About Carlyn Hodges
Though I was raised in NYC, I have been living in mountain towns of Colorado for over 35 years. I consider myself a global citizen and traveling is where my heart lies. My dog Athena has probably traveled more than most dogs, having been with me up both coasts of the U.S. and lived in Hawaii for over 7 years. I love the outdoors and have been an avid mountain biker, hiker, ocean swimmer and stand up paddler. When I travel I love to meet people from other cultures and have been a host with couch surfing which has allowed me to meet so many wonderful folks.
Carlyn Hodges purchased this House in 1999
Why Carlyn Hodges chose Durango
I came to this area from Crested Butte as I need to come down from the extreme climate and rigors of living at 9,000 feet. I immediately fell in love with this valley and this house . It's charm, history and warmth grabbed my heart at once. I met the woman up the street whose father built the house as a root cellar way back when he was a young man. Edna has since passed away many years ago at a ripe old age, but I love the history that lives on here. I have kept the original door in the back where old lady Edna, as I called her, once slept as a child. Now updated with all the modern conveniences, the house retains it's charm. I love his area and it's easy access to the mountains, desert, town and canyon country. Hermosa has an abundance of fruit orchards, and you can watch the narrow gauge railroad cruise by on it's scenic journey. This area truly is, hermosa!
What makes this House unique

The property was perfect for our needs. The dogs loved playing in the snow.
The house was in good condition. There were many amenities and we appreciated the opportunity to use them when necessary.
There was a bit of trouble with the heater - which after we called, a repair man came to work on it right away. .We really do appreciate all the hospitality and will stay again. Thank you to Carlyn and Nick and to Deborah for offering her sweet home for us to use while in Durango for our 21st wedding anniversary.
Nicely furnished comfortable abode close to everything
Very comfortable all amenities we needed were provided master bed was lovely to sleep in. We didn't bring our dog this time but looked like she would love the yard and area. Thanks for having us.
Wonderful Christmas in Durango
Property was as advertised. Clean, comfortable and homey. Loved having the yard so we could bring our Golden with us for our stay. A Christmas to remember!
Perfect for us!
Casita Bonita is adorable, clean, comfortable and had everything we needed and plenty of space for our stay in Durango. The completely fenced in yard was great for us too since we travel with our dog. It is in a peaceful location north of town so it's close enough for easy access to activities but also quiet and out-of-the-way. Carlyn lives nearby and welcomed us when we arrived but let us be after that, which I appreciated. I'm sure she would be more than happy to recommend things to do or places to see but we knew our way around and were happy to just come and go. Staying here was an easy transaction from start to finish and a pleasant experience all the way around. We love Durango and hope to stay at Casita Bonita again in the future!
Relaxing and restful
Clean, quiet and comfortable! Host was accommodating and flexible! Would definitely stay again :)
Wonderful home for a weekend with our family
We stayed here with our 4 kids (15, 10, 8, 5) and our Australian Shepherd for 3 nights.
The owner was very accommodating and we were able to have a late arrival on a Thursday night.
This was my first VRBO rental so I wasn't sure what to expect. The home was comfortable for us all. Because it is an older home I didn't know what the furnace situation would be but it worked well and kept us cozy. They are pet friendly and have some specific requests for taking care of the property and your dogs - nothing a responsible pet owner does not already do. They provided old bath towels for wiping muddy paws which was quite nice. The yard was unique in that it completely surrounds the house with one solid fence all the way around the property. My kids and dog ran in circles around the house playing hide and seek which kept them totally entertained.
The kitchen is well stocked for cooking a basic meal. There is a coffee pot and even coffee in the refrigerator although we didn't use them. There is a dishwasher (which we didn't use as I only made some quick breakfasts and brought disposable plates for us) and a washer and dryer. I used the washer and dryer one time and it seemed to work just fine.
I was concerned about there only being one bathroom but it really wasn't an issue for us at all. It was very clean and completely up to date and a nice size as well.
The neighborhood is nice and quiet. The directions for the home from the owner seemed a little odd when I got them but then made perfect sense as we drove to the home and got parked.
If the High School Mountain Bike State Finals are held in Durango again next year we will definitely be trying to book this home again.
