I, along with my brothers, purchased this lake home from a friend in 1991 as a family cabin. As time went on, I bought out my brothers and began to rent it out. Many improvements have been made. I am in my 60s and hope to retire in time and live part time in the lake home. I have been in the trucking business since I bought a truck at age 21. I have 3 grown kids and live in Florida and the Twin Cites. I ride peddle bikes and my Harley for fun and exercise.
Darby Walbon purchased this cabin in 1991
The cabin sits on a level over-size lot with a sandy beach where my children enjoyed playing when they were young. The cabin is roomy and dressed in 12' knotty pine. With a kitchen, diningroom, livingroom and all season porch on the main level there is plenty of room for large groups to socialize. I have always found it to be a perfect relaxing get-away.
The 4 seasons are so distinctive! It's great to experience the change of seasons at the lake. It's like a new place 4 times a year. The cabin faces west so each night a new and different sunset awaits you.
We stayed there 2 years in a row.
First year no game room in the boat house and a limited dock for mooring our boats.
Second year no electricity to charge our boats. No boat house use again.
The gas grille was locked up in the garage.
The unbelievable kicker was the dock had been pulled except for one section.
They took our money without providing services that were supposed to come with the rental.
We had been staying for 3 nights at the end of September.
Also on the second year the cleaning lady wanted us out a day early and we had it rented for a third night.
It took me a while to write this but the other 7 guys said I had to.
Sorry but there is no way that we could recommend this place.
It was clean but their obligation to provide what was to come with the cabin is misleading.
Would never give a recommendation to stay there.
Pretty hard to tie up 3 boats.
We arrived and the housekeeper was just finishing up and was very helpful with where to get groceries and fishing license and bait. The cabin was just as described. With the open windows and fans the cabin was very comfortable throughout the day with the lake breeze.
The only problem we had during the stay was the pontoon boat broke down. Darby was very apologetic and worked with us to make our stay very enjoyable. We were able to continue fishing throughout the week. And the fishing was great.
Lots of room for everybody and the game selection was fantastic. My kids learned how to play cribbage and the men learned how to play apples to apples.
Highly recommend if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful and relaxing vacation.
We've stayed in this cozy cabin on many occasions and I can't wait to go back. There's plenty of room for our kids and grandkids to enjoy the fun with us, but it is also a relaxing and romantic getaway. From the amazing sunsets, great fishing and pontoon boat to snowmobiling through the beautiful Savana Park Trails and stopping at the local establishments along the way, we always leave relaxed and refreshed.
The owners, Darby and Karen are great! They always make sure the cabin is clean and well kept and helpful whenever we have needed something. I would recommend this cabin to anyone, especially if you are looking for a place for a family reunion or family getaway on Big Sandy Lake.
We have stayed at this beautiful, peaceful property numerous times. I love waking up to the sound of the loons. The sunrises are gorgeous.
The sitting room is spacious and enjoyable for fun conversations with those you love.
We have put several puzzles together while enjoying the lakeview on the enclosed porch. If not in the mood for a puzzle, games are abundant.
The lake is wonderful and inviting to all kinds of activities. A must stay for family and friends.
We organize a skiing and Scrabble weekend here annually -- it's a great place. Darby, the owner is communicative and responsible -- nice guy. The house is clean, nicely but comfortably furnished -- the individual sections recline in the couches! and the fireplace is great -- and has enough space for people to hole up and read while others hang out together. The lake is well populated but very pretty, and the cabin is close to Remote Lake Solitude Area for beautiful cross county. (FYI the ping pong/pool table had been moved outside to the unheated little storage house in the winter last time we were here -- otherwise it'd be 5 stars instead of 4 :)
A comfortable lake home! Very quiet and restful. The pontoon is wonderful for touring the lake and fishing. Lots of games for kids, the TV was great.....we got to watch the Twins! My son and grandson very much enjoyed the pool table/ping pong table! We had a great week!
