About this property

Beachfront Corner Unit With Panoramic Views, Peaceful Beach, Kid Friendly Surf!

PLEASE NOTE: There is ongoing construction happening at Pats At Punaluu that effects the entire property. This construction is likely to be going on at least until the end of 2023. This may result in last minute changes to parking arrangements, etc. So please make sure to check in with your greeter prior to your arrival to verify current conditions. Thanks for your patience!

The Short Version: A studio that has been converted to provide a more private 1 bedroom, 1 full bathroom experience with a Full Kitchen, 1 Queen Sized bed in bedroom, and 2 day beds in front room. Enjoy the ridiculously amazing views from this 6th floor corner unit of both the ocean and the mountains.

There is no better place to recharge your biological battery than the Windward side of the island of Oahu – that’s the opposite side of the island from Honolulu. The pace on the windward side is slower, you might call it Hawaiian Country Living. You don’t need to send your son or daughter down to the beach to stake your claim to a 4 foot by 4 foot section of sand. You won’t find yourself discovering that your hotel room has a view of the hotel across the street. No vendors are going to hand you fliers for one of thousands of tourist traps. You won’t find shoulder to shoulder crowds virtually everywhere you try to go. On the windward side, you leave all that behind.

Over on this side of the island, you are going to find the kind of Hawaiian Experience that most people dream of. Soothing trade winds, the occasional tropical rain fall, clean and crowd free beaches all accompanied by the tune of the surf. After all, you are going to a tropical island. Why stay in what is basically the same city you left, just plopped down on the leeward side of Oahu? You want that tropical experience – and that is what this unit delivers!

The Beach : If you are going to visit a tropical island, you want the beach, right? Well, you got it. This property is located right on the water. All that there is between you and dipping your toes in the pacific is about 50 feet of lawn and sand and a 6 story ride in an elevator! We could have cut the time down by installing a zip line from your lanai to the beach, but the homeowners association would not allow it. Party poopers.

Protected Coastline : A mile or so offshore is a reef. This makes the beach nice and calm – perfect for swimming, snorkeling or just enjoying the warm tropical waters – particularly for younger children who might not be ready to take on the typical Hawaiian surf. You can swim out and observe the sea life that swims just feet from the beach. Heck, for a long way out you can walk!

The View : What about when it’s time to relax a little? Maybe you spent your first day enjoying a little too much sun and you need to get some relief for that nasty sun burn. That should not mean you cannot enjoy the reason you came to this tropical paradise – right? From this corner unit on the 6th floor – you have the widest and most sweeping view possible of not only the beach as it stretches off to the horizon to the north and the south, you also get a great view of those majestic Hawaiian mountain ranges. All from the comfort of your lanai (that’s what they call a balcony in Hawaii). So take a seat and continue to enjoy the view – right from the condo – all 270 degrees of it!

The Surf : Okay, so maybe you are not the kind of vacationer who likes to hang out in the room – or even stay in any one place too long. If you are the more active type, or an experienced surfer, you can enjoy all that Hawaii's North Shore has to offer. Yes, we are talking about THAT North Shore. You know, the one that has been immortalized and celebrated in movies, Beach Boys songs and professional surfing events for decades! You are just about 30 minutes away from the best the North Shore has to offer! Not an experienced surfer? No worries, there are some great locals who teach surfing classes near the North Shore!

Accommodates 4 : Let’s take a second to talk about what “Accommodate” means. For me, that means being able to eat, sleep and relax in comfort. You are not going to find any futons or couches that unfold into a “bed”. There is one queen and two twin sized day beds. The two twin beds also serve as couches during the day. Nothing finishes off a great day at Hanauma Bay or the Polynesian Cultural Center better than a good nights sleep – so I make sure you have comfortable beds to come home to. You like your bed softer? I also have additional foam cushions you can use on the day beds in case that is your thing.

The Layout : The condo was originally set up as a studio, but has been modified so that there is a bedroom area that is separated from the living room by the kitchen. It’s an open floor plan to allow for air flow, so there is no door separating the bedroom area. There is one bathroom. For your comfort, there are also two ceiling fans installed to help keep things cool.

Kitchen : The kitchen has everything you need to prepare your daily meals. There are two supermarkets near by where you can stock up on whatever you would like for your stay. It includes an electric cook top, oven, sink with garbage disposal, coffee maker, microwave oven, toaster, blender and all the cookware, glasses, plates and bowls you are likely to need. There is no dishwasher, so those you will need to wash by hand. There is also a dining table that accommodates 4 easily. The kitchen is a utilitarian affair – but it gets the job done!

Television and DVD player : A television with basic local cable is provided, including a DVD player for you to play any movies you may have brought along. If you have children, you know how handy this will be during your down time. I recently upgraded the TV, so now you an also use your Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, YouTube... and tons of others - account to enjoy in the unit. Just remember to log out before you leave!

Some gear for the fun! : I try to keep a decent selection of useful items for your visits to the beach. This includes fins, snorkels, masks, sand chairs, buckets and shovels for sand castles – maybe even a boogie board or two. For any other gear you might want to acquire, there are stores nearby where you will be able to find what you need. UPDATE: After about a year now, I am finding that more items go missing than I expected. So I cannot guarantee the availability of any of the gear. I restock whenever I visit, but I cannot guarantee how long the items remain available. UPDATED UPDATE: I love my guests! I was recently at the unit and found not only just about all the gear I had last added, but also found that guests had acquired MORE stuff and left it for future guests. You guys are awesome!

Destinations to choose from! : Oahu has a great deal to offer. You can visit the Polynesian Cultural Center located just a few minutes up the road to the north. Turn toward the south and you can visit Kualoa Ranch for horse back riding, zip lining, ATV riding, nature tours and tons more – they also made Jurassic Park and other movies on their 4000 acre property. If you really want to sample the crowded and more tourist focused side of the island, Waikiki is just about an hours drive away. There really are tons of options.

Washer/Dryer : A washer and dryer are included so that you can visit with a minimum of luggage! When I am visiting, I usually just bring a single carry on with only 2 or 3 days worth of what I need. Being able to do the laundry while you are there just makes traveling that much easier!

Secured Building : The building where this condo is located provides key pass access only. So if you want to use the elevators or access the stair wells, you have to have the security dongle to do so. This gives an added level of security and provides some peace of mind.

What This Unit Is Not: The photos and description make it clear what this unit is, but I want to make sure you know what it is not. You are not going to find granite counter tops or cabinets made from the rarest teak woods and the finest flooring. Everything works, but the unit is utilitarian. If what makes a vacation amazing for you is the finest of updated furniture and cabinets, you will want to select another unit. I like to think this unit delivers on the reason you came to Hawaii in the first place, amazing and expansive views with the sound of the surf to accompany it!

I started offering this as a vacation rental in July of 2015 and I have met some great folks over that time who have appreciated this unique getaway as much as I have! Since that first rental, I have taken feedback from guests and updated the flooring by removing the carpeting and installing tile. I want to thank those of you who have chosen to vacation at my place - particularly those that have done it more than once! In Feb of 2019, after feedback from my guests, I upgraded the TV so folks could "Netflix and chill". So please do provide feedback, I listen and do what I can.

Expect to get what you pay for
We just spent 9 days at this property. The check in process was easy and the manager was very accommodating. The views are gorgeous, however the previous reviews were pretty accurate in regards to the condition of the condo. We were not expecting anything fancy and we were fine with that, however everything is really old and feels very dirty. The couch cushions are ripped and stained/dirty. We bought bleach to wash all the dishes and counters as they didnt feel clean and were slimy. The curtains are stained and dirty and sleeping on the pull out bed I stared at a super dirty and stained lamp shade before bed. The fan in the living room was broken, but the manager did offer to fix it. Also the door banged continuously all night with the wind. The back bedroom hears a lot of traffic noise, however the living area hears the waves which is beautiful. Overall this was a nice place to stay, nice location out of the hustle of honolulu, but this place could really be amazing with a proper cleaning, a coat of paint and a little bit of TLC.

About the host

Hosted by Robert

Host profile image
I am a California boy, but my sister has lived on Oahu since college and my parents and grandparents moved to the island in the late 1980s. They all lived at Pats - where this unit is. So our family has tended to spend a lot of time in Hawaii. I have never been able to find a way to live there myself. I finished college at San Jose State University and aside from a few periods - have lived in California all my life.

Why they chose this property

When most of my family was living in Hawaii, they lived in the building where this unit is. It was great to have to travel to a place like this to visit the parents and grandparents! Eventually, most of them moved back, but as a family, we wanted to hold on to at least one place so that we could return as often as we could. Maybe I developed an odd attraction for this place, but I have been lucky enough to travel to some of the most amazing places in the world. But I still return to my little home on the beach in Punaluu! It only takes about 3 days for all the stress and weight of the world to melt away here. If you are like me, you love the tradewinds. My absolute favorite place is that corner of the lanai where you can see the mountains and the beach - when the trade winds blow, you get an amazing breeze in that spot - it feels like the wind is alive. It is impossible to describe, but completely engrossing. The sound of the surf is so soothing. If you are like me, you will end up sleeping outside on the Lanai or at least on one of the daybeds.

What makes this property unique

I suppose what makes this place so unique is the view and the higher elevation. End units are amazingly rare. It is even more rare for those to end up as vacation rentals! I am sure you will want to fill your vacation with all that there is to see and do. But I tell you, I just arrive, stock up at the grocery store and stay right there for weeks at a time if I can!
