Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 4, pool, wireless broadband

Casa da Pedra is a traditional Madeiran house in the village of Arco da Calheta.

The locals reckon that Arco da Calheta has the best micro-climate of all! And it’s a quiet location . The house has two bedrooms, one with an en-suite bathroom. Downstairs is one big room which provides lounge, dining and kitchen areas. The walls are very thick stone – they are over 150 years old, part of the original cottage. This keeps the house cool in the summer, and warm in the winter.

Outside there is a swimming pool and south facing terrace. The pool is about 5 metres by 8 metres; the depth is about 1.5 metres, solar heated

There are two bedrooms upstairs. Both open on to the balcony, which faces south, giving stunning views over the sea and surrounding mountains. The first bedroom has an en-suite shower room, and there is also a family bathroom.

The shops are a short walk away but in case you arrive late in the day, ask about a welcome pack

There is a garden below the swimming pool, with a wooden house (Casa da Madeira). If the owners are staying there they may use the pool (don't worry, we are quite nice really!). You are welcome to pick fruit from the trees in the garden - these include: avacado, passion fruit, and some young citrus trees.

Pool refurbishment: The pool was refurbished in December 2008, so you will have an even better swimming experience!

Previous guests may be pleased to learn that the parking area has been altered to make parking much easier. In addition in December 2012 an electric hob was installed to replace the gas one. For users of the high tech shower who may have experienced a cheeky coolness to the water, happy news. The gas boiler which supplied hot (well almost) has been replaced with a solar water system. This is supported by an electric immersion heater. So, cold showers by choice only, now!

The house has been inspected by the local authority tourist board and is licenced for letting

Guestbook comments from the owner

We wish to express our thanks for your contribution to a wonderful holiday we had on the island of Madeira. The house in Arco da Calheta was just perfect. It was very clean and tidy and had everything we needed for a self catering stay. It was an ideal location to base ourselves for exploring the island and the swimming pool was a real bonus. I would also like to thank Ezequiel and his staff for organising the taxi pickup from the port and the car hire. We will have no hesitation recommending your house to anyone wishing to visit Madeira in the future.

Nice house with swimming pool very suitable for a family stay

  • 4 of 5

Spacious house, very suitable for a stay with kids. The swimming pool is great. With a nice view and relatively close by car to calheta beach.

Reception by a local friendly agency, which brought us to the house .

We recommend this house if you want to stay near Calheta on a good location.

Well catered for, clean and comfortable. Some niggly minor details, e.g. Hot water switch and cooker operation, could well have been eliminated by caretaker at the start. Our little Opel Corsa did struggle getting up the approach inclines with the full load.

On the whole Carole was very helpful and property is as described!

Owner's Response: we are pleased this guest enjoyed the house. sorry about the cooker and the hot water switch we will add instruction to the house guide. Most guests do not need the hot water switch as the solar generally does a good job. Unfortunately most car hire firms rent out small engine cars which make the Madeira roads with four adults on board a bit of a challenge. the hills are amazing

Wow, what a location.

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely old traditional house in the centre of the old village of Arco de Calheta. Both bedrooms have a superb view and a wide balcony with table and chairs. Kitchen has everything provided albeit maybe a little bit of an inconvenient layout. Two doors open onto a patio and gorgeous swimming pool. The agent is really helpful, nothing is too much trouble.

It is beautifully located to explore the far west of Madeira and a number of great restaurants in Calheta, Madelana and Prazeres

We would have no hesitation in returning to this lovely home.

Relaxing Maderia

  • 5 of 5

This holiday was a total rest for us. Casa Pedro had everything we needed and comfortable. Lovely pool and we were blessed with the weather until last two days. Ate out five times, very good pizzeria in village. Excellent food in nearby Calhetta. We did not hire a car, used taxis, very cheap, even gave us a hand of bananas. Neighbour very kind and supplied us with fruit on a daily basis. Ezekiel, the agent very informative and helpful. Thankyou Carole, for letting us stay.

A wonderful place to spend a holiday

  • 5 of 5

Casa da Pedra is a wonderful place to spend a holiday, it was our first visit to Madeira. We plan to return some time soon and when we do i'd love to stay at Casa da Pedra again. The cottage is clean and tidy the views amazing, to wake in a morning and be able to lie in bed and view the sea is something special and will live long in the memory. I have to agree with previous reviews, the neighbours are lovely.

Tip if you're thinking of coming to Madeira hire a car, buy a map and a Rough Guide and explore it's stunningly beautiful place..

Owner's Response: We are delighted you and your family enjoyed your stay. Our neighbours do their best to make sure our guests have a lovely time they are very special people. We fell in love with Madeira in 1998 and in many ways it hasn't changed. except the swiss cheese tunnels through the mountains which make getting around really speedy. But as our guest says, a car and a map and see the very best the Island has to offer, try the wigggly roads. Geoff is an enthusiastic driver and loves the roads.

Fantastic traditional cottage with amazing pool

  • 5 of 5

We arrived in Arco da Calheta and were met with a warm smile by Ezekiel (the local agent) who showed us to the cottage. The road to the cottage is narrow and not for the faint hearted but after a few days was much easier to navigate.

The accommodation is great and bigger than I'd expected. It was well stocked with all the essentials. The DVD player packed in on day 1 and by day 3 had been replaced which was great service. The cottage is well maintained and Terese does a great job keeping it clean.

The pool is fabulous, the only one issue was that the levels of chlorine may have been too high (but rather that than not high enough).

The neighbours were lovely too and the kids came and joined in a swim with our boys.

Madeira is a lovely island with lots to keep everyone entertained. I'd totally recommend Casa da Pedra to anyone (may not be suitable for family with baby it elderly if find spiral staircase a problem).

There is a fantastic pizzeria a five minute drive away plus the brick barbeque by the pool is an added bonus.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased our guests found everything suited them. We like to think that it is how we would like to find it if we were the guests. We are very lucky with our agent, Teresa and our neighbours. When we first saw the house we fell in love with it and love to share it. Our grandchildren have been staying there with us since they were babies and we found ways to keep them safe. We do agree about the spiral staircase which is why we say not suitable for disabled. However age is no barrier, our father comes too when we go to Madeira and he's 91.

Casa da Pedra is in the village of Arco da Calheta, situated on the south coast of Madeira, about half an hour’s drive from Funchal. The south coast has the most sun and the least rain on the island. The locals reckon that Arco da Calheta has the best micro-climate of all! It’s a quiet location but in the centre of the village. It is a perfect place for taking your rest between lavada walks

The village is on a hill over-looking the ocean and with views of the surrounding cliffs and mountains. The hill/mountain to the left of the house is famed as an international paragliding place. Check out this site for more information on this exciting sport. There are local shops and cafes within an easy walk. The village boasts a new leisure centre and children's plaly park. The beach and marina at Calheta is a ten minute drive. The marina offers private hire deep sea fishing. There are several restaurants within easy driving distance
