About Jane and Dick Staudt
Jane and Dick are a retired couple whose permanent home is in Vermont. They spend two months in our Caribbean Paradise to breakup the long Vermont winters. Jane is a former nurse, while Dick has degrees in engineering and education. Together they have owned and managed two racquet and health clubs in Vermont for over 25 years. Dick is a avid University of Michigan sports fan.
Jane and Dick Staudt purchased this Condo in 1972
Why Jane and Dick Staudt chose Estate Golden Rock
We chose Sugar Beach for our home away from home because it is sited directly on the beach with the wonderful views from the gallery. There is also a great free-form pool with lots of lounge chairs when you would like a break from the beach. We are within a 10 minute drive or bus ride from down town Christiansted, with its unique 18th century, yellow brick buildings, constructed from the bricks brought over from Denmark as ballast in the sailing ships.
What makes this Condo unique
Our condo is located on the third floor, but has only three one half flights of stairs, due to the siting of the building. Our big advantage is the wonderful view from high up, so that we occasionally see St. Thomas and Tortolla on a clear day, the cooling sea breeze that is better the higher up one is, and the cathedral ceilings which give a feeling of openess. Because the cooling breezes enter the condo from the gallery, and exit through the sliders in the bed room, we have never had to use the central air conditioning. We have decided to go organic, and have fitted all of our beds with new organic sheets, and now provide bathroom amenities (shampoo, conditioner, soaps and lotion) with Paya organics, made with organic papaya, sweet orange and lavender.

Great spot for a quite, comfortable beach vacation getaway :)
With the exception of Google maps being all out of sorts on the address, this was a very convenient location for a beach stay. Almost equidistant from the east and west ends of the island it was always a fun and reasonably quick drive anywhere you need to get to.
The beach is right there. While we didn't a chance to snorkel all the way out to the deep area of the bay in front of the unit, we had plenty of trips into the water and explored the island extensively.
We went in early June, so there weren't that many other guests in the other units, but there were enough to avoid a feeling of being isolated. A good balance.
Being a beach-side location, there was a small problem with ants. We kept all the food (and some trash/waste) in the refrigerator until it was time to toss it in the dumpster. For items we didn't keep in the refrigerator we moved the trash bin onto the stairs (since we wern't using the loft it wasn't an issue). This kept the little guys away.
Like is noted in the description, no AC needed - just leave the bedroom door open and open the screened door and nature will do the rest for you!
The management office hours are not great. I think over the time we were there they were only open 10A-2P, not the 9A-6P documented. Not a big issue, but it did impact a few minor things (getting laundry detergent, etc.).
Great little spot - Enjoy!
Hi Nicholas, Many thanks for your review. Being the tropics, there always seem to be a few bugs around. However, we have changed managers and cleaning help since your visit, and they are much more responsive to the ant issue, and think that future guests would not find them a problem.
Also with our new manager, we no longer rely on the Sugar Beach office for support, so their erratic office hours are no longer a problem. Also, we have stated furnishing laundry detergent.
Your review has been helpful in pointing out problems, and, I believe, we have addressed them successfully. Dick
St. Croix for a week
Dick & Jane's place was very nice with a gorgeous view of Sugar Beach and the 2nd longest reef in the Caribbean.
There was a mix-up that had another family staying in their place for the first day, so it took some emailing, searching for the security guard and calls to the property manager to get it straightened out. Dick was very helpful, but he was in Germany at the time.
Note that not once did we find the Office to be open during the week we were there. You have to figure out who works there and ask them for help.
Hello Fred, Just wanted to apologize again for the mix up in arrival dates. For the first time in 7 years of renting our condo, scheduling through both VRBO and Airbnb calendars, there was an over lap of one day. We arranged a condo next door for you for that day, and gave a generous refund for the inconvenience.
Just for information, but we have a new manager, so no longer are dependent on the office for support. Best wishes, Dick
Sugar Beach is located a 10 minute drive or bus ride from Christiansted, a 1700's Danish town built with yellow bricks that were brought from Denmark as ballast in the sailing ships. The down town sidewalks are all colonnaded, which adds to the charm. The town faced its harbor, and wooden board walk, which is a must for any visitor. Sit in one of the sea side restaurants and enjoy the view of the harbor and the parade along the board walk. The retail are is composed of small, boutique shops, specializing in hand crafted jewelry and unique clothing.
