Located 40 feet from the corner of Haight and Ashbury, it offers a quiet refuge within the center of the most colorful neighborhood in the world. No need for a car as five bus lines, one block away, take you anywhere you want to go. Easy access to UCSF.
The flat is attractively furnished and has a wood burning fireplace in the living room, two bedrooms with queen-size beds (one with marble washstand). There is a sit-down kitchen with stove, microwave, dishwasher, and full-size refrigerator. All dishware and linens are included. The bathroom has a tub with shower and the service porch has a washer and dryer. It is fully equipped with Wi-Fi internet access, Cable TV and DVD player. (Macintosh iMac computer is included).
There is a family-run market one-half block away with organic fruits and vegetables, sushi bar, espresso bar, full butcher shop and a complete delicatessen with both hot and cold foods. Haight Street itself has a collection of one-of-a-kind shops, interesting bars, restaurants, a world-class brew pub, all within three blocks. A bit farther (approximately a mile) is the fabulous California Academy of Sciences, the DeYoung Museum along with all the other recreational features of Golden Gate Park.
Taxis abound on Haight Street, just walk out the door. But don't miss the experience of riding the buses. This apt is a great place to stay if you are visiting SF. The pictures don't really do it justice. It's spacious, extremely clean, and has lots of extras such as magazines, books, premium cable channels, thick towels/washcloths, great showerhead, etc. David and Karen also greeted us with a nice bottle of wine and a fruit basket! The home is modern where it counts yet still has many of the original Victorian touches. This was our first time in this wonderful city and we wanted to see as many sites as possible. Staying in the Haight was great because everything was easily accessible. There is a gourmet market very close to the apt on Haight St. We also shopped at the Lucky supermarket which is a short bus ride away. The prices are really good at this supermarket. We walked from the apt through Golden Gate park and got to see the AIDS Memorial Grove on the way to the Academy of Science. The bus is one block away and connects to other buses, trains, and trolleys. I highly suggest purchasing a City Pass if you plan to see the sites. If going to Alcatraz, get the City Pass from their site. You should also make a reservation for that tour before getting there. The City Pass contains a transit coupon that's good for 9 days from the date you put on it and can be used for all types of public transportation. To be honest, none of the trolley/bus drivers even looked at the date, just the pass book. David was a great host and very helpful! We truly enjoyed our week in SF including experiencing tremors from the Sonoma earthquake a few hours before we left to go home!!!
My 15 year old daughter, mother, and myself picked San Francisco to be the location for our "generation trip". I wasn't familiar with San Francisco, but decided that Haight-Ashbury area would be a fun place to stay. We found this rental and was pleasantly surprised at the beautiful home. The three of us were able to comfortably rest, eat, and sleep. My daughter was fascinated by the architecture and had to take pictures to show her friends back home.
If you are looking for a great place to stay with a taste of San Francisco history then look so further. You won't regret your stay!
My husband and I spend a wonderful 6 days in San Francisco and staying at this flat made it even more enjoyable. Haight Ashbury is truly a colourful neighbourhood and while we were concerned with the number of street youth (etc) at first, they keep to themselves and did not bother us. David was a great host and very helpful with suggestions.
The apartment is very close to all amenities and transit (cost $2 to ride the bus). We arrived and it was immaculately clean and although it is an old house, many upgrades have been made to it. Very comfortable to relax in after a long day of sightseeing and If you need anything, popping out to the market is a two minute trip. The hosts live in the building and are very quiet themselves.
We'd recommend staying here and would stay again next time we travel to SF.
My wife and I, plus two friends from the UK spent 8 days at David and Karen’s apartment in the Haight in July to celebrate a ‘big’ birthday.
We had stayed in the apartment a couple of years ago and our visit this time was as good, if not better. The second bedroom faces Ashbury Street, just past the famous Haight-Ashbury Street sign, so obviously there is some street noise, but nothing that detracted from our stay. As described in my previous rating, there really is nothing missing and the VRBO pictures do not do it justice—immaculately clean and fully equipped. The second bedroom was great and the apartment suited two couples very well—big enough so that you are not tripping over each other, but still very comfortable. Our friends loved it!
David is a wonderful host and the complimentary wine and fruit were very welcome! Staying in this apartment is infinitely better than staying in a hotel and as a bonus, much better value.
The area itself seems a little more up-market now, but the stalwart restaurants like the Squat and Gobble and the Pork Store are still as ‘Haight’ as ever. We ate at both places, plus the Magnolia Brew Pub and a Puerto Rican restaurant (can’t remember the name…) close to Amoeba Records, which was also great. The expansion of the Haight Street Market is a great addition—excellent cheese and wine selection, plus a take-out deli and great produce, fish and butcher sections. For a great, unpretentious neighbourhood bar, the Golden Cane Cocktail Lounge is our favourite—friendly service, good beer selection and enough ‘busy-ness’ to feel like there is something going on.
Again, I highly recommend this property and we hope to return someday soon!
Myself, husband, 10 month old daughter and a friend stayed here for a week and had a fabulous time. Agree wholeheartedly with all the reviews regarding location (is literally 10 metres from the corner of Haight-Ashbury) and how friendly, welcoming and helpful David and Karen were both before we arrived and whilst we were there - including scoring a park for our rental car on our first day. It suited us perfectly as we were visiting friends who lived across the road from Golden Gate Park so we could walk to each others places within 10 minutes. Having a full bathroom, washing machine and kitchen with a 10 month old was also a major drawcard as opposed to staying in a hotel - and having both Haight Market and Wholefoods so close made everything easy. It honestly was like a home away from home and would not hesitate recommending this property to anyone. The only challenge we found was the staircase however we should have spoken to David prior to us arriving about arranging a gate for our little one as she was very much on the move when we were there. It just meant we had to be careful and contain her to the living area - wasn't a problem though as we were rarely in the apartment while she was awake! Location wise we absolutely love the Haight Ashbury area with all the shopping, food and ease of public transport at your doorstep.
