About DeLoyd John Huenink
Susan and I are retired. We both grew up in Green Bay, WI...GO PACK! We both had professional careers...Susan as an owner of a restaurant in Saugatuck Michigan, John as an owner and founder of an advertising agency in Milwaukee, then as a founder of one of the first video animation companies in the Midwest, then as an entrepreneur in the Internet development area. At the age of 60, John entered the ministry. 5 years later Susan and John's paths crossed (john's wife of 42 years had passed away and Susan had been divorced for 30 plus years) and they fell in love and were married. We are a bit older than most of the property owners around Costa Rica, but when we visited a few years ago, we fell in love with the property, the area and the people. We decided we had time in our lives for yet another big adventure. And here we are
DeLoyd John Huenink purchased this House in 2015
Why DeLoyd John Huenink chose La Fortuna
When we bought this lot 3 years ago, I described the view as “The most beautiful view I had ever seen.” The Arenal Volcano dominated the landscape. And in the same view, there was Arenal Lake, the largest inland lake in Costa Rica. Running alongside of our property, just out of sight, but not out of sound, is a river, singing it's song 24/7. We bought the property the day we saw it.
What makes this House unique
We built a beautiful contemporary home, with what you would expect in an American built home...On demand hot water in every room, American plumbing where you can actually flush the toilet paper, screens on the windows and fans on the ceilings. The bedroom is air conditioned, although in the 1.5 years we have been here we have never needed it. Fresh air is welcomed into the house so inside or out you can take advantage of the amazing Costa Rica weather.

Stay here for the views!
The home at white hawk was as described. The road is tough to get up to the house however completely worth the breathtaking views! We loved the fresh breakfast every morning in our own home. The private waterfall was amazing after a short scenic hike and the Phoenix restaurant is a must for dinner.
Beautiful views, comfortable living!
We stayed for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the experience! It was everything we were looking for during our stay in costa rica!
It met all my expectations & then some
Favorite house we stayed at in Costa Rica
We just got back from our Costa Rica trip where we stayed in 4 different locations. This was our favorite house by far. The views were awesome and it was awesome to come back from a day of touring and just relax on the back patio. The breakfasts were awesome as well. Kelly was great with the check in and very helpful as well. We highly recommend his restaurant as well.
Can't beat it!
I dont have the words to describe or tell anything that hasn't already been said about this place. My wife and I had an absolutely fantastic time at Johns place. The property itself doesn't tell the whole tale. John is such a wonderful host. He made sure we had everything we needed and more. I loved the conversations we had about the history of the area and his place along with life in CR. I can't imagine anyone not being in awe of the beauty surrounding this place. The pictures dont do it the justice necessary. Will never forget our time here.
So far...As of November 2016, 7 reviews on VRBO and Home Away...all 5 stars. Every review we have received has been 5 star. Thank you previous guests...Air BnB has 49 reviews on our home and all but one is 5 star...that one was a 4.
In Costa Rica it is traditional to name your home. We thought about it a lot, and over our first few months building here noticed a pair of beautiful huge birds that flew thru the valley along side of the house almost every morning. They appeared to live deep in the mountain valley on the right side of the house as you look at the Volcano. As they fly, they let out a piercing cry that is unmistakable. We realized we were building our home near their “home” . It seemed appropriate to name our home “The Home of the White Hawks” We even had our exterior door carved with one of my photographs of this magnificent bird. SO….
Welcome to your home away from home…

Please remember, we are only set up for 2 guests. You will have lots of room to do as you wish. You have neighbors...two B&B's each about 2 blocks away. There are no shades on any of the windows, so we tend to go to bed early and rise early. The views are just too magnificent to cover with cloth. And no one is near you to see in anyway. Please consider a 4WD vehicle. the 14KM road from the paved road leading to the Arenal National Park entrance is gravel and often rutted and if raining, it will be muddy. On this road you will pass the park entrance and drive about 8KM almost to El Castillo. then a 1.2KM drive to our house. That road is up hill and also often challenging, especially in wet weather. Can it be done with a small sedan...probably...but you will be a lot happier with a 4WD vehicle.
One more thing...if you drive from San Jose airport, plan on 3.5 to 4.5 hours minimum to arrive at our house. YOU DO NOT WANT TO DRIVE AT NIGHT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN TO COSTA RICA BEFORE. So plan to arrive at the airport by Noon. We know, looking at a map, that you believe you can get here a lot quicker...trust us. We have made the trip many times and it takes 4.5 hours to get here. Let us know your flight plans as soon as you can.
Our GPS location is:
You will be able to do most anything this part of Costa Rica is famous for, within a 30 to 40 minute drive. Zip Line...the best anywhere. Hanging Bridges...Amazing. Butterfly Conservancy...one of the only ones in the world that actually raises all of its butterflies. Hot Springs...perhaps the best in Costa Rica, and all withing easy driving distance from here. Art Galleries....one right here others in La Fortuna. Hiking trails....close by, from very difficult to easy. Your choice. Good Food...it's here. Kayaking on a lake...right here. climb to a lake filled volcano...right here. Tube a white water river...Right here. Remember, you can walk to our private waterfall right from the house and be one of a very limited number of people in the world who have visited that particular one. the rivers that split into a "V" here are the rivers you hear from the house. And from the terrace you will see the Turkey Vultures and hawks fly so close you can see the reflections off their eyes, the Toucans often sit in a tree right off the patio. Between 9 and 10 most mornings, the White Hawks screech and fly from their home high in the rainforest and often sit and hunt nearby. Spider Monkeys and Howler Monkeys are heard most days and often seen in the trees that fringe the terrace Jungle and the Jungle behind the house. There is so much to do you could spend a week and only dent the surface.
We are in an area where only a few speak English, but somehow everyone gets by. We will direct you to great Lunch and dinner places, you will eat breakfast at the house, cooked for you in your kitchen (and best eaten outside on the terrace, in our opinion). In El Castillo about 7 minutes away, you will find a small grocery store, several restaurants, a church, a snake zoo and a butterfly conservancy, an art gallery and views as you drive up the mountain you can only imagine.
And remember to drive along this side of Lake Arenal at Sunset....beautiful places to watch it from
