Peace, Privacy, Thousands Of Acres to Wander, Hunt, Sky, Fish, Ride And Hike On
About Ron Tobias
We are Ron and Candy Tobias. Candy was a fifth-grade school teacher in Anchorage, Alaska, and later in Bozeman, Montana. Ron was a natural history filmmaker for the Discovery Channel , Animal Planet, TLC, and National Geographic for sixteen years and the author of ten books of non-fiction. We realized our dream when we retired two years ago and bought the Krieg homestead in Philipsburg. Ron was born in Newark, N. J. and Candy was born in Detroit, but we're country people at heart and have lived in Montana for thirty years. You'll see us working every day doing our chores around the pens and barn every day.
Ron Tobias purchased this House in 2015
Why Ron Tobias chose Hall
We love this place for the same reasons people like coming here: a) location, b) privacy, c) access. Look at the pictures. Meadows, wetlands, a trout stream, and mountains with unimpeded views for miles. Ron no longer wears a watch (but Candy does). The rhythm of time is different here: the sun and the wind do most of the talking. Everyone watches the weather because moisture means good crops, fatter cattle, and if you're really lucky, an extra hay cutting. This is beef country. Ranchers are some of the most genuine people I know. As well as some of the most conniving, stab-in-back people you'll ever meet. What makes the culture here so essentially western is that people are what they are up front, for good or bad. Things may not always what they appear to be, but you learn to count on people as they learn to count on you.
What makes this House unique
As children, both Candy and Ron longed to go west and inevitably they did, and that's where they found each other and this place on Flint Creek. The benefits are spiritual. At a resort, people will ask you, "what do you want to do?" Here, no one asks you to do anything. People come to recharge their spiritual batteries; to take time to watch a bald eagle float on a riser in the sky above you or sit on the bank of an oxbow on Flint Creek and watch the cranes. If you're an outdoor person, this is heaven. Hunt, fish, ski, snowshoe, ride horses or 4-wheelers, bird, hike, explore, all as good as you can imagine. There's no paved road west of the cabin for sixty miles. Yet you're close enough to enjoy Philipsburg, (pop. 820) a feisty little town with "The World's Biggest Candy Store", great barbecue, a real soda fountain and lunch counter, and its own craft brewery. You can pan for sapphires from a local sapphire mine at Gem Mountain. The gravel is so rich you'll find small sapphires for sure. Our daughter Nancy found a 4.8 carat blue sapphire in one bag of gravel. As a former filmmaker, I got to travel the world extensively, and of all the places I'd rather live, this is it. Think Henry David Thoreau, Isaac Walton, Teddy Roosevelt, John J Audubon, John Burroughs, and Liver Eating Johnson. This is the best the West has to offer.

An excellent experience!
We had a terrific stay at the property. If you are looking to experience the beauty of Montana in a natural tranquil environment this is for you. From a great location, close to amenities, to fishing on the property it had it all. Roomy clean cabin, comfortable beds great support from owners and the friendliest animals we have ever seen.
Would highly recommend and will definitely revisit!
Beautiful property and house
Enjoyed a 10-day stay here. Rural setting, but only 10-15 min. drive into Phillipsburg and an hour into Missoula. House is roomy, comfortable, and stays cool during hot weather. Ron and Candy are excellent hosts.
Very comfortable. Fully appointed. We'd return. Easy access to Flint Creek.
Ron and Candy are very nice.
Beautiful property- very nice hosts!
Perfect for any getaway seeking quiet and great scenery. Thanks Ron and Candy for the welcome wine and muffins!
Great classic log cabin
This is a great location just outside Philipsburg. The cabin is a classic log cabin style in a remote environment. We see lots of wildlife everyday. Easy access to great fishing locations in the area!
Perfect for our family of 5
My family of 5 (2 adults and 3 children - ages 13, 11 and 9) loved staying in this log home - it is beautiful! The kids enjoyed the loft and were each able to have their own bedroom and space to play. The game table upstairs was a popular place for the kids. In addition, the kids really loved all of the animals. Ron and Candy were so gracious in allowing the kids to pet the animals.
The farm fresh eggs were also wonderful. We enjoyed cooking our meals in the well equipped kitchen and eating them out on the picnic table on the porch. There are hardly any bugs, which made being outside very enjoyable.
It is so private and peaceful! My husband and I loved fishing Flint Creek. It was fun to walk down to the creek and then walk up and down stream fly fishing. We caught a few larger trout and several small ones. Our kids liked driving their battery operated 4-wheelers to the river and playing in the creek.
We also just love Philipsburg and all of the fun family activities. We liked exploring the Granite Ghost Town outside of Philipsburg - the drive is so pretty. The kids love eating at Up in Smoke and then going to the Sweet Shop / Candy store. We also had so much fun digging for sapphires at Gem Mountain. We also liked driving past Gem Mountain and fishing the smaller mountain streams and having picnics with the kids. The cabin is decorated beautifully and is well stocked with games and books to read. Missoula is close by and a great place to visit, especially on Saturdays for the People's Market.
We definitely are looking forward to staying there again sometime. Our kids are missing the animals and are wishing we were going back this Fall. I would highly recommend this home. Ron and Candy are the perfect hosts and truly do respect your privacy, but are also there to help in any way they can.
If you're looking for a slick package of attractions, then this isn't for you. If you want to go to a place that's quiet and escape all the distractions and you enjoy nature, we're just for you, located in the heart of Flint Creek Valley.
