Thar’s gold in them thar hills! Dahlonega, the Georgia gateway to the Appalachians is the site of the first U.S. gold rush. Come pan for gold in historic Dahlonega on the Chestatee river. This large home is located directly on the Chestatee river just before the Coppermines. It was recently renovated, and is now ready for eager treasure hunters and vacationers. We have central heating and air with a ductless air conditioning system in the honeymoon suite on the top floor of the house and we continue to make improvements each year so our guests have a good experience!

This warm, inviting home on the river was built in 1996. It has five bedrooms, three and a half baths, two great rooms, and two kitchens. All the rooms have high ceilings including the ground floor. If you like vaulted wood ceilings and the heavenly sound and view of the river just about one hundred feet off the covered back deck this is place to spend your vacation.

There are two suites upstairs each on a different floor with their own private bathrooms. Guests with bad knees or other disabilities can get to the mountain splendor bedroom on the main floor by going up just three steps outside. The house is not handicap accessible although one guest with a wheelchair commented in her review she was able to get around the main floor just fine. The honeymoon suite is the top floor and has an Amish king-size bed, a sitting area, a vaulted wood ceiling and a full private bathroom. The main floor master bedroom has a king size bed and a full private bathroom. The terrace level (ground floor) has three bedrooms of which two have queen size beds (the third bedroom has twin beds with a built in bunk-bed above for children under 12) one full bathroom, a great room/kitchen combo and a terrace under the main deck that also looks out at the gorgeous river and shoals. There is a day bed with a trundle bed below in the terrace level great room so a total of nine guests can stay on that ground floor level. So in total there are two king beds, two queen beds, two twin beds with a built in bunk bed above for children under 12, a day bed with a trundle bed below it, and two heavy duty camping cots and an inflatable mattress.

Take your choice of the Goldrush bedroom with golden walls, a queen size sleigh bed and antique dresser, the waterfalls bedroom with a queen size bed or the wilderness adventure bedroom that has a built-in bunk bed and two twin beds below (kids love it)!

The accommodations are perfect for two couples with children, large extended families, a girls, guys or couples getaway, wedding parties (we get a lot), family and company gatherings. The main floor and upstairs suites have an old feel to them even though the house is relatively new. Several rooms have antique dressers and gold accents. We have four televisions with Direct TV; the two upstairs bedrooms each have one and the two great rooms each have a television.

There are several old photos of civil war heros and the old south as well as some books about the area. The ground floor has an open airy feeling with high ceilings and lots of windows. Even the bathrooms are fun in this house! You'ens come down yonder and have yur picture taken with our life-size wooden hillbilly, Jed! He'll be out on the deck with his moonshine awaiting your arrival.

Have you ever panned for gold? This house comes with several gold pans so your family and friends can come search for gold without ever leaving the property. At least two of our guests have found gold right on our property. The house has badminton, volleyball, horseshoes, croquet, frisbee toss, weighted yard dart toss, a fire pit, hammock and a picnic table so you can play next to the river. We have wireless internet, Direct TV and a several indoor games and puzzles.

There are many things to do in Dahlonega including outdoor sports like kayaking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and golf. If outdoors sports are not for you there are also several vineyards (Wolf Mountain Vineyards, Three Sisters Vineyards, Frogtown Mountain Vineyards), antique shops, arts and crafts shops, wildlife preserves and festivals to explore. The Smith House is a historic family style buffet worth visiting. Lake Lanier is also only 30 minutes south of Dahlonega in Cumming and Gainesville.

About Beth Morgan White

I was born and raised in the Atlanta area, but both my parents were born and raised in Boston, MA. I currently live in Cumming, GA with my husband and our two dogs. I have a full time job at a subsidiary of a national bank. We have been renting out our river house as a vacation getaway home for over 10 years now. I love nature and the outdoors especially the mountains. I enjoy hiking, bicycling, kayaking, walking, wildlife and my pets. I try to give all our guests a good deal including one night free if two or more nights are booked. I get a lot of compliments about the house and have been told by several guests the house was better than expected. We get a lot of wedding parties that book our house since the local vineyards host a lot of weddings. I have enjoyed renting the river house out and I like knowing our house has given lots of families life-long memories they will never forget.

Beth Morgan White purchased this house in 2003

Why Beth Morgan White chose North Georgia Mountains

We bought this house because my sister loves rivers and kayaking and she lives in Dahlonega. The rentals from our river house usually goes back into the house for improvements with any extra to support my elderly father with his assisted living expenses. Dahlonega is a very quaint, charming small town in the north Georgia mountains. Our river house is located directly on the Chestatee river where the first goldrush in the US took place. There are a lot of antique stores and vineyards so we get a lot of wedding parties that book our house.

What makes this house unique

The sound of the river just off the deck is heavenly. It's very relaxing to sit on the deck overlooking the river listening to the water hit the shoals below. Our river house is located on a dead end road so it's fairly private with only a two or three homes beyond ours. There is a lot of hiking in the area and you can fish and kayak on our property. However, one of the most unique activities you can do on the property is pan for gold. We have several gold pans in the house for our guests to see what they can find in the river. We also have horseshoes, badminton and volleyball you can set up in the grassy area next to the river. The square in Dahlonega is very charming and quaint. There are many stores and restaurants you can visit and if you like antiques or vineyards Dahlonega has those as well.

Wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay here. The house is spacious and nicely decorated. Bedrooms are quite large and there are two living areas as well. This worked great for my family and 2 siblings families. Although we didn't really get to spend much time here as we were in the area for a family wedding, it is a beautiful location and nice and peaceful by the river. We would definitely come back. Beth is a great hostess and we appreciated her quick responses to questions. I highly recommend this home. Sue

Wonderful.View is so peaceful and relaxing. The house is very nice and spacious.

Wonderful. The house is very nice and spacious. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms are big. The water for the showers are hot unlike some motels you stay in. The kitchen is stocked with enough dishes and cooking utensils if you want to cook or grill. We had ten people and we were not crowed at all. The view from the back porch of the river was nice and peaceful. When we were at the house we all stayed on this back porch. It has a long bench, two tables, chairs and two rocking chairs. It was plenty big enough to accommodate all ten of us. It was so peaceful to get up in the morning and sit on the porch and drink coffee and listen to the river flowing and the sounds of nature calling. Some of the younger generation loved playing in the river.

The owner Beth Morgan White is very nice. You email her and she gets back to you pretty quick. She will answer any questions you have and will accommodate you any way she can. I would definitely rent this property again from her. It was worth the money.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking time to write such a detailed review Patricia! I am so glad you all had a good time and the house suited your needs. I am also glad you had no issues (LOL)! We really try hard to provide a good experience for a reasonable price. I hope you all will come back again!

Great place to stay!

  • 4 of 5

The house was very spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed staying here near the river! I would have given it five stars but there were over 3 bees nest on both porches. Three people were stung several times until we were able to take down all the nests on the porches. Another problem was that the hot water ran out very quickly, like only two people were able to shower before it ran out, we found that unusual. We will definitely consider staying here again! The house was in great condition and sitting outdoors was breath taking.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking time to write a review Monica and for letting me know about these issues. I am SO sorry to hear that our guests were stung by bees. I wish you had told me when you discovered these issues as I would have sent my caretaker over to get rid of the bees nests immediately. We just had the house pressure washed at the end of June so those bees nests must be fairly new. We have a 50 gallon water heater, and don't usually have a problem with the hot water, but I will ask my caretaker if we can add a second water heater if that is an issue. It certainly should not have run out after two people showered. I hope future guests will report any issues to me as soon as possible so I can correct the problem. As you can probably tell from all our other reviews it is very important to me that our guests have a great experience. I cannot fix an issue if I don't know about it. But I do appreciate you telling me about these two things here and I hope you will come back again! If you do come back please report any problems immediately so I can address them. Thank you! Update as of 8-12-16: We had an electrician out to check the three year old water heater and he said it was set at about 10-15 degrees lower than it should have been. We are also in the process of adding an additional 50 gallon water heater so if 15 people are staying and all need showers one after another there will be plenty of hot water.

Beautiful place to make family memories.

  • 5 of 5

Tubing on the river during the day, campfire and fireflies at night! Our family had a wonderful stay at this beautiful home, which had everything to nicely accommodate all 14 of us. The natural beauty of the area was a perfect setting to create many memories that will last a life time. We will be back!

Property was beatiful.

  • 5 of 5

Right on the river. Fishing was great (bass while we were there). We slept 12 people comfortably. We also had a wedding brunch for 40 people and the deck was perfect for it with all it's seating. The sound of the river was very soothing. Located a few short miles from historic downtown where there are lots of great restaurants, specialty and antique stores. Owner Beth is very helpful and responded quickly when I had questions. We would definitely go back.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking time to write a review Karen. I am so glad our river house was large enough to accommodate the wedding brunch! The nice thing about that deck is that it is right off the main kitchen and great room and it is covered so even if there is rain you can go out and enjoy it. I hope you all will come back in the future if the opportunity arises!

Notes:
Our river house is great for extended families and groups because it has three floors and three and a half bathrooms. The inside is warm and inviting and actually feels cozy on the two upper levels if there are only two to four guests yet it has another floor below with three bedrooms and a full bathroom if you have a larger group or children. We also have a covered deck with a covered patio below so you can sit outside even in rainy weather. The river is literally in the back yard with just 15 steps from the ground floor to river level and it has many shoals so you can hear the river from the house as well as see the river. If you have an elderly relative or someone who cannot do stairs there are just three steps out front to get into the main floor with everything they would need on that level including the covered deck. And you can drive around the back of the house to the river level so they can enjoy the river without having to go down any steps.
