Beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is on the lower floor of Davide and Maria's home, but is very private. It is an immaculately kept two bedroom with a king ensuite and two twins in the other with a shared bath. The livingroom is spacious, and the kitchen well stocked. The outside shutters keep the house very cool and we never needed air-con, even on a hot July Sicilian day. A short flight of stairs up and around to the backyard reveals a terrific pool with shaded sitting area and a poolhouse with a double bed and bath if you have extra guests. (be aware wifi does not extend to poolhouse). The house has two solar-heated outdoor showers by the pool, which were terrific. The pool is lit at night and we def. enjoyed some lazy evenings sipping wine under the cabana.

The gated house is super quiet, on a remote road dotted oddly with farms, beautiful homes, unfinished homes and factories all at the same time, so as you approach, you can't help but wonder (fear, even) that you must have the wrong place. There is a lovely view of the distant ocean from the front yard. The house is a ten minute drive to grocery etc. and well situated to visit southeastern Sicily.

Davide and Maria were really wonderful hosts - not too intrusive, but available for a nice chat, or to make a morning cappucino and give a recommendation for a good restaurant. Would absolutely recommend.

What a gorgeous place to come and relax!

  • 5 of 5

Wow doesn't even come close to describing our time here in Sicily. My wife and our boys, ages 9 and 6 had a once in a lifetime visit.

Our stay here was such a wonderful visit and we can't thank David and Maria for helping to make it such a wonderful and memorable visit. The pool was such a nice place to relax on those days when you didn't feel like going out or doing much. There certainly isn't anything like going for a quick swim at 9 in the morning before the day gets under way. The suite in the lower level of the house was perfectly set up for a couple with kids allowing my wife and I to relax and have some privacy at the end of a great European vacation. The Sicilian meal that David and Maria and their family hosted for us during our stay was great. Even though their English wasn't the best, it was much better than my Italian. The food was great and the antipasto was to die for. We all agreed at the end of the meal that sometimes in life, one must Carpe Diem-seize the day! We really enjoyed getting to know the family.

We were blessed with the opportunity to see the Modica and Ragusa with my sister and her family who stayed with us during our visit. Our first beach we were blessed to visit was Sampieri and it was great. The warm waters of the Mediterranean certainly soothed a few sore muscles and we truly enjoyed this beach. The warm sand and shallow waters were great and our boys really enjoyed the beach here. We really enjoyed having Gelato and the chocolate is to die for. We loved visiting Modica just to visit the chocolate stores and sample the delicious mouth watering choices they had out, too bad we didn't buy more.

The opportunity to visit Taormina and Etna wasn't one we were going to pass up and it didn't disappoint. We had a tour guide take us up which was great because the driving there was a memorable experience and I won't forget how narrow the streets are. The views from and the architecture from the ancient theatre in Taormina were stunning and breathtaking all at the same time. It was hard to believe that we were sitting on something built hundreds of years ago. Coming from Canada, this is not something we see at all really. Our boys really enjoyed going up Etna and it was the only time it was cool really for our trip to Italy. We had fog and rain and enjoyed the cooler temperatures. To sum it all up, don't pass on this place to stay. It was a place that didn't disappoint for us and won't for you either. Thank you David and Maria

Wonderful holiday with Sicilian hospitality

  • 5 of 5

This is a delightful apartment, very comfortable, light and spacious. Outside there is an extensive patio with a lovely terraced garden and steps leading up to the good-sized swimming pool - perfect to dip into after a hard day's sight-seeing.

Indeed there is much to see and do in this part of Sicily and the apartment, although in a rural area, is ideally located for shops, restaurants, beaches and the beautiful Baroque towns of Modica, Ragusa, Scicli, Noto and Siracusa. The first three towns are used as locations for the Montalbano series and if you want you can make the pilgrimage to Punta Secca and see the fictional character's house which is actually a B&B!

There are many lovely beaches to choose from with long stretches of golden sand and clear shallow water ideal for children. We would recommend La Spiaggetta, at Sampieri and Plaia Grande, between Donnalucata and Marina di Ragusa.

A drive inland up to Piazza Armerina takes you through some stunning scenery and spectacular views of towns such as Caltagirone. Outside Piazza Armerina is the Villa Romana del Casale with its wonderful mosaics and you can watch the archaelogists at work as they continue to excavate the site.

As well as all this what really made the holiday extra special was the generosity and kindness of our hosts Davide and Maria - we enjoyed traditional Sicilian savoury breads and pizzas made by Maria' mother, wine made by a friend of Davide's and endless espressos. Davide also cooked a delicious lunch for us.

This was our first time in Sicily and we cannot think of a better introduction to this beautiful and interesting island. Everywhere we went people were friendly, helpful and very patient as we struggled to communicate in our very patchy Italian, but as Maria often said "Piano, piano" - slowly, slowly.

We hope to return to Sicily at some point in the future as there is so much to see and would love to come back to apartment Callamarieri. We would certainly have no hesitation in recommending this property to our family and friends.

A great holiday rental with a personal touch

  • 5 of 5

What a fantastic place! We received a warm welcome by the owners, Maria and Davide, who looked after us very well during our two week stay. The lovely cappuccinos and other unexpected treats were highly appreciated and gave it the personal touch that sets this property aside from others.

The apartment itself is of a high standard with lots of space and homely comforts. The location is particularly suited to those who appreciate peace and quiet, yet in close proximity to the beach as well as the beautiful and lively town of Modica. The pool is of a good size and ideally located with an excellent view of the surrounding area. Underwater lighting enables swimming when the stars are out.

A car is essential to explore the island and for grocery shopping. During our stay we visited the towns of Modica, Ragusa and Syracuse as well as Mount Etna. Modica has a wide range of restaurants and the atmosphere at night was truly enjoyable.

In summary we had a lovely and relaxing holiday and we would definitely recommend this property to those who seek a rustic environment with plenty of opportunity to discover and enjoy the rich culture of southern Sicily.

Cannot recommend this villa highly enough!!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot recommend this villa highly enough!! It exceeded ALL reasonable expectation! The price is vastly undercharging for the quality of the villa: the standard of furnishing and decoration throughout is extremely high, with no expense spared. It is spotlessly clean, spacious, homely and cool, with air conditioning and a dishwasher. It was wonderful to have such a good sized pool just a few steps away, a lovely terrace for meals, and a view over the surrounding farmland with the sea in the distance. Our neighbours were also great - a pony and 3 donkeys!

Above all, however, it was the family that made our stay so extremely enjoyable: Maria, Davide and their children Michele and Sara went far beyond the call of duty to make us feel welcome and to help us. On arrival, Maria met us with wine, olive oil and Modican chocolate, and she and Davide were extremely helpful in giving advice and maps on places to go and good restaurants to visit. Over the course of our week, Davide not only made brought us cocktails, cappuchinos and biscuits by the pool, but even took us out for a traditional Sicilian breakfast (delicious caffe granita and brioche) and made us dinner of fantastic spaghetti alle vongole, with a bottle of wine thrown in too. On our final night, the whole family took us out for traditional arancini and cannoli, overlooking Modica old town. It was a wonderful combination of having your own space and privacy, but also feeling very welcome, at home, and able to experience genuine Sicilian life.

I would definitely recommend this property. We went as 3 graduate students (all 23) but really, the villa is suitable for all ages, and can easily sleep up to 6.

Quite apart from the villa itself - the location is also ideal: 5 minutes from a major supermarket, 8km from the sea, on the doorstep of the beautiful UNESCO town Modica, and within driving distance of stunning Noto, Syracuse, San Lorenzo, Catania and Mt Etna - we managed all of these easily within a week, with plenty of sunbathing time left over. Sicily as a whole is also a wonderful space - genuinely friendly and helpful people with a wonderfully relaxed attitude - no rip-offs; not even ticketed parking! Go if you can!!
