Overview

About the property

16'000 m2 land, steam bath, hot tub, grill, exclusive equipment

This exclusive villa is very well situated just opposite Akureyri. It is rented by celebrities but also by other people who enjoy the location and the high standard of the house. It was built by the Icelandic architect Fanney Hauksdottir in 2006. It was recently refurbished with high-quality equipment such as ReVoX audio equipment as well as with attractive materials such as walnut, shale and glass.

The house is surrounded by a 16'000 m2 garden and a security fence. An alarm system and cameras ensure safety for the guests. Any kind of additional service is available on request.

During winter snow drifts may block road access to the house. The road to our fence and the driveway is not maintained during winter time. In this case a short walk (400 meters) is necessary. If you have difficulties with this, have a look at our house Leifsstadir: http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p2365219.

Please note that this is a strictly non-smoking environment.

AMAZING!!!!

  • 5 of 5

This house is absolutely amazing! It is truly a destination in itself and even better than the pictures! We were amazed by all the amenities offered, especially the spa-like downstairs steam/shower room and hot tub. We found it hard to leave and explore because the house is just that incredible. It is in a perfect location to get into the city (the views are to die for!) but also to explore beyond. This house exceeded our expectations and we plan to go back again!

Luxery and great view!

Beautiful location, everything perfect. We where 6 people and enjoyed very much our stay in this house! The only downside was the sleeping bed in one of the rooms. Really perfect stay though!

Fantastic home and location

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Hrafnabjorg was a complete pleasure. The house is beautiful and very convenient to Akureyri. Sigga, the manager for the home, met us shortly after we arrived and walked us through how to operate the amenities, which was much appreciated. We cooked 3 out of 5 nights that we stayed and found the kitchen to be well supplied with kitchen tools, pots and pans, and place settings. The house was clean and orderly and the beds were comfortable. The one complaint that I do have is that the pillows in the master bedroom were not very comfortable. They are memory foam pillows, but the shape was odd for us and seemed to be congestion inducing. Otherwise, we had the most pleasant stay in this gorgeous home, the highlight of which had to be watching the Aurora Borealis from the hot tub. Thank you for a lovely visit! We certainly hope to come back!!

Amazing house and location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 14 days over the New Year and early January. We are from Ohio in the northern U.S. so our January weather is very similar. Akureyri though is more windy and the roads are often snow and ice covered.

Should one visit this property in the middle of winter? Yes with some recommendations.

You need to be fit enough to walk the 200 yards from the gate to the house if the driveway is too snowy and drifted. My wife and I are 66 years old, go to the gym four days a week and are fit. We had no trouble getting around during our visit. The locals did say this was a mild winter compared to normal. Bring walking crampons (snow cleats) for icy conditions including in town.

During our visit we were always able to drive up to the house but then we also rented a Toyota Land Cruiser with studded winter tires. You need this kind of vehicle if you will be visiting when it may be snowy. A few times we parked at the end of the driveway just in case the drifting snow was bad. The street just outside the gate is plowed as needed, usually within a couple hours of the snow ending.

When snow and wind were forecast we prepared to be snowed in a day or two and I would recommend doing that, but happily we were never snowed in.

The house itself is wonderful. On our initial tour with the property manager my impression was that it was twice as impressive as the photos on the website. I was concerned about the comfort of the fold out bed in the third bedroom but my sister, who is picky, said it is the most comfortable fold out bed she has ever slept on. The views from the house are beautiful and picturesque. The drive to Akureyri is just over 10 minutes. If the weather and roads are decent you can visit the Lake Myvatn area to the east and drive the western side of the fjord up through the four tunnels.

There were a couple problems with the house during our visit but they were promptly fixed by the property manager and her husband.

A couple additional comments, don’t miss the bakeries (they offer breakfast, lunch and coffee) or the fish and meat market at the Bonus on the south side of Akureyri. Everything is expensive in Iceland. With the fully equipped kitchen we were able to eat many meals at home reducing costs. We were never bored during our two weeks and could have stayed longer. We had a great view of the New Years Eve fireworks from the house but it might have been more fun to be in town.

Stunning property with majestic views!

  • 5 of 5

Thomas and Carmen are the perfect hosts, they make you feel at home! This is the second time we have stayed at one of their properties. They go above and beyond making sure you have an amazing stay. The home is second to none offering home automation and sweeping views! We stayed with a group of friends who are all world travellers, their collective feedback was that it was the best airbnb they had the privilge of staying at!

This home is not a place we will soon forget!

Beautiful Home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 3 nights and would recommend this home to anyone staying in the Akureyri area. The location was great, very close to the town (A little too close for viewing the northern lights). The hot tub and steam bath are amazing and very well kept. The kitchen was very well stocked and the living spaces were spacious and inviting. The photos do not do this place justice.

The house Hrafnabjörg is one of the most attractive houses in Iceland. It is located on a hill just opposite the city center of Akureyri with a magnificent view to the fjord. The short distance to the city, the opportunities for trips and the standard of the house are one of it's kind.
