'Les Marronniers' (The Chestnut Trees) is an idyllic former farm set in the tranquil Creuse département of France's Southwestern Limousin region, a walking and cycling paradise along riversides and through beautiful woodland where nature is pretty much undisturbed. We are situated on the edge of a pretty hamlet within a short drive (or bike ride!) of local shops, restaurants and bars, yet with 7 acres of our own private gardens and peaceful meadows. The nearby villages of Crozant with its castle ruins, and Fresselines made famous by Monet, boast spectacular views of the Rivers Creuse and Sedelle. Lake Chambon with its safe sandy beaches, fishing, water-sports, and lakeside restaurants and bars is only 10 minutes away. There is a large equestrian centre open to the public the same distance in the other direction, and golf, tennis and flying are also catered for. The famous Brenne wildlife and bird sanctuary is less than an hour away
House Parties: We are happy to negotiate discounted rates to take the whole property for up to 17 people and for non-standard periods (outside of the peak summer season). We can help you to organise airport transfers, local transport, grocery and wine shopping, catering (in-house at Les Marronniers or in nearby restaurants), festive decorations, and special events such as sightseeing, boat trips, guided nature walks, horse-back treks, balloon and light aircraft flights, musical performances, theatre, etc. We will get the best local deals for you at cost - our own services come free with our compliments!
Getting Here: Limoges Airport is just 50 minutes away on the A20 motorway (Exit 28), and has frequent flights by Ryanair from Stansted, Nottingham (EMA), Manchester, Leeds or Bristol, by FlyBe from Southampton, by British Airways from Gatwick, and by Air France from other European cities. Car hire is available from the airport.
Journey time on the Eurostar from central London (Waterloo International) to Limoges is around 7 hours total.
If you prefer to drive, there are numerous motorway links from the Channel ports and Northern European countries to get you well South of Paris. From Orleans the A71, or from Tours the A85, both lead to the major interchanges at Vierzon, from where the A20 heads South past Châteauroux and on to Limoges – this section is toll-free, and usually traffic-free too
Swimming Pool, etc.: The 11 x 5 metre pool with Roman steps and built-in jacuzzi is surrounded by a spacious lawn and loungers. It is checked and cleaned frequently, and complies with the stringent French safety standards. There is also a full-size trampoline, barbecues, boules, and a large selection of bicycles (and safety helmets) for you to use at no extra charge. There is a library of books and DVDs, a games room and free WiFi broadband access.
Newly introduced regulations in France set strict safety standards for swimming pools. We are supportive of this initiative and will expect you to comply with the common-sense rules for the pool, as well as other facilities. We will explain these to you when you arrive (or you can request an advance copy).
To minimise the risk of injury, or of damage to the pool liner, glass and sharp objects are not permitted within the pool compound. We are pleased to provide plastic glasses and picnic equipment for your use.
'It's been a very memorable two weeks. We felt completely at home in this extremely comfortable and well-equipped house and gardens. We were very touched by the kindness, hard work, sensitivity and warm welcome from Chris and Susie. Thank you for all the extra touches - you really have thought of everything even WiFi which was an extra bonus. All enjoyed the area - special memories in Argenton, Gargilesse, the lac sailing and kayaking, and the stars on a couple of nights. Keep up the good work - you're doing a great job! Helen.'
'Oh, Chris and Susie, how could you? You have made one fatal error! Outside the site you should have put the sign: WARNING! Once here, you will never want to leave!!! Love, Bethanie (Age 13 - yep, stroppy teenager).'
'I love it! Thank you, au revoir. Dominic (Age 11).'

Guests are responsible for any damage they cause to our facilities, and we advise you to insure against possible liability for any major cost.
Having said that, we quite understand that minor accidents happen, and rather than hold a security deposit, we prefer to operate a gentlemen's agreement - we will only ask you to pay what it costs us.
We understand that HomeAway Holiday Rentals and Owners Direct will be charging guests a booking fee with effect from 31st May 2016. We do not agree with this idea, which appears to be a hidden extra. If you wish to avoid this levy, please either book before the end of May, or make a new enquiry direct with us at our own website www.theforgottenfrance.com.
Chris and Suzy made us feel very welcome ....our gite was perfect for us .,All ages were catered for ...swimming pool, games room,bikes,trampoline.,badminton....a rural location which was beautifully quiet , with lots of areas to explore ...medieval villages and fabulous rivers with safe beaches ....a truly fun relaxing holiday away from the crowd's....would definitely recommend.
We have just returned from a wonderfull 2 weeks in gite 3 at Les Marronniers. Chris & Susie were instantly the perfect gite hosts and made our stay really special. The gite itself was spotless & extremely comfortable. We have 3 young children & Chris and Susie were so helpful supplying all those bulky extra items you don't want to travel with. The pool was a big hit with all of us & gardens gave ample opportunity for running around.
We made good use of our private outdoor area especially as each gite has its own BBQ which was lovely. I shall very much miss my morning croissant delivaries!
The local area was beautiful & there are plenty of things to do for all ages.
A big thank you to Chris & Susie for sharing your beautiful home with use. A fab holiday!
We spent two weeks here. Putting the rather poor weather aside, they were among the best weeks this year! Chris & Sue were so friendly, the site is so amazing and the whole area so interesting - awesome. We were five people in Gite #3: Perfect - from breakfast to dinner: Nice weather sitting outside and enjoying the sight or (rain) sitting inside and playing cards - we loved it. The pool was a great plus - I spent hours with my son there.
Wow. Nestled in the countryside a gorgeous gite, lovely pool and gardens, all mod cons, wonderful setting, and fabulously welcoming owners. Pool paraphernalia, bikes, games room, wifi, everything you could possibly need. Even bread delivered every morning. Will definitely be coming again, highly recommended.
Went to Les Maronniers for a one week photography workshop. We were picked up from the airport & driven around to the various sites which all went very smoothly. The food was a delight with plenty of wine, though after a hard days photography we weren't able to drink that much. Chris & Susie were extremely hospitable and made us feel very welcome. Accomodation was very comfortable & clean. There are a good number of photographic sites around so making for a full week. I felt it was good value for money and I would recommend it.
Chris and Susie made us welcome from the moment we arrived. The accommodation is of a high standard, very comfortable and relaxing.
The food and wine was exceptionally good; and Chris's logistics were first class, taking us to beautiful locations that could easily be reached by people of average fitness.
Both Chris and Susie are very friendly, and exceptional company.
We have no hesitation in recommending Les Marronniers photographic holidays.
We are just two hours from the chateaux of the Loire valley, in the beautiful rural Creuse département (23) of the Limousin region, close to the borders of Indre (36) and Haute-Vienne (87). All three départements contain a wealth of attractions for every taste, from the simple pleasures of quiet country life to the lively nightlife and student scene in the regional capital, Limoges.
Within a very short distance, you will find breathtaking scenery along the banks of the River Creuse; cultural sites with strong local connections to George Sand, Chopin, Monet, Guillaumin and the other impressionists; historical towns, chateaus, ancient churches, and fortifications dating back to the days of the crusaders and even earlier; tennis, water-sports, fishing, horse-riding, nature walks, and farm visits; lake-side restaurants and bars, outdoor cafes, gourmet auberges, a state-of-the-art discotheque (4 miles from us - well out of earshot!) and even a “cottage pub”.
The Tour de France is returning to Limoges in 2016, stages on the 5th and 6th July.
Other Activities: Bird-watching, sailing, microlighting, flying
