THIS FAMOUS PROPERTY has appeared on several television shows, featured in international travel publications, and leased by world-renown celebrities. Here is a Retreat with a Beauty and Atmosphere unmatched anywhere on the island; an Irreplaceable Sanctuary to Soothe the Soul and experience Old Hawaii Living at its Best!
As SHANGRI'LA has been a popular vacation rental for over a decade, we have many repeat visitors and want every guest to have the experience of a lifetime. This is why we offer a 100% REFUND POLICY if you come to the property, don't like what you see and don't check-in. Review our Rental Agreement for details.
HIDDEN ALONG THE SUNNY SHORES OF KAPOHO BEACH, Shangri-La's four enchanting Bali cottages rest on your own PRIVATE, CRYSTAL CLEAR BATHING LAGOON. Beneath lush coconut and tropical palms, THE HEALING WATERS AVERAGE 90º year-round and are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or therapeutic bathing. There are also HUNDREDS OF TROPICAL FISH at your doorstep to entertain you and plenty of space to swim through the most magical 90º waters.
This Vacation Rental is a Classic, Rustic example of the "Old Hawaii" tradition most of our guests are looking for. Since the average temperature day and night is 75º, air conditioning is unnecessary and MOSQUITOES ARE RARE! However, THIS PROPERTY IS FOR HEARTY, HEALTHY GUESTS THAT ENJOY LIVING NEXT TO NATURE AND WISH TO EXPERIENCE THE "OLD HAWAII" OUTDOOR LIFESTYLE. If you are reluctant to use an outdoor bathroom or swim in a Natural Lagoon with Tropical Fish, you should probably book other accommodations.
JUST OUTSIDE THE VOLCANIC ROCK WALLS SURROUNDING THE ESTATE, you can SNORKEL WITH SEA TURTLES in one of the Pacific's richest and most protected wildlife preserves. Along the coast road, also known as "the red road" are numerous warm ponds, black sands beaches, local hawaii pohiki, mermaid ponds under mango canopies and hardened lava walks in Kaimu to the ocean. Or, take a 15-minute drive to historic old Pahoa and sample some of the island's most eclectic boutique shops and restaurants.
The Shangri-La Compound is a collection of unique Bali-Style Structures:
ROUND HOUSE: A 700-square-foot Bali-style structure for yoga, meditation, exercise, massage, meetings, entertaining, or just relaxing in front of the TV. There is also a sleeper-sofa bed, (4ft wide x 7ft long, suitable for one adult), a massage chair and plenty of comfy sofa chairs as well as a desk with Wi-Fi for your laptop, (if you must). A wonderful "family" room.
THE PAVILION: A fully stocked kitchen with all you need to cook a meal, blend a smoothie or start the morning with coffee or tea. Microwave, gas stove, full size refrigerator/freezer with inside and outside dining tables. Two Estate Bedrooms with king size beds, sliding door mirror closets and 2 bathrooms. The larger bath is outdoor tropical-style with a sunken Japanese Jacuzzi tub for 2, Sauna for 2 and an amazing outdoor shower beneath the Orchids. The laundryroom comes fully equipped with detergent, softener, first-aid needs, beach towels, blankets, reef shoes in many sizes and snorkel gear.
THE ISLAND BEDROOM: Open to the tropical breezes, this unique 130 square foot Bali Hut features a FULL SIZE Bed and optional roll down blinds for more privacy. The Island Bedroom sits on its own separate island beneath the stars; an open-air structure with a Bali-style roof and side walls just high enough to lay in bed and take in the beautiful views. This Island bedroom is accessible across a foot-bridge over the lagoon. The closest bathroom for the Island Bedroom is across the foot bridge in the Pavilion. The Island Bedroom is not recommended for continuous overnight occupancy as there is no closet.
THE GUEST HOUSE: A one-bedroom Guest House with a QUEEN SIZE bed. Flat screen tv in case you feel the need to watch a DVD. Wifi as well. There is a walk in closet, a 4 person bamboo table for poker games, microwave and a mini-refrigerator. The best part is an outdoor deck overlooking your Lagoon with plenty of lounging space. The guesthouse bathroom is right outside next to the Waterfall with a compost toilet and outdoor shower hidden away behind your own lava rock wall.
There is an outdoor shower outside the carport that works well when you're straight off the beach and a bathroom with sink and toilet as well.
Base rate is for TWO guests. Depending on the season, there are additional fees per additional person per night. 8 Guests Maximum.
We have discovered that sometimes guests try to squeeze too many people into the property and are then uncomfortable with the sleeping arrangements. We are therefore advising you of the specific details so you will not be disappointed or inconvenienced.
Shangri’La is situated next to its own natural lagoon by the ocean. All of the structures are simple, classic Hawaii style, and open-air with screens and jalousie windows. There is no air conditioning as the temperature is generally about 75 degrees, day and night.
This property is not recommend for elderly persons or anyone physically or medically challenged. The majority of our guests are below the age of 70 and in good physical condition in order to properly enjoy the natural, private lagoon and tropical atmosphere of the property.
Guests that require frequent visits to the bathroom in the middle of the night should utilize the two king bedrooms in the pavilion as they have adjacent, private bathrooms. The private master bath has a sauna and a Japanese Jacuzzi tub as well as a sink, toilet and shower. The second private bathroom is next to the second king bedroom and has a toilet, sink, and shower.
The third bathroom near the garage is open-air with a private toilet, sink, and outdoor shower. The shower is not private and is typically used to rinse off after bathing in the lagoon.
The fourth bathroom (near the guesthouse) is outdoors and about a twenty-foot walk from the front door of the guesthouse. It contains an outdoor private shower and a private, composting toilet. There is no sink.
The sofa-bed in the large round room is 4 feet wide by 7 feet long. It works well for one person and is very comfortable. It is too small for two adults.
The Gazebo island bed is a full size bed. However, the 130 square-foot hut is open-air, has no closet, and is not recommended for stays beyond a couple of consecutive nights. It has been described as a “honeymooners” bed.
We do not provide expensive china as when broken, pieces fall into the lagoon and become a hazard. All plates and glasses are therefore high-quality plastic. There is no dishwasher but the Lanai kitchen has plenty of stainless steel utensils, pots, pans and condiments.
Shangri’La is a quiet, rustic and historic tropical delight that offers very comfortable furnishings. If you are seeking complete luxury or more sterile accommodations on the island, we recommend the Four Seasons in Kona. The half-acre Shangri’La estate rents for less than a single, 600 square-foot room at the Four Seasons or a one-bedroom cottage in Kona.
In summary, Shangri-La is located in a tropical, natural, beautiful and open-air environment. If this is not what you are seeking, you should book alternative accommodations.

Eat, Snorkel, Lounge, and Relax in beautiful Kapoho
We planned this vacation after finding Shangri'La on VRBO and speaking with the owner, Steve. The pictures and write up of the property are accurate. The property felt bigger than we were expecting. This was our 20th Anniversary spent with our 3 children; fraternal twin 12 year olds and our 14 year old daughter. Everything was perfect and in excellent working order. Shawn, the caretaker, met us at the gate and gave us an unrushed tour of the entire property plus made sure we understood how to operate anything that might not be obvious to a visitor. Our children were immediately in love with the lagoon and couldn't wait to go snorkeling with the beautiful assortment of fish. Snorkeling at night with the blue underwater lights was amazing for all of us. The children took turns sleeping in the island bedroom and we claimed the master bedroom in the rear of the property. We felt very safe and enjoyed the privacy that the high bamboo fence surrounding the property provides. Eating outdoors was fun for all of us under the covered space between the main house and the round house. Shawn was kind enough to offer to take us to Wai Opae for a snorkel adventure and found the number one thing we wanted to see; a beautiful green sea turtle that swam around all of us. We took many wonderful underwater photos and video with a Go-Pro camera. Shawn is a treasure of information and always responded quickly when I called him to ask questions. Don't hesitate to ask if he is available for a tour and you will be happy spending time with him. Well spoken, traveled and pleasant demeanor. I highly recommend Shangri'La for families with children who are good swimmers. The water was a comfortable 90 degrees day and night. Kaleo's was our favorite restaurant in Pahoa, Volcano Restaurant at Kilauea had great food but poor service, Ocean Sushi in Hilo - Awesome, skip Paulo's Bistro - overpriced and limited menu. No mosquitos seen and no dangerous insects. LOTs of Geckos, harmless and fun to catch if you bring a net. Prepare for the Coqui frogs singing to you for an hour or so after dark. We will always treasure our family time at Shangri'La!!! Great memories!!!

You guys are awesome! Thanks so much for your review. It REALLY made my day. I hope you can come back and visit Shangri'La again soon. The fish will be waiting for you... only bigger! Thanks again.
Adveture of a Lifetime....it was Para Para Paradise!!!
This was the most unique place we have ever stayed at! I would return to the Big Island just for the Shangri La experience. Outdoor showers, tub, floating in the warm tropical lagoon with drink in hand and my Baby next to me. We stayed for 3 glorious nights and cooked in 2 out of the 3. The two of us had the whole compound to ourselves and vowed to come back with company to share this wonderful tropical island paradise!
I will say it is certainly not for everyone. We were in Maui the week before and is a totally different Hawaiian experience there. We could walk to various activities. Shangri La is remote and intimate. It takes much longer to get to other activities therefore this is a place to go to for its quiet beauty and to get away from the crowds. We loved every minute of it!
Your own tropical lagoon heated by the volcano.
This is our second trip to Shangri La. We have stayed at a number of places on the Big Island and in the Kapoho area and this place is not to be missed! The landscaping and the lagoon are stunning. There is nothing like swimming and snorkeling in the warm waters surrounded by tropical fish and tilapia (which are quite pretty and purple- and very fun to feed). The entire pond (which is huge) is surrounded by coconut palms and flowers. We loved the Bali-style buildings and screened open air kitchen. The open air bathroom at the end with the flower and fern wall was an experience in itself! We loved showering outdoors after swimming in the lagoon. We spent all of our time outside- even in the rain, enjoying our truly magical surroundings. The entire property is private, and had lots of space for our group to be together or spend quiet time alone. We also enjoyed Champage Pond (not to be missed) and swimming in the ocean-access outlets in the neighbourhood. Shangri La is a breathtaking, one-of-a-kind experience of the natural, lush beauty of Hawai’i. Mahalo, Steve and Maiva for having us as your guests. We can’t express how much we loved staying at your property! We will be back!
Dear Iantha, Thank you so much for staying with us and your review! We want all our guests to have a fantastic experience and sharing yours is greatly appreciated. Please come back soon! The fish will still be there, but with babies!
Extremely tranquil... truly living in paradise
This home is really something from a movie. You just never get tired of having your very own tropical oasis, the lagoon with your own beautiful fish! It was very hard to leave. A few upgrades in the kitchen would be appreciated, pots, bowls etc. Otherwise hard to find and negatives!
Rustic luxury in a tropical paradise
We spent 4 days at Shangri'La with another couple and it was as wonderful as the description said it would be. You have space to spread out and enjoy time to yourself or sit down as a group for dinner or games. The fish in the lagoon are entertaining whether you choose to swim with them or just watch them from the deck or the bridge. The water is incredibly warm and clear. While there are tons of things to go see in the area, beware - Shangri'La may just weave such a web of contentment that you won't want to leave the gates and rejoin the real world...
Thank you Maureen for your insightful review. I love this property and want every guest to experience the unique environment that you expressed. Please come back. We loved having you and the fish will miss you!
Very special place! My life batteries are now re-charged!
Amazing place to be at and just relax. I def would not hate it to go back and if you have kids they will love it!
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (a World Heritage Site), Sea Turtle and Dolphin Encounters, Botanical Gardens, Hawaiian Cultural Events & Festivals, Many State and National, Stargazing at Mauna Kea Observatory, Whale Watching, Helicopter Tours, Scuba Diving, AND Skiing (that’s right, skiing!) Why is this area of Hawaii the only location that has 90-degree ocean water? A: This is the most unique place to swim in the island because of the 90-degree volcanically heated waters. Many arrive for its health benefits and use them as ‘hot ponds’ while the salt water seems to cleanse the skin and heal aching muscles. This is made possible because of our active volcano that has been flowing into the ocean for nearly 3 decades. While Kapoho and the gates of Shangri’La are about 25 miles from this active flow, because the lava rock is so pores, this creates natural steam vents, and these vents travel that far and heat only this area of Hawaii. For those of you used to the cold temperatures of the Pacific or Atlantic and rarely go swimming, you may find that in Kapoho, once you put on a snorkel, mask and fins, it’s hard to want to get out! Where are the best beaches? A: Natty’s Caviar Beach is a nice walk from Shangri’La. The only green sand beach in the world is at south point of the big island, and our concierge offers full day tours to this beach for an affordable rate to parties up to 6 to see this remarkable one of a kind beach. White sand beaches are located on the Kona side (Hapuna is most popular), and the favorite Black sand beach is located on the way to the green sand beach from Shangri’La. Also, all of the resort beaches on the Kona side (near Kohala and Waikoloa) all have public access, and the 2 favorites are located at Mauna Kea Resort, and in Waikoloa at the Marriott. Where is the best place to snorkel? A: If you’re staying in Kapoho, you’re there! You have your own private snorkel lagoons in the gates of Shangri’La, and down the street a short walk is Champagne Pond, where there is public access to swim with big sea turtles when they come in to rest from the tide. Also, just outside the gates of Shangri’La you take the 2nd left turn to Vacationland, and you will find enormous coral to view. The only other place on the island for great snorkeling is Kealakekua (Captain Cooks monument), and The Royal Grounds in Captain Cook. However, because of the warmer water on our side in Kapoho, most people prefer the snorkeling there. Where and when is the best Farmer’s Market? A: Maku’u Farmers market every Sunday between 8 & 1:00. It’s the biggest one in the entire island, and a few miles outside Pahoa on the 130 going towards Hilo. You’ll get live entertainment, great food, and craft booths. There is also a small farmers market down in Kaimu every Wednesday from 5-10pm. Where can we swim with wild dolphin? A: This is definitely a treat, and if you catch them in the bay at Kahena beach down Hwy 137 (only about 15 minute drive from Shangri’La), you can hike down to the beach and swim with them if you wish to brave the surf. Lot’s of interesting people hang out in Kahena, and they even have mass drumming there on Sundays. This is the absolute best spot to people watch in all the islands! There is also an amazing ecstatic free dance held on Sundays between 10 and 1:00 at the Kahena Inn about a mile from Kahena beach. Drumming usually starts in the afternoon after the ecstatic dance. Do we need to bring our own Snorkel gear? A: If you would like to, feel free. However, snorkel gear and fins are provided at Shangri’La, as well as reef shoes to protect your feet from sharp lava rocks. Can we order in food or private massage services? A: Yes. We have a private chef on call that can prepare meals for you at Shangri’La, or our Caretaker can deliver food to you for a nominal fee. We also have a man and a woman massage therapist on call that can come to the property for $85 per hour massage. Any other special requests such as a small luau, private hula dancing or lessons, or a day spa brought to you can be arranged through the Caretaker. No request is too big, so it you can dream it, she can arrange it. Where are the best restaurants? A: The best restaurants are actually in Pahoa (10 minutes from Shangri’La). There’s Kaleo’s (specialty food with full bar), Paolo’s (authentic Italian), Ning’s Thai Food (closed on Mondays), Laquin’s Mexican (full bar), and a couple of great ones in Hilo… Hilo Bay Café, Coconut Grill, or Café Pesto. Note: for Ning’s and Paolo’s, bring your own wine or beer…they have no bar, and charge a small corking fee. There is also a small farmers market in downtown Hilo.
