Our relaxing beach retreat is tastefully decorated in a contemporary Balinese style with a soothing and warm tropical feel, and lacks of nothing. It is immaculate, quiet, and very comfortable—and just a block from the beach.


It’s all in the details.

This remodeled beach home’s focus is on comfort and relaxation. It has a peaceful, tropical feel throughout that puts you at ease, accented with unique art and handcrafted furnishings.

A spacious, open-concept floor plan keeps you connected, and the welcoming living and dining areas encourage you to sit down and enjoy time together.

Prepare a meal in the well-stocked gourmet kitchen and then enjoy it in the Balinese-inspired dining room.

We provide soft white towels, high-thread count sheets, and a collection of quality personal bath care items. Robes and slippers will be waiting for you, too.

Beach Lover’s Retreat is another level of dog-friendly, with plush doggie beds, blankets and a dog-friendly beach just at the end of the street. Plus, our backyard is fenced for their safety and your convenience. One guest commented, “…my dog is still wondering why we had to come home.”

In-home entertainment abounds – provided are libraries of hit movies, children movies, and multi-genre music CDs for your enjoyment! We also have a large family game collection.


After a long day at the beach or the Boardwalk, gather around the outdoor fire pit.

There is a Weber gas grill for preparing your fresh catch-of-the-day from the Santa Cruz wharf and other finds from the nearby farmers’ markets.

Enjoy your meals around the backyard dining table next to the grill, and relax afterward in our lounge chairs.

The secure fenced backyard means you can let your children and four-legged companion run free. And there is an outdoor hot + cold shower for use after coming off the beach or when the pup has rolled in the sand all day.


Our vacation home is located in a safe residential neighborhood that embraces the best of the “Santa Cruz vibe.” It’s very much a “wave and say hi” kind of place.

The beach’s sand and waves are right at the end of our street, just a block away. We’re within walking distance of 41st Avenue, the main artery in the area for restaurants, coffee houses and shops.

There’s plenty of parking with 3 on-driveway spots all your own.

We are located just 5 to 10 driving minutes from the Boardwalk and Capitola, and 15 minutes from the eclectic Pacific Street shopping / dining downtown area. The home is 50ish minutes from Monterey and Carmel.


We’ll provide you access to a customized smartphone and web app that is loaded with our Santa Cruz Insider’s Guide. Plus we are just a quick reply away with answers to any questions you may have.

And we give back to the Santa Cruz community - through donations to the Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County and the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County.

About Linda Lanzl Hoagland and Cal Hoagland

Hi there! Our family—Cal, our Australian Shepherd, Mattie, and myself, Linda—would like to welcome you to our beach home.

We bought this place so we could eventually retire near the ocean. In the meantime, we’ve taken a lot of pride in decorating to make it feel truly like a home away from home, with all the amenities (and a few extras) to create a warm, inviting and peaceful place for our guests. Our neighborhood is safe and the folks are warm-hearted and full of that unique Santa Cruz spirit.

Cal and I love to travel and are blessed to have visited many exotic and wonderful locations around the world, and this is why you will find a host of travel and destination books from places we’ve enjoyed. If you’ve also been bitten by the travel bug, have a look through them and enjoy!

Why Linda Lanzl Hoagland and Cal Hoagland chose Santa Cruz

We chose this location because it’s a wonderful neighborhood near one of the best beaches in Santa Cruz. The beach is just at the end of the block and it’s very dog friendly, which was important to us. Walking the shoreline, we’ve spotted many otters, seals, porpoises, and even whales. We also love seeing the plentiful pelicans line-up in formation and glide over the surface of the water. We wanted a home with a nice-sized backyard, which was difficult to find, especially this close to the coast. But we found one! And our landscaped backyard is one of our favorite spots.

We were thrilled to get everything we wanted with the Beach Lover's Retreat, and we love sharing our cherished place by the Pacific with others!

What makes this house unique

Our home has a distinctive tropical yet modern flair, with every aspect chosen with the comfort of our guests in mind. The kitchen is completely renovated and is stocked with everything you need. The bedrooms are spacious and luxurious. The bathrooms have a nautical, yet Zen, feel. The backyard is a real treat with patio furniture, a gas BBQ, lounge chairs and a wonderful fire pit to roast marshmallows and hotdogs and cozy up to on brisk nights. You can hear the ocean waves from here. We also have a wonderful sitting area in the front of the house and folks love it because you can people watch and wave and say hello to neighbors, or sip and savor your morning coffee. It really makes you feel connected to the neighborhood. And we enjoy being hosts to our guests to ensure they feel special—like locals!—and have a great Santa Cruz visit.

What a lovely home you have. We enjoyed it so much. Great location and everyhting we needed. Decor is beautiful. We enjoyed the beach, the boardwalk, walks in the morning and your DVD collection catching up on new movies we hadn't seen. We hope to visit again.

The home was beautifully decorated, very comfortable, and contained all the necessities for a fun and relaxing vacation, including dog beds, dog treats and toys. We especially loved the beach decor, so tastefully done! The weather was perfect, and we enjoyed sunset at the beach, which was only a five-minute walk. Would definitely like to return and we absolutely recommend your charming home,

Wonderful beach house

My husband, daughter and I stayed at this beach house for a week with our 3 year old Golden Retriever. What a great place. The kitchen was beautiful and we loved the décor. It was very spacious and comfortable. We did not need for anything as the house was fully stocked. There was a nice sized back yard for our pooch to run around too. Honestly, we didn't want to leave.

Our Favorite Retreat

We have stayed at the Beach Lover's Retreat four different times, and the experience is always wonderful. The thoughtfulness of owners Linda & Cal always shows through in the comfort and amenities provided. From the beach towels to the beach chairs and umbrellas, the BBQ with plenty of backup propane, the comfortable furniture, wonderful selection of books, games, DVD's, bedding, and more everything is done extremely well. The beach is wonderfully close and there are tons of excellent places nearby for food.

We really cannot recommend this property highly enough!

Great ocean get-a-way!

My daughter, my two teenage grandkids, and myself recently stayed at Beach Lover's Retreat. We are planning to return sometime. The house was beautiful, very clean, and comfortable. The two bathrooms were very clean. The kitchen had every appliance that we could wish for. We used the washer and dryer several times. The sofa bed is comfortable. The owners do everything possible to make the stay a memorable one. The beach was one block away and very accessible. The house contains games and toys for all ages and toys and treats for four-legged family members. All interesting places in the area to visit are within a short drive. several beaches are within walking distance. And, the beaches are clean! We did visit Kong's Market one block away for sandwiches and soda, and also Cole's BBQ several blocks away (but within walking distance). The kids thought the BBQ was their favorite food of the trip. The neighborhood was quiet with only light auto and walking traffic. Linda and Cal do a great job. They are also easy to correspond with before, during, and after the visit.

A True Delight

From the moment we arrived at Beach Lover's Retreat, we knew we were in for a real treat. Just taking a tour of the yard and home elicited so many 'wows' and 'look at this' from my whole family (meanwhile our dog's tail was wagging in delight as she found a basket of dog toys to enjoy). The decorations and special touches throughout the house are so well thought out, and the organization makes settling in just a breeze. We did not have much down time during our trip, but when we did, I truly enjoyed being in such a relaxing environment. We also loved the assortment of board games provided!

The location of the property is great- beach is just up the street, and you are otherwise quite central to whatever activities you may plan around the Santa Cruz area.

Finally, Cal and Linda really excel as owners. They are thoughtful, respectful, and genuinely want you to have the best stay ever.

I booked the Beach Lover's Retreat 9 months in advance based on its great reviews. I am so glad we did and would now recommend it to anyone!!

Beach Front Shangri-La

My husband and I have rented many VRBO's before, but rarely have we seen the attention to detail of every home comfort as this property exudes! Cal and Linda's communication was stellar and frequent from the moment we booked and throughout our stay. The home has everything you need for the beach (chairs, towels, shovels, Frisbees), as well as anything you'd need for a stay at vacation home. A nice bottle of wine & biscotti were waiting on the table to welcome us.

The house is located about a 3 minute walk from the beach and our lab could be off-leash much of the time. We shopped for groceries at Whole Foods (about 5 minutes away) can also find Macy's/Target/Kohl's, Sears, etc. nearby.

Inside the house, the linens/furnishings and every detail was considered. Every time I turned around, I saw a new beach momento/special item for my eyes! Heaven!

There was plenty of room for us all to have space to ourselves and to gather. Outside, the BBQ and firepit were ready for action...and it was great to have complete privacy from the adjoining homes (they are all single level). We had most meals at the outdoor table & chairs...very relaxing! And we watched many of the DVD's available in the family room. Having a washer/dryer gave us a chance to bring fewer items as well...which was great.

Cal & Linda also took great care to make sure our lab was welcomed! Several pet beds, blankets, dog biscuits and bowls awaited her! I think I even saw a pet first aid kit!

Being gluten free, I found so many good options for me! We ate at Café Limelight (gf panini), Laili (delicious with a beautiful outdoor patio), Walnut Ave Café (great b'fast) and Zameen (Mediterranean). Don't miss the gift shops Outside In and Wisteria. And Gayle's Bakery in Capitola is a must-visit! We also hiked twice at the Forest of the Nisene. BEAUTIFUL and only a 7-8 minute drive. Check out Beer Thirty, too...we brought pizza & you can pick from many beers on tap or in bottles, bring your dog & play ping pong or corn hole! On our last night, Lou Gramm was playing at the Boardwalk (free Friday night concerts)...that was super cool to hear old Foreigner songs!

All in all, this is one fabulous rental. You'll want to move to Santa Cruz after being treated to such a nice property and weather! We do!
