Our two gîtes are side-by-side modernised stone cottages created from what was once the second farmhouse at 'Les Marronniers', and retain many period features, such as exposed timbers and stonework. A thick stone partition wall prevents any noise passing between them. Each has a character of its own, but both are set up for comfortable holiday living for a family of four, with electric radiator heating for off-season lets (but we have never used it between April and October).

'Les Marronniers' (The Chestnut Trees) is an idyllic former farm set in the tranquil Creuse département of France's Southwestern Limousin region, a walking and cycling paradise along riversides and through beautiful woodland where nature is pretty much undisturbed. We are situated on the edge of a pretty hamlet within a short drive (or bike ride!) of local shops, restaurants and bars, yet with 7 acres of our own private gardens and peaceful meadows. The nearby villages of Crozant with its castle ruins, and Fresselines made famous by Monet, boast spectacular views of the Rivers Creuse and Sedelle. Lake Chambon with its safe sandy beaches, fishing, water-sports, and lakeside restaurants and bars is only 10 minutes away. There is a large equestrian centre open to the public the same distance in the other direction, and golf, tennis and flying are also catered for. The famous Brenne wildlife and bird sanctuary is less than an hour away.
House Parties: We are happy to negotiate discounted rates to take the whole property for up to 17 people and for non-standard periods (outside of the peak summer season). We can help you to organise airport transfers, local transport, grocery and wine shopping, catering (in-house at Les Marronniers or in nearby restaurants), festive decorations, and special events such as sightseeing, boat trips, guided nature walks, horse-back treks, balloon and light aircraft flights, musical performances, theatre, etc. We will get the best local deals for you at cost - our own services come free with our compliments!
Getting Here: Limoges Airport is just 50 minutes away on the A20 motorway (Exit 28), and has frequent flights by Ryanair from Stansted, Nottingham (EMA), Manchester, Leeds or Bristol, by FlyBe from Southampton, by British Airways from Gatwick, and by Air France from other European cities. Car hire is available from the airport.
Journey time on the Eurostar from central London (Waterloo International) to Limoges is around 7 hours total.
If you prefer to drive, there are numerous motorway links from the Channel ports and Northern European countries to get you well South of Paris. From Orleans the A71, or from Tours the A85, both lead to the major interchanges at Vierzon, from where the A20 heads South past Châteauroux and on to Limoges – this section is toll-free, and usually traffic-free too.
Swimming Pool, etc.: The 11 x 5 metre pool with Roman steps and built-in jacuzzi is surrounded by a spacious lawn and loungers. It is checked and cleaned frequently, and complies with the stringent French safety standards. There is also a full-size trampoline, barbecues, boules, and a large selection of bicycles (and safety helmets) for you to use at no extra charge. There is a library of books and DVDs, a games room and free WiFi broadband access.
France sets strict safety standards for swimming pools. We are supportive of this initiative and will expect you to comply with the common-sense rules for the pool, as well as other facilities. We will explain these to you when you arrive (or you can request an advance copy).
To minimise the risk of injury, or of damage to the pool liner, glass and sharp objects are not permitted within the pool compound. We are pleased to provide plastic glasses and picnic equipment for your use.

Beautiful, quiet spot!
We had a lovely time in Gite 2.
Chris & Sue are very welcoming, friendly and very helpful.
The place is absolutely beautiful and quiet, the pool clean and heated every day. We had a fabulous time, thank you:-)
Just as good as the first time
This was our second visit to Chris and Susie's lovely Gites and again we could not fault anything. We stayed in the same Gite which since our last visit has been renovated inside making better use of the space downstairs. The grounds and swimming pool were just as we remembered them and we took full advantage of the pool as the weather was very kind to us for our week's stay. Chris and Susie have thought of everything and are very hospitable without being intrusive. This area of France is beautiful with lovely forest walks, beautiful towns and villages to visit and lakes with great facilities all nearby. Again, we would definitely recommend this Gite if you are looking for a quiet holiday home with plenty of outdoor activities close to hand. We will be back.
Fantastic Gite - Wonderfully Equiped + great hosts
This gite is really equiped to a wonderful standard, with such niceties as fans in every bedroom. Hairdryers in every bedroom. A great, clean pool area, bakery items delivered to the property each morning and a very wide selection of toys, games and activities to keep the whole family amused. Chris and Suzie were wonderful considerate hosts, and we can definitely say that this is the best gite we have stayed in in France.
We had a fantastic three night stay in gite number one. Chris and Susie couldn't have been better hosts.
The property itself was beautiful and immaculate, and the grounds relaxing and peaceful. Our three year old especially loved the large trampoline!
In fact we enjoyed it so much we're considering returning next summer.
Wundervolle Tage in "Les Marronniers"
A rustic idyll in Crozant
This entire area was a bit of a revelation to us, with its rolling hills and quaint woodland; we're much more used to flat open coastal areas of France. But this was a perfect spot to get away from things, tucked away in a quiet hamlet yet within a very easy strike of essential services (Super U, Boulanger’s, markets and banks). The beautiful countryside was easy to explore on foot, by bike and on our Kayak. The lake at Crozant provided a beach and swimming, on top of a Kayak spot. With Chris's help we found a sensible bike route - some directions from the Gite are very hilly!
And back at base, the quirky original features of the Gite are delightful and the cooling stone walls kept us comfortable on the hottest days. With the gorgeous pool to plunge in, table tennis and a trampoline, everyone was entertained without a struggle. Susie and Chris are great hosts and a mine of information, making great suggestions when we needed help to find stuff to do. Everything you could need is provided for self catering, picnics and barbeques, all leading to an easy, relaxing and very enjoyable break.
We are just two hours from the chateaux of the Loire valley, in the beautiful rural Creuse département (23) of the Limousin region, close to the borders of Indre (36) and Haute-Vienne (87). All three départements contain a wealth of attractions for every taste, from the simple pleasures of quiet country life to the lively nightlife and student scene in the regional capital, Limoges.
Within a very short distance, you will find breathtaking scenery along the banks of the River Creuse; cultural sites with strong local connections to George Sand, Chopin, Monet, Guillaumin and the other impressionists; historical towns, chateaus, ancient churches, and fortifications dating back to the days of the crusaders and even earlier; tennis, water-sports, fishing, horse-riding, nature walks, and farm visits; lake-side restaurants and bars, outdoor cafes, gourmet auberges, a state-of-the-art discotheque (4 miles from us - well out of earshot!) and even a “cottage pub”.
The Tour de France is returning to Limoges in 2016, stages on the 5th and 6th July.
Other Activities: Bird-watching, sailing, microlighting, flying
Additional charge for heating November to February inclusive, €40 per week per gite. Rates include for bed linen but not for towels. Guests are responsible for any damage they cause to our facilities, and we advise you to insure against possible liability for any major cost. Having said that, we quite understand that minor accidents happen, and rather than hold a security deposit, we prefer to operate a gentlemen's agreement - we will only ask you to pay what it costs us. HomeAway Holiday Rentals and Owners Direct have started charging guests a booking fee with effect from 31st May 2016. We do not agree with this idea, which appears to be a hidden extra. If you wish to avoid this levy, please make a new enquiry direct with us at our own website www.theforgottenfrance.com
