Lovely cozy house
The location of this cottage provides restful nights for a parent visiting her UC Berkeley student who lives in a noisy campus environment. Historic charm with IKEA comfort. The Mexican bakery around the corner on San Pedro is a unique experience. Andreas is helpful.
The house was close to train and restaurant. It was clean and comfortable.
Close to Cal
Thank you! Close to UC Berkeley which is what we needed. Clean, charming, quiet neighborhood. We’ll be back!
Good location, reasonable rate; would not stay again
Our family is relatively new to VRBO. We have used Vacasa, and have stayed at VRBO rentals 4 times with other families as the lead renter. The location of this home is great and the price is fine. That being said, we would not stay here again and these are the reasons why:
- four dishes or pans that I pulled from the cupboards had dried food on them. Yuck!
- the sheets on one of the twin beds had stains on them. Gross!
-The ceiling in the bathroom has brown grease spots from condensation, which are easily cleaned if someone was paying attention to detail. Really gross to look at when one is showering to get clean!
-the window locks are super sketchy and old; two barely work. While the neighborhood is technically safe (it is Berkeley; we lived there for 3 years), it really disconcerting when you open the blinds and can lift the windows straight up. They were not even latched when we arrived. Very sloppy!
- when the heater turns off it makes a pinging noise for almost 15 minutes. Not a problem if one is leaving for the day but if trying to fall asleep, really a annoying!
-Also, the description states that there is parking in the ‘shared driveway”. THis however is untrue. The neighbor very kindly let me know that they bought the house next door so the driveway is technically theirs. One must park on the street, which is fine, but she did share that she has asked the owner to change that in the description several times. Again, attention to detail.
Linda, I find your review quite offensive. How unfortunate!
Any dirty dishes are cleaned every time a guest leaves.
While it is possible that not all dishes in the cabinets are being checked one by one every time, I went through all of it with my cleaner after your comments and found no dishes with food on them.
Laundry as well is being done EVERY time a guest leaves. There has never been any used or dirty laundry at the arrival of a new guest. One of our sheets that we sometimes have on the twin bed has some discoloration to it. I never thought this was offensive (as long as it is clean) and so we have kept it and not thrown it out.
As for the bathroom - yes, this has been an ongoing issue. If you would have looked more closely before lashing out you may have noticed that this is being cleaned all the time. The issue here is that the (solvent free/ water based) paint is "bleeding" these discolorations (I have the same issue in my personal bathroom). We can only keep cleaning for now. However, these are not "grease spots" that stem from our house being dirty.
Regarding your parking and driveway comment: whereas we used to offer "shared driveway parking", this has not been the case anymore since over a year and the note had been removed from VRBO a long time ago. I cannot see anything about shared driveway parking on the website or on the app. I am not sure what you are referring to. (I will contact VRBO about this.) In addition it appears to me that you did not read our detailed check-in information. It clearly states that there is no shared parking in the driveway.
There is easy street parking however and usually directly in front of the house. So this has never been an issue.
Lastly, as you noticed, we offer (comparatively) reasonable rates. One of the reasons is that the home is not remodeled. Yes windows are old and some of then are in less than perfect condition. However, they still function and the neighborhood is safe. The house has never been broken into since we owned it.
Nice and clean but cheaply furnished
very clean home near 4th st shops and restaurant close to freeway access to San Francisco and in one direction and wine country in the other direction. The home, like all in this nice area of Berkley, is small yet adequately sized except for the bathroom which is exceedingly small. The reason for the loss of two stars is because of the disregard shown for the furnishing of the home. Nothing matched, the tv in the living room instead of being mounted on wall above the fireplace, instead sits on an end table from the master bedroom, cables exposed. There is a cheap desk in what once was the dining room along with a lounger of some sort. It seems as if it was furnished with items from a garage sale. The other major complaint is also indicative of the little regard for the guests and that is the bathroom tissue which could not be of a cheaper variety, so thin it was completely translucent. I don't expect luxury in this price range but is Charmin too much to ask?
Jesse, I am sorry you did not like our furnishings, however, I can assure you that besides furniture I inherited (bed) there are no simple, cheap pieces in the house. It is all hand-selected and purchased... Crate & Barrel, EQ3, etc.. But yes, it is eclectic.
The TV is swivel mounted to the wall next to the fireplace as it is much better to watch there (eye-level) than high up above the fireplace.
Lastly, I would like to point out that our pictures on VRBO show quite exactly what the actual situation/ furnishing is.
It was fine for our needs
It was clean and comfortable.
