About this property

A Beach House at Piha - beachfront romantic hideaway, prime South Piha Beach.

Tucked away in the best location at the most popular end of New Zealand's most popular surf beach. With ever-changing panoramic view of ocean, beach, and rugged coastline and a magic atmosphere. Beautiful summer or winter. An idyllic romantic retreat for 1-2, family getaway for up to 6 (with overflow sleeping up to 16, weather permitting), a picturesque and photogenic setting for events.

Just a few steps onto the long beach of soft fine sand, the best surfing spot straight in front, patrolled swimming a stone's throw away (weekends in winter), and wonderful bush walks through spectacular scenery to lookouts, waterfalls, swimming holes and other natural wonders. Entertain in style on the huge deck to the sound of the ocean; or just relax and watch the world go by.

The house is orientated to the weather: shaded by the gracious ancient Pohutukawa trees in summer.

Sheltered from almost all wind, facing the sun in winter, toast marshmallows and yourself in front of a roaring fire by the roaring ocean, after a dip, a surf, a hike through our safe native bush and over the cliffs, canyoning, exploring the beach, a dinner party, or a night out meeting the locals... with our selection of trashy novels, jigsaws and board games, on demand TV, or watch the brave surfers ,or if you are lucky, storms rage over the ocean. Peaceful, wild, energizing and inspiring, Piha is magic in winter.

With a well set up kitchen (including basic condiments), outdoor furniture, "BBQ with a view", air conditioning and open fireplace, fresh herbs and lemons in the garden most of the year (grounds sand, grass and mature native trees), books and games, you can arrive and enjoy.

"There is excellent casual dining and takeaways (including organic) at 4 bar/restaurants an easy stroll along the beach or up the road. The Piha store has delicious home baking and gourmet takeaways (as well as essentials you may have forgotten).

There is a funky art gallery with quality art to suit every budget, surf board manufacture and hire shops with fashions and souvenirs, a library and post office, and a native plant nursery. Surfing lessons available. There are social events throughout the year.

One of the early batches built in Piha, this is our family holiday home, not a hotel: unique, quirky, unfussy, a bit rustic.

We offer substantial weekly and monthly discounts: enter dates to view."

♦ COVID NOTES: Our house is available during level four lockdown, what better way to spend a lockdown than on holiday at the beach! If you want to book in advance, to stop anyone else from booking, then are unable or unwilling to use it due to lockdowns or any other reason, our cancellation policy applies to compensate us for the loss of other bookings you have blocked. If you are worried about cancelling, you can get travel insurance, or take your chances that our house will be available and book the day before. :)
♦ The basement is not included in the sleeping for 12. It is rough, can be damp in wet weather, and could flood in extreme weather conditions. It can be used in good weather for overflow sleeping or as an alternative to the futon couches in the living room. Use at your own risk, please do not complain about it!

Location is everything
Very comfortable and well equipped bach especially proven with wild weather we had with constant rain for 3 days, which still resulted a lovely stay at Piha on the Beach. Can only imagine what it’s like with good weather! We were lucky enough to have our dog with us but had to take for walks only on North Piha beach as Stu Piha right out front is a reserve. Only wish to note the upstairs bunk room is a cupboard off the main bedroom so best for smaller kids under 13yrs perhaps, not suited for older teens as no airflow and right next to parents - we had our teens sleep on the couch futons instead. Had a great time and enjoyed the property best we could with bad weather.

Beautiful well-equipped beachfront Bach
Fantastic hostess Vicki made our stay stress free. Amazing views of Piha from the deck. This wonderful well-equipped property was a fantastic base to attend a family wedding in the Piha area as lockdown restrictions eased. Thoroughly recommend this beautiful beachfront property with spectacular views.

Host profile image
I have been hosting since 1999, I love people enjoying our family holiday home when we aren't! It's too beautiful to keep to ourselves.

Why they chose this property

Piha... it's magic. Discovered by accident, never forgotten. The roar of the ocean. The clean pure air and environment. Surfing lessons, and international surf competitions. Canyoning, tennis, bowls. Walking for miles along the soft sand, beachcombing for the perfect tiny purple Piha shells, exploring the rock pools; or through the benign natural bush to the lookout, to the gargoyles in the cliffs, the blowhole, waterfalls, the Blue Pool, the Gap, the Keyhole, the Washing Machine.

The eccentric, arty, friendly locals. The brave surfers. It's energising and relaxing. Food for the soul.

What makes this property unique

It's a stunning, atmospheric house at the best location in Piha! The everchanging view. Watching storms over the ocean from the fireside with the doors open, in winter. Sunbathing on the roof. Entertaining on the deck, sheltered from the prevailing south-westerly wind, a lovely microclimate even on cold windy days. Swinging in the hammock under the pohutukawas covered in a sea of red flowers. The barbecue with a view, with fresh herbs and salads from the garden. Lemonade from the lemon tree. Sleeping with the sound of the ocean, waking to the sound of the native wood pigeons, bellbirds, tuis, fantails and many other birds, showering in pure rainwater. Coffee or cocktails lazing on the warm sand dune outside before strolling up the beach to brunch, dinner or drinks at the excellent restaurants. Or alfresco on the deck.

Full of wonderful history, our house was built by a local philanthropist with shipped in materials, before there was a road, since extended. Author Maurice Shadbolt lived here in the 1970s, and the Fresh Squeezed surfboards were made and sold in our garage in the 1980s. Just about everyone in Piha slept in the boatshed loft in those days.
