About Stewart & Lucy
We are retired in the Texas Hill Country. In the 19 years that we've owned Gulf Dreams on-the-beach, our family has had many memorable times with family and friends enjoying all that the house and the island have to offer. In June 2015, we decided to offer Gulf Dreams on-the-beach for vacation rentals for the first time.
Stewart & Lucy purchased this House in 2000
Why Stewart & Lucy chose Captiva
Having spent winters in Florida in the late 1940's with my family to escape Michigan's severe weather, I have fond memories of the sparsley-populated Florida beaches we enjoyed. North Captiva Island rekindled these memories with its 2 miles of wildlife refuge and pristine beach just south of Gulf Dreams on-the-beach's private beach. We were living in Denver when we first rented a house on North Captiva and fell in love with the 1940's Florida atmosphere there. After 7 years of renting on the island, we decided to buy our house, and have never regretted our decision. Over the 19 years that we've owned Gulf Dreams on-the-beach, the house has hosted many of our family and friends for a unique island vacation experience.
What makes this House unique
Views of the Gulf of Mexico from the 3rd floor lanai, where we eat all our meals, and from the 4th floor master bedroom are awesome. The lush tropical landscaping, especially around the heated pool and remotely controlled waterfall, helps create the quiet serenity and privacy that make Gulf Dreams on-the-beach special. The ability to launch kayaks (7 are provided) and paddle boards (2 provided) into the Gulf of Mexico from Gulf Dreams' private beach allows guests to go out shelling at the sand bar 1/3 mile offshore and in the state wild life area. Kayaking also allows you to observe the abundant sea life these waters offer. Some of our best memories are riding bicycles (6 fat tire bikes are provided) through the wildlife preserve onto the deserted un-restored virgin beaches of the south two-thirds of the island for premier shelling, as well as observation of wildlife. Our motto is: "We will do everything possible to see that our guests have a quality experience", and we take this seriously, from the moment our guests set foot on the island to the moment they depart. Our house manager (who live on the island) ensure that all our guests needs are met, and they go above and beyond what is required.

Great Location, Great Management = Fun Week
Stayed here with a group of eleven of us who get together every two years for a group vacation in a different location each time. We chose North Captiva Island this time and found this house on VRBO and it looked like it might fit our needs. We made a good choice. 5 kids ranging in age from 2-8yo and 6 adults. The house size and layout are spacious enough to not feel like you're on top of one another all the time. Everyone had their own space and there were more than enough bedrooms for us. The outdoor spaces are amazing. We had dinner on the screened in porch every night. Access to the beach was awesome and the sandbar located right there made for a safe place for the smaller kids to enjoy the ocean without worrying about huge waves and rip currents. Dolphins and Manatees were within feet of us in the water and we saw them a few times over the course of the week. The house is well stocked from the kitchen, to bathrooms, to the outdoor stuff like kayaks and pool toys, and beach paraphonalia (chairs, umbrellas etc..). Jane met us at the boat dock when we arrived and was just awesome getting all our stuff to the house and setting us up for the week. We called her at one point during the week about a strange smell around the pool area and she was VERY responsive and had someone over looking into it within a few hours. The island itself was quiet at this time of year which is exactly what we were looking for. Getting around the island was easy on the golf carts provided with the rental. One thing to mention is that you NEED to do a good job planning your groceries/meals for the week as the availability of groceries on the island is VERY limited. Luckily we planned well for the week so we didn't need to look for much but if you don't plan well you'll be eating out all week and the restaurant selection on the island is extremely limited. However, we did go to Mango's Café and Grill for lunch and apps one day while we were there and the food was AWESOME. And GiGi the bartender made some mean Tiki drinks for the adults and some great milkshakes/smoothies for the kids. Bugs were a little aggressive while we were there but it happens sometimes in this part of Florida. All in all I'd recommend this listing to anyone looking for a nice quiet group beach vacation. Great job by Jane and Stuart and Lucy setting up a worry free week for their guests.

Nice property. As advertised, no issues. Caretakers very responsive. Kayaks, paddle boards and beach supplies new and in good condition.
We try our best to keep all of our amenities in first-class condition for our guests! Glad to hear you all enjoyed using them. Our house managers live on the island and take good care of Gulf Dreams' guests! They live only a few minutes away, and respond promptly if our guests need them. Please return in the not-too-distant future! Lucy and Stewart., Owners
Very nice home, pool and beach front.
No supermarket on the island and very few places to eat so bring plenty of food and drink.
Yes, there is no supermarket on North Captiva Island! We inform all potential guests, early on, that there's no grocery, and that it's a good idea to bring a little more food than they think they'll need. One of the pleasures of being there is its remote location, away from it all! There is a small convenience store with a limited inventory, but its best to stock extra provisions. There are 3 restaurants on the island which all serve good food. Many of our guests enjoy eating out during their stays. We're glad your group had a great vacation at Gulf Dreams, and enjoyed our pool and private beach! Lucy and Stewart, Owners
Nothing short of amazing.
This home exudes vacation from the moment you enter. When you see the view, the natural light, and the decor, you cant help but take a deep breath and relax. The pool was an oasis that provided a vacation all its own. The children spent endless hours jumping in while the adults concocted floating devices that actually worked from the swimming rings and kick boards.
The beach is majestic. The sunsets are nothing short of a fairytale. The sandbar allowed for the children to play in the water with reduced anxiety from their parents. The wildlife also made for an onsight aviary and aquarium.
Jane the caretaker was fantastic. She responded to every concern immediately AND discreetly. She was attentive as well as kind.
I would absolutely reccomend this property!
We're very pleased to hear that you appreciated Gulf Dreams' natural light (provided by our many windows and our high ceilings) and our bright beachfront decor! Our heated pool gets rave reviews from all who see it and all who swim in it! Its lush tropical landscape as well as its seclusion make it stand out as the most beautiful on the island. The sandbar just offshore our beach is a fun destination for our guests who are kayaking (we have 6 kayaks) or paddle boarding (we have 2 paddle boards). North Captiva has a state wildlife area that covers about two-thirds of the island, so we have abundant wildlife on land and sea. We look forward to having you back! Lucy and Stewart, Owners
Secluded island home
The home was perfect for our family of 12 (7 adults and 5 children). It’s secluded and on an island so you need to bring everything you need! It cost additional to park and get to the island if you don’t own your own boat! We brought our boat, and enjoyed having our own dock. We cooked everyday at the house, and it had adequate kitchen supplies (as stated in description). The main living/kitchen is on the 3rd floor. So be prepared to get your workout in with all the stairs (to be expected from the photos and description). The pool looks like like your staying at a tropical resort; however, all the vegetation around it gets in the pool. The kids didn’t mind it but the adults did. Tons of beach toys for the kids at the house so no need to bother packing any! We used the 2 golf carts daily for exploring around the island. Our kids loved shelling daily—make sure you pack a bag to carry on the beach. During our stay part of the beach was roped off for bird nesting. As you walked nearby —the birds would try to scare you away (dive down at you). Lots of mosquitos during July so pack heavy duty bug spray. All in all this house was wonderful and allowed us to create family memories for years to come!
We're very happy to hear your vacation was a 5-star experience! That is our goal for all of our guests. Gulf Dreams has its own 85-foot dock on our own fenced private lot 1/4-mile from the house, so our guests can keep their own, or a rental, boat there. Mosquitos are not usually a problem at Gulf Dreams because of on-shore breezes from the Gulf of Mexico. You are the only guest we've had in 4 years of renting our home who has mentioned mosquitos being a problem. We hope to see you again in the future! Lucy and Stewart, Owners
North Captiva Island is a bridgeless barrier island, about 3 miles long, accessed only by boat or private plane. Two-thirds of the island is a natural wildlife preserve with hiking and biking trails and remote beaches, while the remaining one-third consists of houses and sand roads. Transportation on these roads is by golf carts only; no automobiles are allowed. Uncrowded, unrestored beachs as nature made them with pristine white sand are unrivaled for sunbathing, swimming, launching kayaks, biking, shelling, hiking and fishing. It's reminiscent of Florida in the 1940's before it became a crowded tourist mecca. Gulf dreams provides 6 fat tire (4.5 inches) bikes and 6 Kayaks, 4 single and 2 tandem. Shelling on the island formed by the growth of a sand bar 1/3 west in the Gulf of Mexico provides family shelling adventures. Wild life visible from the fat tire bikes at or near low tide along the state wild-life beach often is an adventure.
