Fantastic,Beautiful Peacefull Holiday Home

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from this Fantastic holiday home in the Dordogne. An hour before leaving the UK we had pet passport issues, a nail in the tyre (no spare) and two hours into our 6.5 hour french drive, some Frenchman drove into me car !, so to say we had the hump and wanted to turn back is an understatement. However, we carried on like true spirited Brits & found the home easily thanks to Jame's guide & route. We were totally blown away by the sheer beauty of what we were met with walking around the property. All the problems of the last 24 hours had been forgotten (although we still had a nail in the tyre) We settled in and it truelly was like being at home for us (which we have never felt like in anyones holiday home) A choice of 3 bedrooms all with double beds, lovely fresh plump duvets and pillows all again of great quality. Each room having a floor standing fan (which was needed as the temp hit 80's. Bathroom with bath, and over shower that had a fully adjusable head on a flexi hose, sink & separate toilet. The living room area was huge with reclining furniture and a large plasma type tv with Sky box (with UK channels) Kitchen had enough room to cook full meals and loads of storage. The pool area and gardens are the best we have seen. So peacefull & quiet. The pool has steps to get in and is around 4.2 ft deep all over and is heated by a pump system not a cover, so available to use even if the weather is not on your side. Saint Astier is the local village and has a great market with fresh produce, there is also a lidls on the main route out 1 min from the village. If you head to Menzanec (10 min drive from the house) there is a Spar that stocks more choice of breads and spices than the Lidls or the Aldi''s..& there also is a petrol garage there. The Spar, like all shops close between 12-2 and closed all day Sunday.Take a drive to Sarlot, this is a must see place & if you are a game of thrones fan you will not be dissapointed by it's medieval look.It is not in the series but should be.Brantome is another fantastic place to visit, with it's river and Abbey, take a boat ride they leave at 11am, 2,3,4 & 5 pm daily, takes 50mins & costs around 7eu. We drove up from Le Harve & the toll's in total to the home came to around £40 each way. all machines take cards using contactless system so no tapping in numbers etc. There are routes to the home that do not go via toll roads but I would imagine they take longer. Lastly special thanks to James for all his help....

Fantastic, tranquil retreat with great pool

  • 5 of 5

We (five adults and dog) had a great stay here at the end of August/beginning of September. The house has everything you need and if you didn't want to explore the area you could laze by the pool all day. The views are beautiful.

We (me, husband & son) drove over from Yorkshire via Eurotunnel but 2 flew into Bergerac, which was about 40 minutes away and a lovely drive. Limoges airport is a bit further, about 2 hours, where we had to drop the son off.

We visited the Chateau at Bourdeilles, kayaked from Brantome to Bourdeilles, enjoyed the Friday market at Brantome, walked through Roque Christophe and had a lovely drive through the area.

There is a lot to do and loads of places to visit, only wish we'd had 2 weeks instead of 1. We were lucky to have such lovely weather too, the pool and bbq were used extensively as was the supermarket in St Astier!

We had a fantastic week at La Barde

  • 4 of 5

We're a family of five (children aged 7, 10 and 12) and had a fantastic week at La Barde and would highly recommend staying there to anyone. The house was spacious – the living room especially so – and all rooms comfortably furnished for our requirements. The garden was beautiful and the kids and I spent hours and hours having fun in the new pool. Fantastic. The view across the fields was lovely and we were spoilt for choice for places to sit, eat and enjoy the exterior thanks to tables under the veranda, on the decking, and the “conservatory” room. The house easily accommodated the 5 of us and could take a few more so long as they were happy to take advantage of the sofa beds provided. The kitchen was one of the best we’ve experienced on holiday and the barbecue outside was handy. It was 30+ degrees every day (bar one) and we were very glad to have the electric fans in all the bedrooms.

La Barde is in a great location to explore the Dordogne (or Perigord) in all its different guises. Montignac, Sarlat, Beynac, the amazing prehistoric caves, Brantôme and a host of other places in all directions are within an hour or so. Perigueux is lovely and the market in St Astier on Thursday mornings is worth a visit. The new LeClerc supermarket in St Astier covers all the basics and much much more as do all the standard supermarkets nearby. But don't expect to walk down to the local bar or shops - La Barde is about 3km from St Aquilin (1 bar/restaurant) and a 15 minute drive from Astier. However, the near seclusion suited us perfectly.

Peter, who pops in to look after the pool, brought a large bowl of gorgeous ripe figs – really thoughtful touch.

We flew East Midlands-Limoges via Ryanair (laborious checking-in of course) and had a hire car from Europcar that did the trick nicely and it was great to be out and about as well relaxing at the house.

Great week, fab house, highly recommended to all.

Great property with everything you could need for a truly relaxed holiday. The property was comfortable, well maintained and set in one of the most beautiful parts of France we have had the pleasure of visiting. We are looking forward to returning next year.

Superb little Gite!

  • 4 of 5

My friends and I had a fantastic stay at La Barde which was an easy drive from Bergerac (50mins), Bordeaux (1.3mins) and Perigeux. It really is set in the heart of the Dordoigne and has terrific views of the countryside.

The Gite itself served our needs which was largely relaxing in the sun with a book and being close to local markets. It has the necessities like a hot shower, BBQ, log fire (although far too hot outside!), cooker, double beds and a plunge pool. Actually, the plunge pool was a slight concern before arriving but it was well decked so looked lovely, was so refreshing/clean and overlooked the scenery.

A car is an absolute must, although the tourist information at St Astier were very helpful in organising taxis too and from a wedding we were attending.

There is canoeing (book a day or so early), local supermarket (shuts after 1pm on a sunday!) and fishing nearby and Perigeux is worth a visit.

For us 27-30 year olds it was all we needed and we would certainly return.

Nearest Train

St Astier
Car: necessary

Périgueux is the county capital of the Dordogne (its Préfecture) a territory roughly corresponding to the ancient Perigord. HERITAGE SITE: The UNESCO World heritage sites of the Lascaux Caves and the region around Les Eyzies. Many local markets to name a few, St Astier, Riberac, Brantome, Bergerac, Sarlat. Local canoeing at Sarlat, Brantome, St Astier. Many places to eat in Perigeuex, Begerac, Brantome, Riberac. Fishing available locally in St Aquilin.Sarlat-la-Caneda is really worth a visit. In the heart of the Perigord Noir, Sarlat grew up around a Benedictine abbey founded in the 9th century. It has a distinct medieval feel about it, with numerous magnificent buildings around every corner you turn. The towns Saturday market is also a main feature with its truffles, foie gras and mushrooms (depending on the season). Brantome is known as the 'Venice of the Perigord', has a VIIIc Benedictine Abbey with monastery gardens, caves 'Grottes du Denier Judgement' and superb restaurants.
