THIS FAMOUS PROPERTY has appeared on many television shows, featured in international travel publications, and leased by world-renown celebrities. Here is a retreat with a beauty and atmosphere unmatched anywhere on the island; an irreplaceable sanctuary to soothe the soul and experience Old Hawaii Living at its best.
HIDDEN ALONG THE SUNNY SHORES OF KAPOHO BEACH, Shangri-La's four enchanting Bali cottages rest on your own PRIVATE, CRYSTAL CLEAR BATHING LAGOON. Beneath lush coconut and tropical palms, THE HEALING WATERS AVERAGE 90º year-round and are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or therapeutic bathing. There are also HUNDREDS OF TROPICAL FISH at your doorstep to entertain you and plenty of space to swim through the most magical 90º waters.
JUST OUTSIDE THE VOLCANIC ROCK WALLS SURROUNDING THE ESTATE, you can SNORKEL WITH SEA TURTLES in one of the Pacific's richest and most protected wildlife preserves. Along the coast road, also known as "the red road" are numerous warm ponds, black sands beaches, local hawaii pohiki, mermaid ponds under mango canopies and hardened lava walks in Kaimu to the ocean. Or, take a 15-minute drive to historic old Pahoa and sample some of the island's most eclectic boutique shops and restaurants.
This Vacation Rental is a Classic, Rustic example of the "Old Hawaii" tradition most of our guests are looking for. Since the average temperature day and night is 75º, air conditioning is unnecessary and MOSQUITOES ARE RARE! However, if you are seeking a sterile, nature-free, less adventurous or ultra-luxurious environment, you might prefer the Four Seasons in Kona or one of the hi-rise hotels in Hilo. This property is for hearty, healthy guests that enjoy living next to nature and wish to experience the rustic, "Old Hawaii" lifestyle.
The Shangri-La Compound is a collection of unique Bali-Style Structures:
ROUND HOUSE: A 700-square-foot Bali-style structure for yoga, meditation, exercise, massage, meetings, entertaining, or just relaxing in front of the TV. There is also a full-size sleeper-sofa bed, a massage chair and plenty of comfy sofa chairs as well as a desk with Wi-Fi for your laptop, (if you must). A wonderful "family" room.
THE PAVILION: A fully stocked kitchen with all you need to cook a meal, blend a smoothie or start the morning off with coffee or tea. Microwave, gas stove, full size refrigerator/freezer with inside and outside dining tables. Two Estate Bedrooms with king size beds, sliding door mirror closets and 2 bathrooms. The larger bath is outdoor tropical-style with a sunken Japanese Jacuzzi tub for 2, Sauna for 2 and an amazing outdoor shower beneath the Orchids. The laundryroom comes fully equipped with detergent and softener, first-aid needs, extra lagoon towels, blankets, reef shoes in many sizes and snorkel gear.
THE ISLAND BEDROOM: Open to the tropical breezes, this unique Bali Hut features a FULL SIZE Bed and optional roll down blinds for more privacy. The Island Bedroom sits on its own separate island beneath the stars; an open-air structure with a Bali-style roof and side walls just high enough to lay in bed and take in the beautiful views. This Island bedroom is accessible across a foot-bridge over the lagoon. The closest bathroom for the Island Bedroom is across the foot bridge in the Pavilion.
THE GUEST HOUSE: A one-bedroom Guest House with a FULL SIZE bed. Flat screen tv in case you feel the need to watch a DVD. Wifi as well. There is a walk in closet, a 4 person bamboo square table for poker games and a mini-refrigerator. The best part is an outdoor deck overlooking your Lagoon with plenty of lounging space. The guesthouse bathroom is right outside with a compost toilet and outdoor shower hidden away behind your own lava rock wall.
There is an outdoor shower outside the pavilion that works well when you're straight off the beach and a bathroom with sink and toilet as well.
Base rate of $650 per night for FOUR adults. $50.00 per additional person per night. 8 Guests Maximum. THIS PLACE IS YOUR OWN AMAZING, PRIVATE RETREAT IN PARADISE AND YOU WILL BE BLOWN AWAY!
The owner of Shangri-La is a retired college professor of architecture. He bought this Balinese compound with its own private lagoon in 2006 and has been a wonderful steward of this very special place.
Steve M. purchased this estate in 2006
This Vacation Rental was voted #9 IN THE WORLD by Islands Magazine for Private Vacation Estates. Looking at the pictures again after being back in Colorado really stirs great memories. It was just my husband and myself and we wanted peace and solitude. We didn't spend much time away from the home, we ignored almost every tourist attraction as we were in paradise and never wanted to leave. The linens were very nice, we loved the outdoor shower and bath, and the landscaping... We can't say enough about the landscaping. We enjoyed all the details including the small shells in the walking paths and the orchids wrapping our linens on arrival. We loved the nightly rains and all the humidity. My skin never felt so nice. We loved the outdoor lighting at night and enjoyed watching the palm fronds wave in the breezes. We also loved the orchids growing on the trees. The flowers were amazing.
The pond was delightful for swimming and we grew to love the fish and the geckos. It was slightly inconvenient that our Verizon cell service didn't work at the home and yet, what a gift! By the time we left, we could care less that we had no cell service! It took Shangri-la to remind us that constant connection isn't THAT necessary and that we are humans and do not need our dog leashes (cell phones) on every adventure. Sometimes it is best to run free!
Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs
We planned this vacation after finding Shangri'La on VRBO and speaking with the owner, Steve. The pictures and write up of the property are accurate. The property felt bigger than we were expecting. This was our 20th Anniversary spent with our 3 children; fraternal twin 12 year olds and our 14 year old daughter. Everything was perfect and in excellent working order. Shawn, the caretaker, met us at the gate and gave us an unrushed tour of the entire property plus made sure we understood how to operate anything that might not be obvious to a visitor. Our children were immediately in love with the lagoon and couldn't wait to go snorkeling with the beautiful assortment of fish. Snorkeling at night with the blue underwater lights was amazing for all of us. The children took turns sleeping in the island bedroom and we claimed the master bedroom in the rear of the property. We felt very safe and enjoyed the privacy that the high bamboo fence surrounding the property provides. Eating outdoors was fun for all of us under the covered space between the main house and the round house. Shawn was kind enough to offer to take us to Wai Opae for a snorkel adventure and found the number one thing we wanted to see; a beautiful green sea turtle that swam around all of us. We took many wonderful underwater photos and video with a Go-Pro camera. Shawn is a treasure of information and always responded quickly when I called him to ask questions. Don't hesitate to ask if he is available for a tour and you will be happy spending time with him. Well spoken, traveled and pleasant demeanor. I highly recommend Shangri'La for families with children who are good swimmers. The water was a comfortable 90 degrees day and night. Kaleo's was our favorite restaurant in Pahoa, Volcano Restaurant at Kilauea had great food but poor service, Ocean Sushi in Hilo - Awesome, skip Paulo's Bistro - overpriced and limited menu. No mosquitos seen and no dangerous insects. LOTs of Geckos, harmless and fun to catch if you bring a net. Prepare for the Coqui frogs singing to you for an hour or so after dark. We will always treasure our family time at Shangri'La!!! Great memories!!!
Stephenson Family - Anchorage, Alaska
Great property in a secluded community. On site property manager (Shawn) was great, very helpful and accommodating. Our kids loved the snorkelling lagoon! Sleeping arrangements worked out well for our family of 4. Our kids really enjoyed the island bedroom, but it might be a little tight if you tried to double up (2 of 4 bedrooms only had double beds). I had to deduct at least one star as I had prearranged for an early check-in which was later withdrawn when the owner booked a party through the day of our arrival. Disappointment turned to aggravation when, due to the clean-up necessitated by the excessively large (11 people) group booked before us and the late (almost 2 hours) arrival of the cleaning lady, our we couldn't check in until 6pm. Once we got past the check-in headaches we had a great time. Highly recommended is Kehena Beach, a picturesque crescent of black sand 30 minutes south. We were lucky enough to see and swim with a pod of spinner dolphins for at least 30 minutes. On Shawn's recommendation, we booked dinner at Volcano House at dusk and had a great view of the lava in the Halemaumau Crater from our table.
Really nice property - peaceful and relaxing with a private Lagoon! While it's away from the touristy side of the big island, I found the area to be preferred in comparison to Kona. Location is easiest with a rental car - but it is a good distance from other site-seeing adventures!
We had a wonderful relaxing time at the Shangri'La. The accommodations were excellent and the 4 of us enjoyed the spacious housing.
The grounds were just lovely and the lagoon an extra delight. We enjoyed snorkeling at the house and surrounding areas. There were
plenty of attractions to see near by which we took advantage of.
If we ever get a chance we will certainly stay there again.
Uncle Roberts Farmers Market was amazing and we are glad we made it to the event.
The property manager was very helpful and did his job well which only added to the nice stay we had.
What an amazing spot! Swim with the fish in the pond, sleep on an island. We had an amazing time! All the amenities you need and walk to the champagne ponds, not that you need to with your own snorkeling sanctuary in your back yard.
Just a beautiful setting, with a very accommodating manager.
We throughly enjoyed our (all too short) time at Shangri-La! So private & peaceful! The property is gorgeous (the photos on the listing do not do it justice). My favorite part was swimming in the lagoon - it was like swimming in your own private aquarium. The property's team did a marvelous job of making sure we had directions, were setup, and even called to check on us when there was a tsunami watch! Thank you for an awesome visit! We will definitely be back! Aloha & A hui ho!
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (a World Heritage Site), Sea Turtle and Dolphin Encounters, Botanical Gardens, Hawaiian Cultural Events & Festivals, Many State and National, Stargazing at Mauna Kea Observatory, Whale Watching, Helicopter Tours, Scuba Diving, AND Skiing (that’s right, skiing!)
Why is this area of Hawaii the only location that has 90-degree ocean water? A: This is the most unique place to swim in the island because of the 90-degree volcanically heated waters. Many arrive for its health benefits and use them as ‘hot ponds’ while the salt water seems to cleanse the skin and heal aching muscles. This is made possible because of our active volcano that has been flowing into the ocean for nearly 3 decades. While Kapoho and the gates of Shangri’La are about 25 miles from this active flow, because the lava rock is so pores, this creates natural steam vents, and these vents travel that far and heat only this area of Hawaii. For those of you used to the cold temperatures of the Pacific or Atlantic and rarely go swimming, you may find that in Kapoho, once you put on a snorkel, mask and fins, it’s hard to want to get out!
Where are the best beaches? A: Natty’s Caviar Beach is a nice walk from Shangri’La. The only green sand beach in the world is at south point of the big island, and our concierge offers full day tours to this beach for an affordable rate to parties up to 6 to see this remarkable one of a kind beach. White sand beaches are located on the Kona side (Hapuna is most popular), and the favorite Black sand beach is located on the way to the green sand beach from Shangri’La. Also, all of the resort beaches on the Kona side (near Kohala and Waikoloa) all have public access, and the 2 favorites are located at Mauna Kea Resort, and in Waikoloa at the Marriott.
Where is the best place to snorkel? A: If you’re staying in Kapoho, you’re there! You have your own private snorkel lagoons in the gates of Shangri’La, and down the street a short walk is Champagne Pond, where there is public access to swim with big sea turtles when they come in to rest from the tide. Also, just outside the gates of Shangri’La you take the 2nd left turn to Vacationland, and you will find enormous coral to view. The only other place on the island for great snorkeling is Kealakekua (Captain Cooks monument), and The Royal Grounds in Captain Cook. However, because of the warmer water on our side in Kapoho, most people prefer the snorkeling there.
Where and when is the best Farmer’s Market? A: Maku’u Farmers market every Sunday between 8 & 1:00. It’s the biggest one in the entire island, and a few miles outside Pahoa on the 130 going towards Hilo. You’ll get live entertainment, great food, and craft booths. There is also a small farmers market down in Kaimu every Wednesday from 5-10pm.
Where can we swim with wild dolphin? A: This is definitely a treat, and if you catch them in the bay at Kahena beach down Hwy 137 (only about 15 minute drive from Shangri’La), you can hike down to the beach and swim with them if you wish to brave the surf. Lot’s of interesting people hang out in Kahena, and they even have mass drumming there on Sundays. This is the absolute best spot to people watch in all the islands! There is also an amazing ecstatic free dance held on Sundays between 10 and 1:00 at the Kahena Inn about a mile from Kahena beach. Drumming usually starts in the afternoon after the ecstatic dance.
Do we need to bring our own Snorkel gear? A: If you would like to, feel free. However, snorkel gear and fins are provided at Shangri’La, as well as reef shoes to protect your feet from sharp lava rocks.
Can we order in food or private massage services? A: Yes. We have a private chef on call that can prepare meals for you at Shangri’La, or our Caretaker can deliver food to you for a nominal fee. We also have a man and a woman massage therapist on call that can come to the property for $85 per hour massage. Any other special requests such as a small luau, private hula dancing or lessons, or a day spa brought to you can be arranged through the Caretaker. No request is too big, so it you can dream it, she can arrange it.
Where are the best restaurants? A: The best restaurants are actually in Pahoa (10 minutes from Shangri’La). There’s Kaleo’s (specialty food with full bar), Paolo’s (authentic Italian), Ning’s Thai Food (closed on Mondays), Laquin’s Mexican (full bar), and a couple of great ones in Hilo… Hilo Bay Café, Coconut Grill, or Café Pesto. Note: for Ning’s and Paolo’s, bring your own wine or beer…they have no bar, and charge a small corking fee.
There is also a small farmers market in downtown Hilo.
