Perfect in every way

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a throwback, unplugged vacation where the view out every window beats anything on your iPhone, you have found the place. This cabin is darling. The bed is amazing. The shower is tiny (but, great water pressure). The kitchen is updated and well-stocked. The owners are delightful. The deck and casement windows bring the stunning outside in. There aren't many channels on the tv. No wifi. Bad cell service. All of which added to our enjoyment. The town of Mackinaw City is wonderful. We went to the Key Hole Bar and Grill 5 times in a week and felt like locals. We also loved the Island, Douglas Lake, Petoskey, Harbor Springs, the Upper Penisula, including Whitefish Point and Sou Saint Marie....I could go on and on. Oh, and we got married on the deck on a Thursday afternoon with a tiny few to witness and all of God's glory as our background. A slice of pure heaven in Pure Michigan.

Owner's Response: This was our second wedding at the cottage, and this review nailed us. Gary and I will be happy to do all we can to make your stay pleasurable. This cottage is all about siting in the 1950's rocker on the covered pergola listening to Lake Michigan waves, and/or getting your feet sandy down at the private beach in the Adirondack chairs. It is about kayaking the cove, visiting the dark sky park, and sitting with a cocktail of your choice (yes we have wine glasses) while you are watching the glory of the 2-3 hour sunset. Town and all it's funky fun is 4 miles away, so you are not too isolated. We have Dish TV but limited channels for all you techies. Verizon is the best service here and great wifi is free in at least 5 places in town including the Library and Starbucks (my choice for webinars). This is a special place, we have decided to willingly share with others (we live next door). We don't want anyone to be unhappy and we want you to know what you will get when you come. We cherish our wonderful renters, so thanks again for reminding us why we think it's special. If you want amenities head to a hotel or B&B. If you want to slow down and enjoy the beauty of Lake Michigan come to a place where we don't lock doors and don't care much about sandy feet. PS Don't forget to bring your bathing suit and sweatshirt, after all this is Michigan.

Location is AWESOME

  • 4 of 5

Gary & Sue are wonderful and made great hosts. They are also very dog-friendly. Their Mac was a very needy golden which is great and Bo (or Beau?) is an action packed Jack Russell . Our dog enjoyed playing with him. The cabin is about 200' up from the sandy beach. And the drive to town is about 7 minutes. Water, waves & stars make this a great place to relax. The stars are special because there is no ambient light around and Dark Sky is about 2 minutes from the cabin. Plus, the woods with walking paths are just across the street.

PROS: As I said: LOCATION. Everything you could think to need is in the cabin or available. Very well thought out. The range is to die for. The fridge is also upscale. The bed is nice. Large flat screen TV with DVD player. The shower is special and the HOT-HOT water never runs out. They provided bikes and kayaks for the active ones among us which was neither of us. :-) The view is terrific . The deck is very nice with a glass railing so it doesn't block the view. The sunsets are just off your back porch and every one of them was different and BEAUTIFUL. We made a point to be there for each one and were never disappointed.

CONS: The bathrooms are strange and SMALL. The bath off the kitchen has literally a 17 in. opening into the toilet and a shower (with a window to the street without a curtain) . The other bath is the sink and another toilet. At one time this was 1 bathroom but it has been divided at some point. The shower is very nice but the room is so small you can barely dry off in it. The 2 toilets are SHORT as well...a doubt 12-14" high. Normal is 15 to 19". The furniture needs updating. Right now, think old lake cabin and you have an idea...hand me down furniture. The kitchen chairs were uncomfortable.

OVERALL: a very nice place with super people but would be nicer if the furniture were upgraded. If you are a really big person, this may not be the place for you because of the bathrooms. I'm 6', 250 and it was pressing me. One things for sure, you'll never find nicer hosts than Gary and Sue.

Owner's Response: Hi all: We are always open to reviews and this one was detailed, if not a little flawed. First. yes it is an old family cabin and the bathrooms were always as they are. Small yes, but there are two of them (we have not created 2 out of 1). The shower is small yes, but there is a huge outdoor shower for those who need and want more room. Yep the toilets are short, and that may be something we can replace. One toilet was replaced a few years ago, but before the higher ones were available. The chairs are brand new within the last two months. They are practical wood and metal that are easy to clean in case peanut butter and jelly should fall. We had some old wood ones with questionable nails, so we replaced them with some modern new ones (no one complained about the old ones). Need to rethink this. The bathroom window is very small and looks out on.. (wait for it).. nothing (there is a state forest across the street), but I will get a curtain back up (there was one there a few years ago). I have been searching for a new small couch for the last few years. The one chair is 5 years old, but has had some jumping kids on it and I do agree. This is a old knotty pine cabin with antiques, real wine glasses, and all the love of a family cottage that we have decided to share (with folks and their dogs. We may rethink this). I agree, if you want something posh, try a few of the hotels in town, and share it with a few hundred other folks. If you want your own private deck and beach, dog friendly hosts, and the ambience of home; you are our kind of person.

Cozy comfort and awesome sunsets!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at the cottage. Sue was very gracious during the rental process and was very accommodating to us. While they were not able to be there when we arrived she gave us contact information and was readily available with any questions we had. Lovely little cottage, an absolutely awesome back porch with incredible sunsets and a peaceful and relaxing environment. While being out where it is peaceful you are just a short drive from Mackinaw City with all sorts of activities, shopping and places to eat. Also a very short drive to the bridge and to the ferries to get to Mackinac Island. Sue had several recommendations of places to visit that we would probably have missed if she hadn't brought them to our attention. Overall a wonderful experience for us and our dogs! Thank you Sue and Gary!!!

Wonderful beach side cottage!!

  • 5 of 5

This was a great little cottage. Close and convenient to town but felt like a world away. Enjoyed the wonderful sunsets and relaxing by the lake on the great sand beach or back deck. Lake views from the many windows. Spent the days sightseeing and great to come back to a place you could totally relax at. My kids enjoyed kayaking around the cove and we enjoyed sitting on the beach and letting the world go by. Sue and Gary were very friendly and great at suggesting things to do and places to go. The highlight of the trip for my husband and son was catching a very large salmon in the state park down the road. Enjoyed stargazing at night as the cottage is located down the cove from the Dark Sky Park. We totally enjoyed our vacation and the great weather and relaxing at the cottage was a big part of it. Can't say enough good things about this cottage. We hope to come back again sometime in the future.

Owner's Response: Great to have you guys and you hold the record for the most unique request and biggest fish caught. Glad Gary could provide a wood blank for your fillet. Thanks for taking such good care of our little cottage.

Beautiful lakeside setting

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at this lakeside cottage. The location is great; only a few miles outside of Mackinaw City, but the lakeside setting is quiet and surrounded by woods and parks. The owners, Gary and Sue ,live next door and took great care of us and made sure we had everything we needed and answered any questions we had about the cottage or the local activities. We enjoyed the beach and exploring the nearby Dark Sky Park by hiking trails and with the provided kayaks. A terrific week!
