses we have stayed in (mainly due to the giant TV i suspect!)
Close to the centre, so great to trips out to the beach and in the evening. Some noise at night from rowdy revellers, but it was the first week of August, and it was easily tolerable
May break in Lacanau
Our group of seven (parents, children 8 and 5, twins of 10 months and nanny) loved every minute of our 10-day stint in Lacanau this May half-term break. At Villa Magali, Elodie and James, along with neighbour Fabienne, helped with the practical aspects of our stay: cots were supplied and stair-gates installed; children’s games and babies’ toys were made available. The bedrooms and living area are comfortable and nicely decorated. The verandah at the front garden is a pleasant place to relax while the back garden is spacious and safe for young children. Although the weather can be a bit of a gamble at this time of year the sun shone for most of our stay and we made good use of the barbecue one balmy evening.
Villa Magali was a superb base from which to enjoy the remarkably wide range of outdoor family pursuits that Lacanau has to offer. Our visit was in the resort’s midseason which meant no queues, mild summer temperatures and plenty of space on the huge beach, which is just a 5 minute walk from the Villa. Lacanau is a hallowed spot for expert surfers, but as complete novices we and our older children were able to enjoy the waves both surfing (on our bellies!) and body-boarding. When the wind is up, the beach is great for kite flying – and we watched the kite-surfers admiringly.
The Ascension Day holiday in France brought hordes of long weekenders from Bordeaux, which lent a carnival air to the beachfront – and the beach itself. Breakdancers performed on the seafront while helicopters made roundtrips to the beach and jet-skiers strutted their stuff on the waves. But when Monday came the beach was back to itself – the preserve of hardcore surfers and a few families relaxing on the sand and strolling along the shore.
The cycle hire shops are happy to fit child seats and child carriages for babies, and have bikes of all sizes for older children. We cycled daily during the holiday – the town itself is very cycle friendly with clearly-marked cycle lanes. Beyond the town there are abundant cycle routes in all directions, both up and down the coast and inland toward Lacanau lake. The lake is a gentle contrast to the ocean, sandy in parts but calm and sheltered. On the day we cycled there, it was almost deserted, though on weekends in comes alive as the Bordelais barbecue and play ball games on the beaches while others waterski, wakeboard, windsurf and sail dinghies on the lake.
Truly a wonderful holiday and we weren’t at all ready to leave.
Villa Magali got top marks from all 3 generations of our family - though perhaps for differing reasons. The extremely well equipped kitchen pleased some, the inhouse collection DVDs others. The layout was as expected from the description (NB on the ground floor the bathroom is accessed via one of the bedrooms)and the neighbour who keeps an eye on the property and does the cleaning/linen changing was friendliness itself - even to the extent of providing her son as a surf teacher. The house was well maintained with some nice touches - very different to the usual bland rental property. The Villa's location is excellent - it is a quick walk to the shops (perfectly adequate so no need to fight with the crowds in a hypermarket) and the beach. We got in the habit of going out for a post supper ice cream and then watching the sunset. The busy weekly market is very close to the house - not a good idea to move the car on Wednesday mornings - and it was so nice to be able just pop in and out, especially as not all of our party were keen shoppers. We sampled a few of the restaurants - ranging from pizza joints to something a little more upmarket (bistro des cochons - again very close by). On the activities front, there are several surf schools in Lacanau and 2 of us (ages 47 and 10) had lessons at the school right on the front - everything very well organised. Otherwise, we played tennis at the tennis club (not far from the casino) where you can book by the hour and rent rackets/balls. Well worth visiting is the lake (about 5km away) - 2 of us (ages 10 and 13) had catamaran lesson and so popular with the 13 year old that he did 2 weeks - only 2 hours a day. The other kids were mainly French but ours speaking English/German got along fine. The lake also has sandy beaches and pedalos/canoes/water skiing/wakeboarding. We went to the lake the day we arrived and booked up courses for the following week but there is an internet site for École de Volie Lacanau. Cycling is very popular and there are plenty of places you can rent although we didn't bother.Bordeaux itself is beautiful and certainly worth a visit (about 1.5 hrs drive though there is a regular bus service). We would certainly recommend this property to families though for families with little children the waves on the beach could be a bit too powerful - the lake would be better.
We had a fantastic holiday at this lovely villa and would love to return. The house is clean, comfortable and well equipped. There are lots to do locally both at the beach and the lake. We were two families with children holidaying together and Villa Magali provided the perfect base,
