About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 bathroom. 2 Levels, full kitchen. Sleeps 5

Restored semi-perched Cotes-du-Rhone wine village house. Two floors with secure bike storage in basement.

Large authentic restored tiled kitchen with balcony beside reading-TV area. Two 2nd floor bedrooms , one with double bed, the other with 3 single beds.

Simple, very sunny and authentic. Clean, cheerful, sunny and sweet. Easy to maintain. Located on outer edge of an exceptionally pretty village. Great base for hiking, biking, paragliding, wine tasting and outdoor activity. Region abounds with cultural and festival possibilities in nearby Avignon, Orange, Dieulefit, Vaison-la-Romaine and Nyons.

Venterol Described:: This protected Cotes-du-Rhone hillside wine village is in the Drome, on the edge Vaucluse. The modest mountains behind Venterol form a sort of climatic divide between the greener northern Drome and the warm, sunny Midi climate of Vaucluse.

Our village has its own excellent croissant/baguette bakery (with tiny cafe area beside), a shady, terraced cafe and restaurant (housed in the former elementary school) on the main square. Dining beneath the platin trees is a lovely experience. The smaller Place Sabarot below holds the Cafe-de-la-Poste Restaurant, a small, truly gourmet restaurant.

One of Provence's finest wrought iron bell towers (campanili) rings the hours atop our church.... just as it has done since long past centuries when workers streamed in from the fields to tip a glass of pastis before heading home. There were 6 cafes then!

In summer, on Saturday morning, a small market sometimes opens near the church. The goat cheese dealer, a mountain man out of a village behind Venterol, comes down to sell his cheeses in the little square opposite the Municipal Art Gallery (Le Temple). There's a mobile pizza dealer in the same spot in the evening.

Farmers from the village and surrounding hamlets sell their produce, olive oil, goat cheese, jams & jellies, and wine and local products at our village Bakery. You can also find fresh pressed apricot juice and, in a pinch, milk.

All products (as well as Guillaume's pastries) are made in Venterol.

Our baker (an award winning "Campagnon de France") bakes the best croissants you will ever walk through a French village each morning to buy!

Our House:

On the entry floor is a spacious kitchen with a sitting area to relax and read. A "breakfast balcony" looks out on a portion of the vineyard valley between Nyons and Valreas.

The bath has a small sink, shower and toilet. It, like the kitchen floor, is newly tiled and lovely.

A winding stair leads up to two bedrooms above. One is large with three single beds. The other is small and has a double bed. Both have large armoirs, chairs, one a radio, and both have hardwood floors and beam ceilings. Walls are white and the large bedroom is very bright.

In fact, the whole house is bright, clean, and easy to maintain. Furnishings are tastefully modest and authentic.

To the south, Vaison-la-Romaine, Orange and Avignon are only twenty minutes to an hour and a quarter away.

North of Venterol, one finds the greener, cooler climate of the High Drome (plenty of hiking, swimming, and outdoor activity.... including biking, paragliding, and horseback riding,

Venterol has its own Municipal Art Gallery (Le Temple) opposite the large

lavoire beside the Mairie (Town Hall). Artists, both visiting and from our

village, exhibit their paintings, sculpture, ceramics and photographs. The

village has designed a renovation which is light bright, with a circular balcony for 2nd floor exhibition space. Our 2nd Art Gallery is beside the

church: Ombre et Lumiere holds frequent painting exhibitions of quality.

We are surrounded by many cultural and educational possibilities. Whether it is the astounding Museum of Silk Manufacture in Taulignan, Olive Oil Museums in Nyons, or the surprising Printing/Cardboard Box Manufacturing in Valreas..... or the Palais-des-Papes in Avignon (day trip), the cultural possibilities are nearly limitless. Every village has a specialty.

There are countless events, places and architectural gems to answer any one's appetite for discovery. Also Concerts galore...outdoor and in breathtakingly beautiful medieval cathedrals. There is a municipal playground behind the Mairie for the kids (easy walking distance away).

We are long-time owners of this and another property in this exceptional village. We are happy to recommend unusual places to see and explore, sites you will not find in guidebooks, places we have come to know intimately after years of living in Venterol. If we are in town, we offer a welcoming first French breakfast to anyone renting for two weeks or more.

About George & Mary Haling

I had been living next door since 1970 and, when this house came up for sale in 1998, decided to restore and refurbish it.

I have been a professional travel photographer most of my life, so the idea was to transform this light/bright house into an affordable vacation base for all who treasure the Provence and who are oriented toward the outdoors.

It is a gem of a house, a nice base from which to explore, make day trips, or just hibernate for a really restful stay in a lovely village.

George & Mary Haling purchased this house in 1998

Why George & Mary Haling chose Drome Provencale

It is a gem of a house, a nice base from which to explore, make day trips, or just hibernate for a really restful stay in this lovely village.

The front door is steps away from the village square and the balcony gives onto a partial view of the valley of vineyards & lavender running between Nyons and Valreas. I guess it looked like a great place for breakfasts on a balcony!

What makes this house unique

An affordable renovated vacation house at a modest price.

Especially suited to outdoor oriented couples and families.

Perfect for bicyclers, hikers, and those who only want to watch TV on a

rare rainy evening. Sunny and cheerful. Perfectly private and pet friendly.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Kurt, Senne, Rune and I want to thank you for this wonderful stay!

We have seen a lot of VERY wonderful things.

Our stay was a view of the village, the environment, the people and all of its glory. Yes, it is a magnificent place.

Our stay was too short to see everything that this place has to offer.

The house you renovated is a nice place to come home to.

Thank you for our stay and the very warm welcome.

I, we, hope that if you ever come to Belgium, you will contact us. You and Mary are very welcome in our home.

The children say, "we had a very nice home in your house.

We are sorry we have to leave.

We find you very funny and we slept well.

And we will come back. Thank You!!

Relaxing, charming, and gateway to Provence

  • 4 of 5

My first visit to Provence done the right way, staying in an authentic ancient French village home and launching adventures from there. It is the authentic experience in a charming home with a balcony and great view of the vineyards and rolling hills. George, the owner, knows everything about the region though from the U.S. I didn't ask one question that stumped him. Walk up to the plaza, grab a lunch and local wine, and tour the village church. Then head out and see some of the amazing sites in the region from olive trees to ancient Greek and Roman ruins. Much better than hanging out at a chain hotel and not experiencing the feel of the region.

Charme et hospitalité

  • 5 of 5

Nostalgie in De Drome

  • 4 of 5

Vive Venterol!

  • 5 of 5

Lieber George,

Venterol is an exceptional semi-perched wine village in the Cotes-du-Rhone region of Provence between Nyons and Valreas in the Drome. Olive orchards bank the surrounding hills and brilliant fields of lavender and vineyards color the valley below. The village lies on the southern side of modest mountains bisected by fossil streams and hiking trails. Wild boar are occasionally seen on the narrow mountain roads once used by the French Resistance.

Venterol, as with so many neighboring villages in the High Drome, is surrounded by vineyards and wine tasting 'caveaux'. While one finds municipal pools in most regional villages, our nearby Nyons provides an expansive, state-of-the-art, Swim Center/Aquatic Park, ideal for family fun and recreation. Close by streams and waterfalls provide additional picnic/swim opportunities. Mt Ventoux can be seen in the distance and many visiting bikers have made the trip to its summit from our house. Usually the Tour-de-France passes either down on the departmental road or a nearby route.

Venterol has two Art Galleries: Ombre et Lumiere and the village's own (a former chapel, re-designed with many windows, a surround balcony and hardwood floors.

In this lovely place, George Haling (along with many painters, sculptors, ceramic artists and photographers) has exhibited

his Found Paintings.

The owner has also shown his b/w Photo-Reportages with subjects rincluding Paris in the 1960's to Nez Perce Native Americans, French Factory Workers, Small Occupations of New York, and Venterol's Agriculture Today.

Other Activities: Cotes-du-Rhone Wine Tasting at numerous local 'caveaux' (both wine co-opertives and small tasting

counters at local farm vineyards), Market Days (Nyons: 10 min. and St.Cecil are our favorites, fossil hunting (stream behind Venterol).

Cultural festivals (summer concerts, opera, chorales and theater) in Vaison-la-Romaine, Avignon, Arles and Aix...as well as in nearly every Drome/Ardeche village.

We especially recommend.... Flying kites off the mountain road behind St. May. Higher still on the same road, sit on "the edge of the world" (cliffs high above Remusat). See huge "vautures" soar out of caves below (a protected sanct-uary). Back beneath St.May, bathe in a pristine shallow river.
