About Mr Colin Smith
I am a retired teacher, teaching for 38 years in Special Education. I retired 10 years ago and followed my dreams of purchasing a property in the beautiful Lake District. My wife also was in the teaching profession and was head for most of her career. In her final 6 years she was chief executive of 3 schools all on the same site, a comprehensive, primary and special school. She was honoured in the Queens birthday honours in 2001 and was made a Dame. My hobbies are mainly sport now, playing golf, skiing, cycling a couple of times a week and I enjoy walking in the fells.
Mr Colin Smith purchased this Cottage in 2008

Colin attended the property the day before we arrived to ensure that everything was perfect and to check that when we arrived the house was cosy and warm as the weather had been very cold. This was really appreciated and not every owner is so thoughtful.
Thank you for your kind comments and we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay.

Family week in Lake District with our dog
Had a great holiday exploring the lakes . Good central location with easy access. Pub down the road served great Sunday lunch. Lovely log burner was perfect for evening relaxing after fab bath in rolltop one. Excellently well equipped kitchen with so many appliances. Aga was great though would have been nice to have been lit for our arrival . Main downstairs bedroom was quite cold but the douvet was fabulous so slept really well and there were plenty of blankets and hot water bottles if needed . Could have been cleaner and kindling would have helped the fire to get going but over all a great little place to stay and enjoy the fabulous countryside. The home made jam supplied was delicious and having tea and coffee available was welcome. The manger was excellent and prompt in communication. Thank you for a great home for our family holiday - our dog really loved it too.
Lovely house in a perfect location
We had a fantastic weekend in this house. We stayed as two couples and there was plenty of room for everyone. Well equipped kitchen was great for cooking in. We made great use of the outside space in the good weather we had. Well maintained garden and patio furniture allowed for some relaxation outside. Close to lots of local attractions but in a quiet village so was very peaceful. Would absolutely recommend staying here. Communication with Colin was excellent.
Hi Andrew and thank you for your brilliant review. We are delighted you had a great time and hope you book again in the near future.

Great location to see northern lakes
Great location to see the northern lakes and surroundings. Made ourselves at home after a day and settled into our holiday with our dog.
Little difficulty finding the house as arrived late in evening so maybe a few more instructions may be helpful as Satnav took us to a different area in village. Will definitely come back to Lake District again.
Great location, great cottage
Thanks Michael for the 5 star review. We hope you book again in the future.

Stainton is ideally placed to enjoy the Northern Lake District and Eden Valley. It is only 10 minutes from the market town of Penrith with a wealth of shops, pubs, restaurants and famous open air Saturday market.
The area is ideal for walking, Helvellyn and Blencathra are only a short ride away. The tranquil lanes are ideal for cycling and Stainton is on the Coast to Coast route.
Stainton itself has a village inn and hotel only yards away with superb food, post office, small shop, farm shop and the Rheged Discovery Centre is minutes away.
Rheged has a multi plex cinema and sells local goods in its shopping complex.
Within yards of the house is the Alpaca centre. The market town of Keswick is 14 miles with its numerous climbing and walking shops as well as a range of restaurants and cafes.
Lake Ullswater, often described as the most romantic lake , is only three and a half miles from the house.
