Great house for a family and friends getaway to celebrate my 60th Birthday. Loads space for everyone and great location. Everything you need.
A fantastic stylish large house
Just returned from a brilliant walking weekend at the Cleeve with 7 other women and everyone was amazed at just how great this house is! It's perched on a wooded hillside above the lovely village of Porlock, has great views and is only 5 minutes walk to the centre of the village. It's such a tranquil and beautiful spot to stay and right behind the house is a footpath directly leading to Exmoor (deer are frequently seen in the garden, although we weren't lucky this time!) . The house overlooks a recreation field and so it would also be great for kids to come here, with a playground and also tennis courts/football, etc. (plus the Cleeve grounds would be fantastic to explore)
The house itself is very stylishly decorated (I wish my house looked like this!) - everything is very tasteful and coordinating. It is also equipped so well, you'll never run out of anything, even at full capacity. We were amazed at the amount of crockery, cutlery and glasses! Plus there's an industrial dishwasher which makes washing it all very easy (only takes a few minutes each cycle!)
We only had 8 in the house and so were very spoilt with a bedroom each and a choice of sitting room every evening! However, I have stayed previously with 25 of us and even then it never felt crowded. I think there are 6 bathrooms/shower rooms (some ensuite) and 7 loos (all newly fitted) and so we never had to queue and there was a plentiful supply of hot water.
Each sitting room had a large flat screen TV and dvd etc and there was also a play station in one of the sitting rooms, so this would be good for the kids!
Everyone in my party commented on the beds which were extremely comfortable, with high quality pillows and duvets and lovely fresh white bed linen.
There's lots to do in this area: whilst we were there we did 2 great circular walks - one up to Dunkery Beacon (we saw Exmoor ponies and red deer) and one from the house to Porlock Weir and then onto Culbourne Church. This is an incredibly beautiful and unspoilt area and we found that the paths weren't at all busy (last year we went to the Peak District which was very crowded!). We also enjoyed a visit to the pictureseque National Trust village of Selworthy and had a cream tea in the cafe there!
I'll highly recommend this house and will definitely be back and many of my friends (none of whom had visited before) were also planning to arrange family get togethers at the Cleeve!
Thank you so much for the fantastic and detailed review. It is such a pleasure to know that people enjoy staying at The Cleeve as much as we do.
Spectacular comfortable house, setting to die for, with great walks, pubs and restaurants really are just a few minutes walk away.
Hi there! Thank you so much for your kind comments, we do try to keep folks happy!
Party House Extraordinaire
We never would have thought of Porlock, but will be back.. My large extended family took over the Cleeve for Christmas and we could not have had a better time - OK snow and sunny weather made it perfect, but the house itself was the heart of it - brand new en suite bathrooms in almost every bedroom, massive Aga, 2 kitchens a huge dining room - and the location - walking out of the garden up through the woods to Exmoor, or down to the coast at Porlock Weir ...(or.. into the village to the pub)... just brilliant. There are loads of great longer walks and fantastic pubs up on the moor that you can do with a short drive... (or bike - I am determined to be back some time in the summer with cycling mates).. When we arrived the house was warm and spotlessly clean with masses of hot water and plenty of towels.. Plus we had Red Deer and Woodcock in the garden, not things we normally see at home...With 17 people inc. the kids, was never crowded, so I would definitely recommend it for big parties.
Thank you for your kind comments Matt. It will be great to see you again next time you come to stay at The Cleeve.
We are not overlooked yet you have all the facilities one could wish for on site or a few minutes' walk away. No more having to drive to restaurants or pubs, you're on holiday, take it easy! All the pleasure but, with The Cleeve's unique secluded position, convenience and privacy come together.
* Exmoor is among the UK's greatest areas of outstanding beauty.
Ideal for all sorts of adventures!
* You can go directly from the huge lawn to a bridleway. Or you could take the winding garden path over our private bridge across the stream and saunter up the quiet country lane deeper into our spectacular setting. You could spend weeks without the need to drive anywhere to start and end your treks.
* There are 3 pubs, one dating back to the 12th century, several restaurants and plenty of shops for everyday needs. We've stayed in places where facilities like this are miles away but when you're on holiday you just want things to be convenient and, at The Cleeve, they are.
* Enjoy it all.
Other Activities: Football, cricket, sailing, site seeing.
Golf: There are plenty of golf courses around, with the nearest probably being at Minehead.
