Turf fire, quiet walks, deserted beaches, red sunsets, traditional music.

Your traditional thatched cottage is part of a development of ten self catering thatched cottages nestled snugly into the Donegal rockscape, commanding panoramic views of sea, mountain and off-shore islands. Even if the calendar shows that the listed cottage is already booked, another cottage on the same site may still be available, so it is best to check with us. This year turn the clock back. Discover the magic of sleeping under a real thatch roof. Waken to the warbling of the lark. Taste the salt spray on the sea breeze. Listen to the roar of the Atlantic breakers as you experience at first hand the Wild Atlantic Way. Forget about the outside world as you gather with your loved ones around a blazing turf fire. Walk our winding roads. Marvel at God's wonderful creation. Pick a bunch of wild flowers and present them to a loved one. Go for a 'hole in one' at the stunning 6th hole on our local golf links. Test your skill at kite flying. Try out the excellent fishing. Enjoy the 'craic' in Leo's Tavern and savour the music of your ancestors. Take a trip to Tory Island, the last outpost of Gaelic civilisation. Return home refreshed in mind, soul and body. Spacious accommodation for a maximum of 7 persons. We regret, no pets.

Golf: Cruit Island golf links is located on Cruit Island just down the road from the cottage. Although it is only a nine-hole course it has got many rave reviews in golfing magazines and is widely regarded as one of the very finest 9-hole courses in Ireland. Indeed the different tee-boxes on the back nine make it a virtual 18-hole course. The sea, mountain and off-shore island views from almost every tee and green are truly spectacular. It is almost impossible to come off this course feeling less than fully refreshed. The par 3 sixth hole is a real gem. Depending on wind conditions you could find yourself taking anything from a driver to a nine iron for your approach shot. If you under club you are into the sea ! If you over club you are into the sea !! Green fees are very reasonable and visitors to our cottage are offered a 20% discount.

Fishing: Your cottage offers an excellent base for either the fishing enthusiast or indeed anyone who just wants to try his hand at catching a few mackerel from the flat ledge just behind cottage no. 5. Within walking distance of the cottage you can bottom fish off the rocks for specimen wrasse, spin for mackerel and pollock or beach cast for flounder, dab and dogfish. A purpose built sea angling boat operates out of local Kincasslagh pier or Burtonport, just five miles away, while the game angler has access to 130 small lakes of the Rosses Fishery.........all within a few miles radius of the local town of Dungloe.

Walking: Above all Cruit Island is a walkers paradise. We will give you details of seven wonderful walks, each one starting at your own cottage and returning right back to your cottage. The rockscape, the hidden sandy coves, the winding side roads will all fill your senses and thoroughly refresh you. Very often you will be the only person within sight. Listen for the cuckoo or the warbling notes of the lark and keep a lookout for the rare and protected chough.

                                                      • The combination of traditional half-door, old fashioned high ceiling, open hearth turf fire and sugan rocking chairs all combine to create an olde world, 'turn the clock back' cottage concept. Side by side with the traditional there are of course the full conveniences of modern living.

                                                        lovely cottage, amazing views

                                                        Carol L.

Lovely cottage with authentic traditional feel. Amazing views, fantastic for a young family without the distractions of tv and internet! Beautiful beaches on the doorstep. All in all I would highly recommend as an escape from the hectic pace of life.

Stunning Location, Very Poor Accommodation, Shocking behavior by owner, his family and friends

                                                        KimberlyFort Garland

This area is truly beautiful and we were so looking forward to our week-long stay.

Sadly, our cottage was dirty and unmaintained. The hot water system delivers either freezing cold or scalding hot water, with a 45 minute wait to have enough warm water for one very short shower. When the out-dated water heater is on, the water from the kitchen and bathroom taps is dangerously hot - I was burned several times.

Windows and doors are so poorly sealed that the wind blowing in stirred my hair when I stood at the kitchen sink. This is particularly offensive since were were charged extra for the electric heat. Someone had stuffed paper towels in cracks and the windows were filthy. Light and heating fixtures were dirty and there was mildew around the bath fixtures. The place was "surface clean" but in dire need of deep cleaning. They had also not emptied the ash bin next to our cottage.

The furniture cushions had a musty smell that got on my clothes after sitting reading only short time. A bit hard to relax when you can't even sit down without getting stinky.

Though the description states that there are "all the modern conveniences" (most people would assume that means wi-fi) there is no wi-fi or TV. The owner told us we could "pick up" a wi-fi signal at the nearby golf course but there was no signal when we went up there and we thought it was questionable to steal wi-fi anyway.

Grey waste water is discharged directly outdoors. While this practice may be allowable in Ireland, it is not good environmental stewardship, especially at a commercial enterprise and in such a pristine location near surface water. We were very disturbed by the impacts of this very polluting activity.

The owner was rude upon our arrival, as he was offended that I had asked about negative reviews I saw on another site. He has since threatened us with legal action over our negative review, and he, his family and friends have subjected me to personal attacks via social media, including vicious name calling. None of my comments in any reviews have been personal - I have simply related what we experienced and what was said to us; but I have been accused of nit-picking, being a grump, a whiner, and even called the C-word. All because I objected to paying a premium price for substandard accommodation and dared to warn others about it?

As if any other reason was needed to steer clear of this awful place, the personal attacks have really taken the cake. Beware!

                                                        Owner's Response:

Readers are to be aware that this is not your average bona fide review. This is a review by a very vindictive person who, elsewhere on the internet, has deliberately set out to do as much damage as possible to our family-run tourism business, making many false and libellous allegations. For the first time in thirty three years we are reviewing our legal options in the matter.

The reviewer states in this review that “None of my comments in any reviews have been personal.” I now offer a selection of quotations from her other reviews : “ Mr. Ward was rude and sarcastic to me from the moment we arrived”. “Mr. Ward's nasty behavior is very disturbing”. “When we arrived he was very rude and obviously angry at me”.

I categorically deny that I was either “rude” or “offended” on their arrival. On the contrary I was pleasant, courteous and helpful as I greeted them, showed them over their cottage, and explained in detail how to operate the hot water system and where to get more turf when the turf basket became empty.

I categorically deny that the cottage was “dirty and unmaintained”. My wife, Mary, and I personally inspected that cottage before the arrival of the reviewer and her husband. It was spotlessly clean and a classic example of an authentic thatched cottage. The waste water is most definitely not discharged “directly outdoors”; it is discharged into a water treatment plant according to best practice planning.

Bearing in mind the extremely exposed but exceptionally beautiful location, it is impossible to totally storm proof against the elements, unless one resorts to pvc triple glazing, which runs counter to the whole concept of authentic thatched cottages.

The reviewer refers to a “musty smell” on the cushions. Anyone who is familiar with turf fires will know that they do leave a distinctive musty smell but most people find that smell pleasantly evocative of times past and certainly not “stinky”.

It was clearly explained to the reviewer, long before she arrived at our cottages, that in keeping with our “turn the clock back” concept we did not offer either wifi or t.v’s. That is our decision and many guests appreciate it. It is outrageous to allege that we suggested that she “steal” wifi at the local Golf Club. Had she approached the bartender, the Golf Club would have been very happy to give her the access code, on the basis that she would probably sit down and have a drink........standard practice.

                                                        CSRChelmsford MA

The location is breath taking...I felt like we were at the edge of the world. The Wild Atlantic Way does not disappoint. The Cottage has all the creature comforts and the turf fire is a wonderful necessity. Conor and Mary are helpful and accommodating.

Harvesting mussels and cockles on Cruit Island at low tide was a great way to spend an afternoon and listening to the surf with the fire cracking did us all a world of good in the evening. The cottage is an easy drive to the welcoming town of Donglow for anything you might need. Glenveagh National Park is a must see.

It's the place to be if you're looking to slow down and reconnect with your travel mates.

This island gem is truly magical. It has the most amazing ability to slow time right down to a crawl. Cruit Island & Donegal Thatched Cottages will forever be a place in my heart and soul.

Donegal Thatched Cottages is located on Cruit Island, Kincasslagh, Co. Donegal, right on the Wild Atlantic Way.
