Lisbon City Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

What are our famous guests saying? (Hint: Please read the testimonials on our VisitingPortugal website.)

Location, location, location. Only 3 minutes from the Rossio -- Lisbon's main plaza -- yet far from the noise and panhandlers in the Bairro Alto/Chiado.

Step directly from your ancient cobblestone lane into this private, sunlight-filled, 19th-century home with its charming view of the Igreja do Carmo, Lisbon's soaring monument to the 1755 earthquake.

Casa Travessa provides easy access to shops, restaurants, and transportation... while hidden away on a quiet residential street. Compact and cozy with an airy, open floor plan, Casa Travessa is the ideal base for a couple traveling alone or with a child.

Like our nearby flagship property, Casa Villa Serra (VRBO #30177) which was showcased on the Fine Living Channel's 'Around the World in 80 Homes,' Casa Travessa features hand-stitched Arraiolos rugs, custom-made Portuguese furnishings, and local artwork and pottery.

With its private entrance, Casa Travessa feels more like a house than an apartment as you step directly into its well-stocked little kitchen. The bedroom has a double-size bed and the living room provides a sofa/trundle bed which easily converts to two comfortable twin beds. The bedroom bookshelves are stocked with books and games for young and old alike, perfect for relaxing at the end of a busy day.

About Austin, Jordan & Deb Kleber

In June 2001, we kissed Seattle good-bye and moved to our family's ancestral Portugal to work with Habitat for Humanity/Portugal. Soon afterward, in an attempt to protect ourselves from the crashing dollar, we diversified into €uro-zone real estate... and we couldn't be more pleased with the result: sharing our love of the Portuguese people and culture with guests from around the world has been a delight. We now have five historically-protected homes in our little medieval neighborhood... right in the middle of town, yet oh-so-quiet and charming! (Just 3 - 8 minutes from Lisbon's main plaza, the Rossio.) Walk everywhere from here; or stay home and relax on your sunny terrace. Many thanks to all our guests for the support and encouragement. We look forward to seeing you again someday soon. Until then, Godspeed.

Why Austin, Jordan & Deb Kleber chose Lisbon City

Our Lisbon homes are located in an historic area, protected by the Portuguese government because of its unique value; the exteriors look just as they did in the 19th century, with even the paint color regulated to ensure authenticity. Most of the buildings in our Historic Preservation neighborhood were built in the 1500-1800s and all our properties retain their old-world flavor. Nowhere in this neighborhood will you find McVillas with plate-glass windows... instead, prepare to step back in time.

What makes this apartment unique

Casa Travessa is truely adorable, a cozy base from which to enjoy the charms and delights of Lisbon, whose center you can literally see from your living room window. Yet the neighbourhood itself is so quiet, you'll almost forget you're in the city at all. It's the best of both worlds!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Deb!

Thank you for a great welcome and stay in Lisbon.

Your guided tour was invaluable to get us started and your tip for take away roast chicken was delicious!

We had a very relaxing stay which was exactly what we had hoped for.

The apartment is very homey, comfortable and relaxing. We love its natural and tasteful decor and its location set within an idyllic Lisbon neighborhood of narrow picturesque streets is very unique and memorable.

It is also perfectly located close to the Rossio and everything is easily accessible.

Your knowledge of the area, history and architectural insights enriched our stay. You are very professional and hospitable and we would love to return some day. Perhaps we'll bring the children next time... many thanks -

Wonderful historic-district stay

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully modernized yet charming two-level living space (the bedroom and bathrom make up the lower level). Austin was truly helpful and got us to excellent restaurants and local stores. Highly recommend for couples as well as for couples with children. Good Wi-Fi, TV, fado music CD collection, and house library (even chidren's books and games!).

Casa Santana, a marvelous place

  • 5 of 5

As well-seasoned travelers (interpret that as you will), one of the first things that impressed us about this apartment was the obvious thought the owners put into making guests feel welcomed and comfortable. I truly can't think of anything we didn't have that we needed.

The way we were greeted was the first clue that this would be a great place to be; there was a bottle of wine and some starter food items waiting for us. One of the owners, Jordan, met us, gave us the keys, walked us through the apartment to explain things and answer questions, and then - a true bonus - took us for a walk in the neighborhood to show us where things are and get us up to speed on life in Lisbon, including restaurants that were as good as he said.

The beautiful apartment is in a perfect location for accessing a number of Lisbon attractions, and very near the variety of transportation alternatives available. A 15-20 minute walk in any direction takes you to marvelous neighborhoods. The apartment is beautifully furnished and decorated, the furniture, including the bed, is very comfortable, and all modern amenities are available.

We offer only two cautions for potential renters: 1) the walk from the Rossio (public square) to the apartment includes a steep section of pavement and stairs - very doable for able-bodied folks; 2) with the windows open in the evening, all of the sounds from the very busy city below are in the apartment; this could be annoying to some people.

The owners live nearby, and are very responsive. There was excellent communication with us prior to and during our arrival. On the morning we left, Austin came by, we had a nice chat, she ordered a taxi for us, and made certain the driver knew where we were going.

Overall, we very highly recommend this apartment, and the folks.

Austin was extremely helpful with all my questions & concerns. She met us upon arrival and showed us the neighborhood. The apartment was situated close to metro & train stations. Washer/dryer, internet, dishwasher were all available in the unit. Day of departure she met us & called a cab for us. We were quite pleased with our stay. Thank you Austin!

Ditch the hotel and stay in this apartment

  • 5 of 5

Great alternative to staying in a hotel. The apartment is clean, well-stocked, and has all the amenities you would expect. Austin is fantastic. She's warm, friendly and is accessible should you need anything. We mainly texted with her but she's a phone call away as well.

You'll get a few "insider" tips on where to shop and dine. Definitely check out the restaurants she recommends. It's enough to get you going and exploring. The apartment is in an older neighborhood but is very modern inside. The best of both worlds. There's a great little grocery store just up the hill to get everything you need for your stay.

The apartment is conveniently located to all major shopping, dining, and transportation options. We spent about ten days and it's very nice having both two metro stops and the train station within a 5-10 min. walk. Be aware that the neighborhood sits up on a hill so it's a little steep. It's not bad but if you have a disability or difficulty walking just be aware.

My choice of this apt and the leases was fantastic. Apt is located in heart of Rossio, near all transportation, was clean , very well appointed. Was met by owner, who gave me a 30 min tour of the area with lots of great tips for dining, entertainment and sightseeing. Apt was fully stocked and owners went out of their way to make it very hospitable, incl. having bread, milk, coffee etc available for the first few nights stay. Lisboa is a terrific city, very much reminds me of San Francisco, great food, friendly people, and easy to walk and explore with the trams, buses, funiculars etc. Plan to return for a longer stay.

A great place in an excellent location

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent a week here. I was attending a professional conference but both my wife and I wanted to stay somewhere more interesting than the official conference hotels. This was a wonderful choice! The apartment itself was what we needed - clean and quiet, with an excellent wifi connection and with a useful small kitchen. It was a 5 minute walk for me to get to the Rossio Metro station and then maybe a 10 minute ride to my conference. But on top of all this - and very important - it was right in the center of historic Lisbon! It took only a few minutes to walk to a great variety of restaurants, historic sites, and shops. Much of the contents of our guidebook was within a 15 minute walk - and if we wanted to take tram, Metro, or bus to our destination, that was even closer. Neighbors were quiet and, when we saw them, friendly.

The owners were great: they answered all our questions, and in orienting us, anticipated a number of our needs (by suggesting local groceries, restaurants, and other necessities). And they did all this without being intrusive.

We had no unpleasant surprises. The few surprises we did have all amounted to this: the place was quieter (and nicer) than we expected, considering its central location.

The only things to be aware of are that it's in an older neighborhood, and is a very short (but very steep) walk from the central city. I wouldn't recommend it for people with walking problems, but . . . we're both over 60, and handled the climb just fine!

I'd stay here again - and will, if I get a chance to return to Lisboa!
