Lefktro Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Great terrace, unique sea view & position, 2 bedrooms, sleeps 4-6, top kitchen

Our house is situated in Greece, on the southern tip of the Peloponnese, that is, on its middle finger. It is the authentic house and surrounding area out of the story ' Zorba the greek'.

The story took place here in 1917.

'.The Original Zorbas House is located in the small hamlet of Prastova, above the village of Stoupa. The nearest larger city, Kalamata, is about one hour drive away and amongst other things has a fantastic weekly market and an important harbour. The area is called Mani and the region Messenia. Prastova irradiates an enchanted tranquillity, away from the hustle and bustle but at the same time only 1 km from the next village, Stoupa. The sandy beach of Kalogria, where the famous sirtaki dance from “Zorba the Greek” took place, is only a stone's throw away (2 minutes by car, 10 minutes walking). The Original Zorbas House has about 160 m² of living space (5 rooms) and is ideal for 4 to 6 persons. It is a closed ensemble with courtyard, terrace and balcony with amazing sea views and is situated about 300 m high.

Special features: The kitchen on the upper floor has direct access to the terrace. There is a transportable outside grill for the terrace. Open air barbecue with sea view!

There is a former cistern below the courtyard and the mountains and a small cypress forest behind the house, surrounded by bizarre rock formations. Towards the ocean, the view is over a group of huge eucalyptus trees. Very romantic!

In the garden, you will find a fantastic rock shower, situated between tree-high agaves and cactuses, with sea view, too! Pure Nature!

Thanks to the house's protected location, it is quiet and protected from the wind as well as shaded and cool in summer.

Together with the interesting atmosphere of the old stone house dating back to 1891 and the stories around the Original Zorbas House, the stylish ambience of the entire property offer ideal conditions for exceptional and relaxing holidays in Greece.

History: The national poet Nikos Kazantzakis from Crete operated a lignite mine from 1917 to 1918 in the hamlet of Prastova, above Kalogria, that is, Stoupa/Greece.

You can still visit the adits in direct neighbourhood of our house, from which the brown coal was extracted. It is one of the original locations of the story of Alexis Zorba. The “true Zorba story” took place in our house and was written down in the famous novel “Zorba the Greek” by Nikos Kazantzakis only in 1946.

In 1964, the novel was made into a film by Michael Cacoyannis, and is one of the biggest worldwide successes of all times, largely thanks to Anthony Quinn's brilliant acting skills and Mikis Theodorakis' famous soundtrack. Our house celebrated its 120th birthday on 24 May 2011. There is a link to our website.

Exceptional features: The house is situated right in front of a small cypress forest without neighbouring houses being overlooked. Sea views from everywhere, very quiet and unique. The house has a very good kitchen, which has direct access to the terrace. You can enjoy spectacular views of the sea and the nature from the terrace and the balcony. All rooms are equipped with first class windows and doors. Swing doors with mosquito nets and inserts included.

The house is ideally suited for bridal pairs (honeymoon!) Dreamlike weeks in a protected surrounding! All our guests, who want to have a beautiful evening with delicious greek or italian food and complete entertainment in our house, can order this extra.

Amazing experience

  • 5 of 5

An authentic stone house, tucked away in a verdant valley -- really a remarkable find considering the open, dry landscape of most of the Mani. We loved the rustic feel and the literary history of the place. It's an amazing, private spot to have a leisurely breakfast or dinner on the patio. Also very close some wonderful beaches and terrific restaurants. Everything was clean and orderly, and the owners were very attentive. Wished we could have stayed longer! Highly recommended!

Beautiful quiet place

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed staying at Zorba House. Its a traditional old stone house, but inside it's all modern, clean and tastfully decorated. We stayed with two small children and they loved it too. It's very quiet and the scenery is great. Beaches and tavernas are nearby. Useful to know is that to make use of the bathroom you have to go outside.

Old house with a real sense of history

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Zorba’s House for at the beginning of June, and had a great week. There were five of us, all adults, and there was plenty of space, but remember that any guests beyond the number of four have to use the folding bed in the living room – which is comfortable enough but lacks privacy. There’s plenty of outdoor space and great views from the balcony – bathed in sunshine early evening, perfect for a glass of in after showering (although it’s a bit cramped if more than two or three people want to use it at the same time). The house was easy enough to find using Thomas’ instructions (although access for a large car is a bit tight) and it was easy to contact Manuela and she greeted us on arrival.

Because of the nature of the house there are a few logistical issues to be aware of – from one bedroom you can only access the rest of the house by going outside, and the toilet/bathroom is not internal to the house so you need to make your way under the stars if visiting it during the night! However, these are quirks which add to the charm of the property and you get a real sense of history by staying in an old building with all its associations with Zorba. Be sure to read the book before you go and then pay homage to the bust of Kazantzakis that stands above Kalogria Beach.

The setting of the house is magical, lots of natural sights and sounds, and we enjoyed the walks through the woodland down to Stoupa and Kalogria to be great fun – but take a torch if returning on foot at night. It’s reasonably safe to walk back along the main road at night with a little care. Thomas provided some very useful information when we booked, and his advice on places of interest and the best restaurants to try out were generally trustworthy.

Definitely book a stay in Zorba’s House if you want to try something a little different!

Just back fom the coast, nestled in a natural garden of trees, this house was just great for us. It was easy to get to Stoupa, Kardamyli and Agios Nikolaos - but we felt we had real privacy and quiet. Backgammon and a glass of wine on the balcony, gazing at the sea and hearing the birds at dusk - perfect.

The house is very well cared for and had everything we needed. It's a real skill that the owners have managed to keep something of the personality of the house's history going, while making plenty space for us to make it our home for a few days. We've travelled all over Southern Europe, and this is a place we absolutely want to come back to. Thanks!

Our wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We arrived in Stoupa by bus and were wondering wether the Zorba's house was the place to live even without a car. Definitely yes!! The house is really nice. Everything, even the smallest detail, is thought to make the stay as perfect as possible. And the house is really close to Stoupa , Kalogria any facilities by foot. No need to have a car. Kalogria and the small pebble beaches close to the house are really beautiful. Our stay was thus an extremely pleasant moment and we can only recommend it.

a treasured experience

  • 5 of 5

We settled in and felt this was our own place. Very hard to leave.

We felt we were part of the history of Kazantzakis, Zorbas, Rudy and now Thomas and Katharina.

Thank you so much for your work in preservation and for opening it to

us, strangers at the start, and now part of the spirit of the house.

In the surroundings of our holiday home, you will find plenty of beaches & small coves. The Caribbean-like sandy beach of Kalogria can be reached in 2 minutes (very suitable for children). The coastal landscape & the Taygetus mountain range (highest peak: 2407 m – mountain panorama!) are very impressive. One village is prettier than the next! Thanks to the special microclimate, there is a large variety of plants (for example Alpine cyclamen) & animals. (Nature reserves Gialova Lagoon). Enjoy swimming, hiking, boat trips (Dyros stalactite caves) or sightseeing (Sparta with Mystras, Olympia, Nauplio with Epidaurus, Gytheion, Monemvasia etc.). Both in Stoupa & in the neighbouring towns and villages, there are sufficient shopping facilities & several banks. There is fresh fish every morning at Babis' on Stoupa Beach, as well as fruits & vegetables at Litsa's. Wednesday & Saturday weekly market in Kalamata with oriental flair! International dance festival in Kalamata.
