I was born in Costa Rica a few years back. At age 18 I left home and went to California, USA in pursuit of a better education. During the Vietnam War I joined the USMC and serve with the 1st Marines in Vietnam. Upon my return to the USA from overseas I attended California State University in Los Angeles where I studied International Relations. During the 32 years I lived in the Golden State I worked at different things among them play and sang with a Mariachi Band in a night club in Los Angeles, Was Director of Data Processing for a large Insurance group. Toward the end of my self-impose exile in the City of Angels I served as Comercial and Public Relations Attache for the Costa Rica Consulate in Los Angeles, as a Consul of Costa Rica in Los Angeles, and last as Costa Rica Director of Tourism for Western United States and Canada, before retiring to live back in Costa Rica.
Tomas de la Ossa purchased this apartment in 1985
When I returned to Costa Rica to live, I looked to buy a home near the neighborhood where I grew up in San Jose. I found this old and beautiful home in one of the most exclusive neighborhood in San Jose: Barrio Otoya a no more than five or six city blocks barrio, caught between Barrios Aranjuez y Amon. Over the years I have restored the house to its original look.
Its ideal location is perhaps the biggest asset of Casa Don Tomas, in the city but then again surrounded by the greenery of the Simon Bolivar National Park and the National Park that makes you forget you are but a few blocks away from the center of town. Tranquility, calmness, peace and serenity are the four words that best describes the apartment. Common visitors to Casa Don Tomas grounds are: brown tail squirrels, wild parrots, many, many different types of birds and multi color butterflies. Easy access, within walking distance of everything. in San Jose. Privacy and security.
We had a great time in San Jose, and an even better time at the beach. Thank you for all your hospitality (and for having the cleaning lady stop by on Saturday).
You driver Romeo is an excellent driver and a credit to your staff. You should keep him around at any and all cost.
I’d like to visit Costa Rica one more time (probably next year) and I’ll keep your place in mind when I return (if we don’t stay at the beach).
Until next then, be safe and God speed.
I stayed here with two of my colleagues for a 2-month long externship with the Poder Judicial. Tomas was the best host. He made it simple and easy to get to his apartment from the airport and was very responsive whenever anything came up. He also gave us our space but was always accessible. While we stayed we had a few hiccups with the apartment but they were usually fixed within the day if not within a few hours. We got along great and spent a few nights simply conversing with him. The apartment itself is older and the kitchen is small but functional and we made it work btwn the three of us. The neighborhood is usually calm although the train is near by and the neighbors all own more than a few dogs but are usually not a problem during the night but can create a ruckus. The center of town is about 15-minute walk as well as the nearest grocery store. Taxis are always easily accessible by the hospital that is near by. We really enjoyed the cafe around the corner as well. Overall we had a great experience and really lucked out to have such an amazing host. Couldn't have imagined staying in a busier part of the city this was a perfect combination.
I rented the upper Penthouse from Jan. 26/16 to Feb. 24/16 and used it as a central base to explore some of Costa Rica. It is a beautiful home owned by a truly wonderful and caring man who is affectionately known to me and my family as simply "Tomas". A gentleman, full of information and willing to share. The apt is as described and met all the needs of my family. We arrived at 9.00 p.m. in the evening and were met at the airport by Rolando (one of Tomas' drivers) and driven to the penthouse. This is an important benefit as I would not have been able to find Tomas' residence. Socorro kept the apt spotless, a very friendly, quiet lady. I wish I could have spoken some Spanish that would have enabled me to be able to converse with her about her life and homeland. Romero, Tomas' trusted friend and chauffeur for a number of years, drove us back to airport on departure , another proud Costa Rican and a gentleman. My family enjoyed the tours which were undertaken by Rolando and one of his drivers, Jimmy, who became our chauffeur, tour guide, interpreter and sometimes chef but most importantly of all our friend. Personally myself I loved all of Costa Rica but I also enjoyed exploring downtown San Jose, a half hour walk from the penthouse. And the patio at the end of the day, a quiet, beautiful spot to relax and share. My only regret is not getting out to Tomas' beachfront properties---maybe next winter, Tomas?
Big, Clean, well equipped, convenient, safe, near everything you need and a wonderful host to answer all questions about San Jose and Costa Rica....Enjoyed it tremendously with a great restaurant 2 blocks away...very safe to walk around.
My husband and I relocated to Costa Rica for his job in July. We rented the penthouse apartment for the first month we were here to give us time to find a place to live, buy a car, and get to know the Central Valley better. The house is located in a neighborhood that is very convenient to the city center and all the tourist destinations, like the Teatro Nacional and the Gold Museum and the Jade Museum. There are a handful of good restaurants within walking distance, though most days I walked to the grocery store and bought food to cook for our meals. Don Tomas was incredibly generous with his time, making sure we had what we needed. He helped us find parking when we bought our car, introduced us to some of his friends who had a rental home available and they are now our landlords, and he even offered to walk with me to a local furniture store and introduce me to the woman from whom he buys furniture for his homes. We ended up buying our bedroom set and living room furniture from her a couple weeks later. Not only did we have a comfortable stay during our international move, which can be a hectic time, but we also made a dear friend. Last details: Romeo, Don Tomas' trusted taxi driver, is a gem. We still call him now and then when we need a ride to the airport or somewhere else I don't want to drive. He helps me with my Spanish and with learning different routes around the city. Socorro, Don Tomas' housekeeper, is a very friendly lady and keeps the place absolutely spic and span. We enjoyed our time in Barrio Otoya very much and would recommend the penthouse apartment to anyone interested in spending some time in San Jose.
We came to help our son recover from maxillofacial surgery, so our stay was longer than the norm. This was such a lovely, peaceful oasis and Don Tomas went out of his way to make sure we were all comfortable. This is a spacious and pleasant apartment, immaculately kept, and the garden is so inviting! The property is very secure. It is an easy 1 km walk to central San Jose (as long as you watch out for the traffic), where you can find the central mercado as well as a couple of supermarkets, plenty of shops and restaurants.
Words to the wise traveler: remember this is a big city with the usual problems associated with great socioeconomic diversity. Tall wrought iron fences topped with razor wire are ubiquitous throughout the city, and however exclusive, Barrio Otoya is no exception. Be sure those security measures are there for a reason. Take precautions especially if you choose to go out at night.
We would highly recommend this property if you are spending any time in San Jose. Thank you again Tomas, for your kindness during our stay!
I had a difficult time finding lodging in San Jose that was in a safer neighborhood with historic charm until I stumbled upon Casa Don Tomas. I am always a bit leery paying full cash payments up front for a rental in a foreign country, but took a gamble on this one. I was glad that I did. Tomas was an incredible host. He was responsive to all of my questions prior to arrival (i.e. dates, location, confirming receipt of my cash deposit, etc), confirmed our reservation two days prior to arrival, and arranged an airport pick up for my husband, parents, and I, which I was grateful for after a long day of travel. Romeo, our kind driver even offered to stop by a market on the way to the penthouse so we could pick up some snacks and cold beverages.
The penthouse was perfect for our first two nights in Costa Rica. There are good restaurants Cafe de los Deseos for dinner and La-Criollita for breakfast) in the area and it was an easy 15-20 minute walk to the downtown center and the mercado central. The second story penthouse has a small kitchen and lovely dining/sitting area and downstairs there is very quaint garden courtyard surrounded by beautiful flowers and nesting parrots. We loved the tranquil garden so much we spent our second evening in San Jose enjoying the courtyard, which included a Jacuzzi.
Upon our departure, Tomas was gracious to share his personal cell phone with us in case we had any problems throughout our trip. Thank you Tomas for the wonderful visit.
Note to travelers: Heed the warnings to avoid driving in San Jose. If we had rented a car at the airport at 11 pm we would have never found Penthouse Don Tomas. Instead, ask Tomas to have Romeo pick you up from the airport and then check with your car rental company to see if they will pick you up at the Penthouse. San Jose is incredibly congested, parking seems non-existent, and the streets are not very well marked.
TOURISM: From the Casa Don Tomas as your headquarters you can visit different parts of the country in short one or two day trips. Don Tomas's choice of tours are: One day white-water rafting tour, The Coffee Plantation Tour and the Arenal Volcano National Park Tour. Last and the one I like the best a three day or more visit to Santa Teresa. A surfer's paradise and perhaps the nicest beach in the Pacific side. Don Tomas owns a Vacation Villa in Santa Teresa and will be glad to help you plan a visit to his villa or with your choice of any other tours. Nightlife is exciting in San Jose with fine restaurants, bars, disco dancing, nightclubs and casinos, Most major hotels like Hotel Del Rey, The Sportsmen Lodge, The Aurola Holiday In, are but a few blocks away.
