I was on holiday in Croatia touring around from Split and on to all the Islands and was looking to invest in an apartment if I saw the right place. When I arrived on Korcula I fell totally in love with the Island, it truly is a beautiful Island.
I went to see a few houses that were advertised and stumbled on this boarded up Villa right on the sea, I managed to fight my way through the overgrown garden and up onto the terrace, that was it I was in love with this house and it's location to the old historic town of Korcula. I will never forget the views from the terrace and can still never get enough of looking out over the sea and mountains opposite.
Amazing views over the sea and mountains, watching all the beautiful boats go by including some amazing cruise and sailing boats.
The location of Villa Jade as being situated in the lovely village of Medvinjak and within comfortable walking distance along the sea to Korcula old town wich has a lovely atmosphere and lots of nice resturants, bars and shops etc to keep you entertained.
We were two couples who booked adjoining apartments with magnificent sea views and huge sliding glass doors to the the very large balcony. This one balcony was separated by large plants in containers which act as privacy between apartments. Each balcony space had a table seating 4 with an umbrella and two loungers. The apartments were very comfortable and clean but lacked a few basics such as a hairdryer and coffee maker. Toilet rolls along with grocery cupboard staples such as salt, pepper and oil would have been a nice touch as would towels for the beach to save on luggage space.
Swimming area just across the road in front of the property. Small supermarket a 5 minute walk away. The sea is gorgeous so do as the locals and literally swim anywhere. Lovely 20 min walk into Korcula town which is really beautiful and mostly traffic free. Some of the narrow alleys were strung with washing and there were locals going about their business so it's not simply a tourist ghetto. There's a good variety of places to eat and drink. Our favourite bar was Vinum Bonum (Han's place), a tiny friendly bar with some nice wines (and beers of course). There are some nicely situated restaurants on a tree lined street just inside the walls but unfortunately it was too chilly when we were there (global warming is affecting everywhere). We're veggies who don't eat fish but if we had done we'd have been spoiled for choice. As it was we enjoyed Amphora the best. It does pasta/pizza and a variety of other meals. The worst one we ate in as at the top of the steps in front of the quayside. Relatively expensive for mediocre food (3 of the 4 of us thought this).
Korcula and the apartment made for a wonderful holiday and writing this review had taken me right back to wishing we were there now!!
My wife and I and another couple rented the two identical apartments on the "ground floor" of the "Villa Jade". The view is spectacular, and we enjoyed it morning, noon, and night.
The apartments are fine - for two people. They would definitely be small for four - especially with only one bathroom.
There are some problems the owner needs to address. For example:
The "ground floor" is, in fact, something like 58 steps above the street.
The top 18 steps have no railing. On the right side, as you face the "villa", the top 18 steps also had no lighting whilst we were in residence. We pointed that out to the "key lady" the first full day we were there, but nothing was done.
Even worse, the lower 40 steps do have lighting, but the lighting shines up from the steps, not down onto them, so you are blinded you as you are going up or down.
Furniture and furnishings are, to put it simply, stingy. There is only one table and only four chairs in each apartment. So if you want them on the terrace, you must carry them out of the living-dining room. If you want chairs in the living room, you must carry them back in. (When we were there, in October, the air was so moist that if you left the table and or chairs outside for even a very short time, they were soon soaking, which made it unpleasant to haul them back into the apartment.)
The sofa in the living room is underneath the television, facing away from it - an awkward arrangement at best. So if you want to watch it, you must haul chairs in from the terrace. The owner should, at the very least, invest in an additional table and an additional four chairs for each of the apartments.
There is a significant lack of glasses, coffee mugs, plates, knives, forks, spoons, etc.
We own two properties listed on VRBO and Homeaway. We have rented quite a few other properties listed on the two websites - and, indeed other properties listed on other websites. We have never run into any rental unit that was anywhere near as bare-bones as this one. The investment needed to bring these apartments up to snuff is really minimal, and there is simply no excuse not to make it.
Finally, the four of us are fairly brisk walkers. The walk from the "villa" to the entrance to Korcula is delightful. But to make it in 10 minutes, you would have to be a world-class athlete. We stopped once or twice to take in the view, and it took us 30 minutes. We enjoyed every minute of it both ways, but potential tenants should know what's what.
We had a very relaxing stay. The apartment is nice and perfect for two guests, the view is wonderful, nice local contact. Unfortunately the little local shop shut down so shopping is a 15-20 minutes walk into Korcula town. No problem for us, we like walking.
The kitchen has the essentials you need to cook a meal. Some little extras like a breadbasket, a second (bigger) bowl, a second tea towel..... would make it more comfortable, though.
Korcula is the greenest and one of the most beautiful and most interesting of Croatia's 1000 or so Adriatic islands and was said to be a favourite Greek holiday spot over 2000 years ago and the birth place of the great traveller Marco Polo. Korcula old town is described as a mini fortress, a walled city enclosed within honey colored stone walls that contained a labyrinth of quaint cobbled streets with many architectural delights, art-galleries, lots of lovely shops, restaurants and bars. All this is just a 10min scenic walk along the coast from villa Jade.
Various day trips are available by boat to the beautiful ancient walled city of Dubrovnik and the lovely islands of Hvar, Mljet and Lastovo. Things to do include: local boat hire (licence required), scuba diving + local scuba school, wind surfing, fishing and bicycle hire.
