Thar’s gold in them thar hills! Dahlonega, the Georgia gateway to the Appalachians is the site of the first U.S. gold rush. Come pan for gold in historic Dahlonega on the Chestatee river. This large home is located directly on the Chestatee river just before the Coppermines. It was recently renovated, and is now ready for eager treasure hunters and vacationers. We have central heating and air with a ductless air conditioning system in the honeymoon suite on the top floor of the house and we continue to make improvements each year so our guests have a good experience!
This warm, inviting home on the river was built in 1997. It has five bedrooms, three and a half baths, two great rooms, and two kitchens. All the rooms have high ceilings including the ground floor. If you like vaulted wood ceilings and the heavenly sound and view of the river just about one hundred feet off the covered back deck this is place to spend your vacation.
There are two suites upstairs each on a different floor with their own private bathrooms. Guests with bad knees or other disabilities can get to the mountain splendor bedroom on the main floor by going up just three steps outside and we have a handicap shower/bathtub bench for the main floor master bathroom. The house is not handicap accessible although one guest with a wheelchair commented in her review she was able to get around the main floor just fine. The honeymoon suite is the top floor and has an Amish king-size bed, a sitting area, a vaulted wood ceiling and a full private bathroom. The main floor master bedroom has a king size bed and a full private bathroom. The terrace level (ground floor) has three bedrooms of which two have queen size beds (the third bedroom has twin beds with a built in bunk-bed above for children under 12) one full bathroom, a great room/kitchen combo and a terrace under the main deck that also looks out at the gorgeous river and shoals. There is a day bed with a trundle bed below in the terrace level great room so a total of nine guests can stay on that ground floor level and we recently added another day bed in the Honeymoon Suite. So in total there are two king beds, two queen beds, two twin beds with a built in bunk bed above for children under 12, two day beds and one with a trundle bed below it, two roll out cots and two heavy duty camping cots.
Take your choice of the Goldrush bedroom with golden walls, a queen size sleigh bed, the waterfalls bedroom with a queen size bed or the wilderness adventure bedroom that has a built-in bunk bed and two twin beds below (kids love it)!
The accommodations are perfect for two couples with children, large extended families, a girls, guys or couples getaway, wedding parties (we get a lot), family and company gatherings and wine tour groups. The main floor and upstairs suites have an old feel to them even though the house is relatively new. Several rooms have antique dressers and gold accents. We have four televisions with Direct TV; the two upstairs bedrooms each have one and the two great rooms each have a television.
There are several old photos of civil war heros and the old south as well as some books about the area. The ground floor has an open airy feeling with high ceilings and lots of windows. Even the bathrooms are fun in this house! You'ens come down yonder and have yur picture taken with our life-size wooden hillbilly, Jed! He'll be out on the deck with his moonshine awaiting your arrival.
Have you ever panned for gold? This house comes with several gold pans so your family and friends can come search for gold without ever leaving the property. At least two of our guests have found gold right on our property. The house has badminton, volleyball, horseshoes, croquet, frisbee toss, weighted yard dart toss, a fire pit, hammock and a picnic table so you can play next to the river. We have wireless internet, Direct TV and a several indoor games and puzzles. If you want to learn to kayak we have a family member who is an avid sit on top kayaker and can give you some instructions as well as provide a few boats. Please contact owner for details.
There are many things to do in Dahlonega including outdoor sports like kayaking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and golf. If outdoors sports are not for you there are also several vineyards (Wolf Mountain Vineyards, Three Sisters Vineyards, Frogtown Mountain Vineyards), antique shops, arts and crafts shops, wildlife preserves and festivals to explore. The Smith House is a historic family style buffet worth visiting. Lake Lanier is also only 30 minutes south of Dahlonega in Cumming and Gainesville.

About Beth Morgan White
I was born and raised in the Atlanta area, but both my parents were born and raised in Boston, MA. I currently live in Cumming, GA with my husband and our two dogs. I have a full time job at a subsidiary of a national bank. We have been renting out our river house as a vacation getaway home for over 11 years now. I love nature and the outdoors especially the mountains. I enjoy hiking, bicycling, kayaking, walking, wildlife and my pets. I try to give all our guests a good deal including one night free if two or more nights are booked. I get a lot of compliments about the house and have been told by several guests the house was better than expected. We get a lot of wedding parties that book our house since the local vineyards host a lot of weddings. I have enjoyed renting the river house out and I like knowing our house has given lots of families life-long memories they will never forget.
Beth Morgan White purchased this House in 2003
Why Beth Morgan White chose Dahlonega
We bought this house because my sister loves rivers and kayaking and she lives in Dahlonega. A large part of the rental income from our river house goes back into the house for improvements. Dahlonega is a very quaint, charming small town in the north Georgia mountains. Our river house is located directly on the Chestatee river where the first goldrush in the US took place. There are a lot of antique stores and vineyards so we get a lot of wedding parties that book our house.
What makes this House unique
The sound of the river just off the deck is heavenly. It's very relaxing to sit on the deck overlooking the river listening to the water hit the shoals below. Our river house is located on a dead end road so it's fairly private with only a two or three homes beyond ours. There is a lot of hiking in the area and you can fish and kayak on our property. However, one of the most unique activities you can do on the property is pan for gold. We have several gold pans in the house for our guests to see what they can find in the river. We also have horseshoes, badminton and volleyball you can set up in the grassy area next to the river. The square in Dahlonega is very charming and quaint. There are many stores and restaurants you can visit and if you like antiques or vineyards Dahlonega has those as well.

Trite but true - a good time was had by all!
A perfect house for our family get-together: Large, comfortable, and homey. Beautiful river property, quiet, close enough to town, and far enough away. We were in Dahlonega for a wedding weekend and didn't have nearly enough free time to just relax by the river. Maybe next time!
Family time in Dahlonega
Very nice property, great for a family gathering. Even though it rained for a portion of our trip, hanging out on the back porch overlooking the Chestatee River was very relaxing. And the owner, Beth, was very easy to work with.
Exceeding all expectations !!
Simply , this home was perfect for my needs and well kept !!
Good time with old friends
We had a wonderful time renewing old friendships during our visit. We loved being able to seat all 9 of us around the dining table where we spent a lot of time eating and talking. Also had room to sit and chat in the great room. The kitchen was well stocked. The back porch was glorious with the soothing view of the rushing water of the Chestatee River. Plenty of space to sit and enjoy. There was even a full moon. Parking was a challenge especially due to the tight drive and one gal on a walker, but we managed. The owner was a delight to deal with, also.
Thanks for taking time to write a review Patsy. I am glad you all enjoyed the accommodations and that glorious river. I appreciate the feedback about your friend on the walker as I will pass that on to future guests. We actually had a guest in a wheelchair many years ago who said she got around fine in the house, but our front driveway is a bit narrow and it is gravel so it may not be a good match for for elderly or disabled guests. You may want to try our Mt Yonah Castle in Cleveland, GA next time under VRBO 849539 although it does have several stairs in front. Thank you!
Beautiful property, great location on the river.
Very spacious, clean and everything functioned well. The covered porch on the main floor was awesome! The front driveway was steep and that would be my only complaint. We were warned in advance about the driveway, however, and there is parking behind the house.
Thanks for taking time to write a review Anne. I am glad you all enjoyed your stay and the covered deck overlooking the river with that heavenly sound of the water going over the shoals below. I hope you got used to the front driveway after the first few times of driving in and out which is what most of our guests tell me. I have added a few more photos for future guests to see for themselves. The parking in back of the house is level which may be better suited for some guests especially when they are used to Florida roads that don't have any hills. Please come back again if you are in the area or try our Mount Yonah Castle in Cleveland next time under VRBO 849539.
Fantastic family vacation on the Chestatee
Beautiful home on the river to have a great vacation. We had 6 adults and 5 children (2 yrs - 15 yrs) and there was plenty of room. The upper deck was perfect for our 2 yr old grandson. Our most special times were spent around the fire pit roasting hotdogs and smores. The grandkids really enjoyed the river. Two days before we were to go home, my 6 yr old grandson asked "when can we come back." The accommodations were great. The house was very clean and the rooms offer plenty of space. The beds were comfortable, there were plenty of linens, and the kitchen was well stocked with most anything you will need. We never had a chance to test the river for gold, but it looks very promising. The owner, Beth, was extremely helpful and quick to respond to any concerns. I would recommend this property to anyone wanting a beautiful and peaceful getaway.
Thank you Jack for taking time to write such a detailed review so our future guests know what to expect. I am glad you and the children enjoyed the house, the river and the fire pit. The three floors as well as the deck, patio and fire pit areas really give families a lot of space to spread out when they want or need a little space Please come back again!
