An exclusive apartment in the heart of Rome, a few hundred metres from the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and all the major archaeological sites as Arch of Costantine, Domus Aurea, Church of Saint Peter in Vincoli (with Michelangelo’s Moses) , the Papal Basilica of the Saint John Lateran, Battistero, Holy Stairs and Sancta Sanctorum, Lateran Palace, Villa Celimontana, Palatino, Circus Maximus, Terme di Caracalla, the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major and more…

The area, one of the oldest and most striking in the old town centre, inserted in a context of archaeological sites, antique shops, theatres, bakeries, supermarkets and local markets, restaurants, wine bars and typical Italian cafés, is ideal for visiting also the rest of the city, on foot or by public transport (metro station about 100 metres far, bus stop about 50 metres far). Many shops, all within a short distance, offer the best food available in the city, high quality local products, vegetables of all kinds, local and exotic fruit, wine, cheese from various Italian regions and freshly baked bread.

The apartment is on the fifth floor of a building with a lift, dating from the 19th century. After a day of hard "tourist life", it is the perfect place to relax and recover energy. It is very peaceful and comfortable and since it does not face the road directly, it is away from the noise of city traffic. About two-hundred metres far there is the beautiful park of Colle Oppio where you can visit the home of the Roman emperor Nero; it is a fascinating archaeological oasis with a unique view of the Colosseum and a peaceful corner where you can stroll along the streets or relax on a bench listening to the birds singing or the sounds of the eternal city, all things that will make separation painful when you leave!

During most of the day, a very attentive and vigilant doorkeeper is on duty in the building to check people entering from his lodge. In addition to the main door, another door in the inner courtyard makes the building very safe and quiet.

The apartment, which has the warmth and spaces of old houses, is furnished with modern furniture and attention to detail and many decorative items such as vases, original paintings, mirrors, designer lamps, etc. Upon entering, a large hall with an ancient library leads to two bedrooms, one of which has a bright and roomy relaxation corner, and to a dining area with kitchen and a bathroom with shower. The kitchen is fully equipped with all the necessary utensils to prepare any meal the guest desires. The apartment is also equipped with every comfort: air conditioning, central heating, flatscreen TV, free H24 wi-fi connection, washing machine, security cellular, safety box, iron with ironing board, hair dryer, bed linen and blankets, bath towels.

A few hundred metres from the apartment stands the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four papal basilicas in Rome. Located on top of the Esquiline Hill, it is the only one to have retained the original early Christian structure albeit enriched by successive additions. It was built by Pope Sixtus III (432-440) who dedicated it to the worship of the Virgin, whose divine maternity had just been recognised by the Council of Ephesus (431). It was built on the ruins of a previous church and widespread tradition has it inspired by the Lady herself appearing in a dream to Pope Liberius and the patrician John and suggesting that the appropriate place would be indicated miraculously.

So when the morning of 5 August, an unusual snowfall whitened the Esquiline Hill, Pope Liberius is said to have tracked the perimeter of the new basilica in the snow and it was then built with funds provided by John. The only mention of this old building is in a passage of Liber Pontificalis that says that Liberius "fecit basilicam nomini suo iuxta Macellum Liviae". However, every year on 5 August, in memory of Our Lady of the Snow, a re-enactment of the "miracle of the snow" takes place; during a moving celebration, a cascade of white petals is thrown down from the dome of the Cappella Paolina.

Wonderful Home Base for Exploring Rome

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five (children aged 9, 16, and 18) stayed here for five days. The apartment was perfect for us. Carla warmly welcomed us to the apartment and shared lots of information with us regarding use of the apartment, public transportation, foods to try, and places to eat. A comfortable cot was added to the second bedroom for our son and everyone slept very well. The kitchen was well stocked. The apartment was clean, modern and functional. The linens and towels were very high quality which was not the case in other apartments we rented in Italy. Best of all, the apartment was centrally located in a very nice neighborhood. There were many restaurants, cafes and produce stores in the area. We walked to the Colosseum and Spanish Steps and the train, buses and Metro were all easily accessible. Holy Stairs was really a great home base for exploring Rome. Rodolfo and Carla were responsive and helpful hosts. Rodolfo's emails were prompt, informative and helpful. Carla was so friendly and warm. We traveled lightly so we needed to use the washer. It broke during our first load of clothes and Carla came to the apartment straight from work, checked it out, and arranged for a repair person for the very next morning. We really appreciated how she helped us with this. We would highly recommend Holy Stairs to everyone and hope we have an opportunity to return someday!

Absolute PERFECT place to stay to experience ALL of Rome!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this apartment in JUNE 2014 (sorry I didn't write before now). I made all the travel arrangements myself for this, our first trip to Europe, and am not experienced at any of this. This apartment was PERFECT. Clean, comfortable, beautiful, modern, simple ... did I say clean and comfortable already? The air conditioning was ice cold if we wanted it to be (it was quite hot and humid!), or we could turn it off and open the windows. Just off the main attraction area by one block, we could easily walk to the Coliseum or to the M station to get anywhere else. Super easy, even for the novice traveler. There is a small clothes washer. We were able to make our own meals if we chose to, and the fresh produce stands are everywhere! Too bad that would never fly in the US, what with all the regulations and such. There are a host of small businesses and grocery so you will have everything that you need! I ~loved~ staying at this apartment and would do so again! I felt like I was living in Rome. I only wish it were bigger so I could bring more family and friends. Very friendly host/hostess, we didn't need to contact them for anything. I highly recommend this property for your stay in Rome. Can't wait to go back!!

Great location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our little home in Rome. It was perfect for us, three older women who snore. A hassock made into a comfortable bed for one of us to sleep in the little sitting room and the other two each had a bedroom. The large bedroom with sofa gave us a nice place to sip our wine at days end. The kitchen was well equipped to cook in the evening when we were too tired to go out, but there were many restaurants nearby. Also near was a large supermarket with everything you could want. Carla was very helpful giving us good information about the area, restaurants, shops and transportation. The Metro is a short walk and buses to anywhere are nearby. It is on a busy street. This means anything you want is nearby. With the windows open you are part of the vibe of the city. But the windows completely block out the noise when shut. The whole place is very light and airy. We used the washing machine and dryer rack and that was very appreciated as we had packed light. We called about a small issue of not knowing how to open the kitchen window and Carla was there in a jiffy. It was so simple we hated to have bothered her. I would definitely recommend this apartment and Carla and Rodolfo to anyone visiting Rome and would love to stay again in the future.

THE BEST LOCATION!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 7 excellent days in Rome and absolutely loved the “Holy Stairs” apartment! There were 4 of us here, including 2 teen-aged daughters and everything was perfect. The heating was very much appreciated after the cold December days. We also found the washing machine very handy. Carla it was so nice to meet you! Thank you so much for everything including the instruction upon our arrival. The apartment is in a great location and met all our needs. We will suggest this location to all our friends. Thank you again Carla and Rodolfo!

Thank you for providing us with such a fantastic apartment to call home as we visited this amazing city! We enjoyed having such a large, beautiful apartment so close to the historical sites of Roma! Carla it was so nice to meet you. You are a very sweet, warm woman. We would love to return not only to Rome, but to this apartment next time we are in Italy and hopefully that will be soon.

AMAZING APARTMENT - GOOD LOCATION

  • 5 of 5

The Holy Stairs apartment was perfect for our holiday in Rome! As soon as we arrived, and were met at the door by Maria Carla, we were happy with our decision to stay here, she was so nice and welcoming! The apartment was perfectly located close to the Colosseum , the Roman Forum, Arch of Costantine, Palatino, Circus Maximus, etc. We walked everywhere. Safe area with a lot of restaurant all around, groceries, superb “gelaterie” next door. Metro 5 minutes away, bus stop in front of the apartment and most important the apartment was exceptionally clean, nicely decorated, very comfortable beds. Absolutely loved our stay, thank you so much for the fantastic accommodation. We threw a coin in Trevi fountain the so we might see you again soon! Thanks again. Grazie Maria Carla!
